Financial Sites
Chinese Aid
The Chinese Ambassador recently opened three double classrooms as well as uniforms, computers and printers at Wandi Primary School in the Chimbu Province. The ambassador promised more development and services for the people of PNG.
Philip Taku
Mr Taku, who was suspended from the National Capital District Commission in August of 1999 has made an application for his reinstatement with the Supreme Court.
Brisbane and Sydney
Qantas has matched the Air Niugini special airfares of K599 return to Brisbane and K699 return to Sydney excluding taxes.
Air Niugini
The proposed partner for Air Niugini was due to be announced but it appears that no one wants to buy the airline. Any existing offers will now be forwarded to the National Executive for consideration. In the meantime the rumour machine is in full swing suggesting Singapore Airlines to a local PNG airline will be the new owners. Another rumour is that Qantas, who was at the forefront of the originals rumours for a share, has now pulled out due to financial difficulties.
Goroka Airport
Equipment valued at more than K100,000 has been stolen from the Department of Civil Aviation at the Goroka Airport. Some of the equipment is reported to be computers, fire truck alarms, breathing apparatus, and protective clothing. Due to the lack of this protective equipment DCA safety officers have refused to attend to any emergencies dealing with aircraft or buildings.
Sewing Machines
The Victorian League for Commonwealth Friendship has donated two treadle sewing machines, two irons, an ironing board and other sewing accessories to the Maino Heduru Vocational Centre in the National Capital. The league has also recently purchased a fax machine and paper for the National Capital District Red Cross branch.
Lihir
Three lady divers have been investigating the effects sedimentation has had on the reefs in the area. So far the divers have seen no severe signs of sedimentation or muddy areas. Two of the divers hope to obtain their doctorates from the project.
Boroko Foodworld
It is hard to imagine that more than a year has passed since the Foodworld supermarket moved from the cramped premises in Boroko to Gordons but it has. I am unsure of what has happened about the court case. Does any reader know anything?
POSF
The Public Officers Superannuation Fund is installing information kiosks so that members can access their details such as account balances and check status of claims. Contributors can also check details at http://www.posf.com.pg
NPF
The Government has agreed to pay the financially troubled National Provident Fund 14.67 percent on an amount of K61.5 million loaned to the government for the construction of the Poreporena highway from the Airport to Town over the top of Burns Peak. The government had suggest an amount of 11 percent net of tax.
It is expected that the NPF will be free of debt by May. The debt has been reduced from K150 million less than two years ago to an amount under K5 million today.
Doctors
It has been quoted by the president of the PNG Medical Society, Doctor Mathias Sapuri, that the current ratio of doctors to Patients is one doctor to 15,000 people and one doctor for every 80,000 people in the rural areas. This compares with one doctor for every 500 people in towns and one doctor for every 5000 people in rural areas of Australia.
The shortage of doctors has meant that many hospitals have had to send patients to the Port Moresby General Hospital simply because there are not enough doctors to go around. This has placed enormous strain on the Port Moresby Hospital (PMGH).
Close by to the PMGH stands a private hospital, funded by the Motor Vehicles Insurance Limited, completed many months ago but still unopened. I wonder how they are going to recruit doctors for that if it ever opens?
Kagua Erave
A ground breaking ceremony has been held for the start of a new hospital at Sumbura village in the Kagua-Erave district of the Southern Highlands Province.
Rio Tinto / Bougainville
Attorney Steve Berman of the Seattle law firm Hagen-Berman in Seattle USA has been instructed by Francis Ona the Bougainvillean secessionist leader to initiate a class action law suit against Rio Tinto for genocide and environmental damage to the island.
Indonesia
Indonesian police have arrested three PNG Nationals for allegedly trafficking in drugs.
Electoral Common Roll
Despite funding by AusAid the updating of PNG's common roll for the next elections seems to have ground to a halt. An intending candidate, for one of the Madang seats, has raised complaints.
Tertiary Education
The National Government has approved a plan that will help offset the high costs of tertiary education by using a greater use of the electronic media.
University of Technology
Over 500 students have graduated from the University of Technology in Lae. 40 of these students were awarded certificates of merit. The University is still suffering from a lack of funds to rebuild the mathematics and computer science building that burnt down last year.
Pothole City
With an injection of K2.6 million from the Lae City Authority and the continuing tropical downpours in Port Moresby it would seem that Lae is about to lose the title of Pot Hole City to the National Capital if it has not already done so.
Elcom
The deputy General manager of Elcom, Joseph Bariamu, has been appointed on an acting basis to take over from Sev Maso who has been seconded to the Elcom privatisation project.
East New Britain Province
The Deputy governor of East New Britain has been confirmed as Ephraim Jubilee. The vote for the deputy position was tied three times until the Governor used his casting vote.
Kokopo
The East New Britain branch of the Pangu Pati has indicated that they will re-nominate Sir Rabbie Namaliu for the Kokopo seat despite his announcement that he wants to retire from politics.
Oro Province
The governor of Oro province has survived a vote of no confidence by ten votes to six.
Central Province, Kalo
The Kalo community school in central province has been refurbished thanks to a gift of K20,000 from AusAid.
Central Province, Kwikila
Heavy rain has washed away the foundations of a bridge at Kwikila in Central province. Thousands of villages, who rely on the sale of vegetables in the markets around Port Moresby, now have to hand carry them across to waiting vehicles on the other side. It is no known how long the bridge will be able to be used for pedestrian traffic.
Chimbu Province
A bridge built in the 1960's has also been washed away in the Salt-Nomane region of Chimbu province. It is estimated that farmers, traders and other people will now have to walk about 60 kilometres to be able to catch public transport.
Milne Bay Province
A ground breaking ceremony has been held for the construction of a new K2 million police station in the heart of the provincial capital, Alotau. It is expected that the work will take six months to complete.
Shell PNG
Shell PNG has been taken over by InterOil Ltd for a reported price of K60 million. InterOil are the operators of PNG's first oil refinery. Shell will take on a nine percent share of InterOil.
It has been reported in the daily press that InterOil has reported a loss, after tax, of $US439,000 last year.
Women in Sport
An organisation called Women in Sport has been formed with the aim of developing and promoting the participation of women in sport. Several well-known names are on the committee. Names such as Veitu Diro and Iamo Launa.
Copra Marketing Board
The new acting chief of the Copra Marketing Board is on a salary of K300,000. This has been reported as being K100,000 more than the previous chief executive.
Papua Hotel
The site of the Pap Hotel that burned down many years ago and was acquired by the Investment Corporation fund of PNG is to be sold by tender. The Investment Corp is losing about in K100,000 per annum in lost rentals by having the vacant land.
Misima Gold Mine
It is estimated that the Misima Gold Mine only has a life of three more years. The little island has been dependent on the mine since 1989 and it is hoped that with various projects the villagers will be able to cope with the mine closure. The mine is promoting cash crops such as coconut, cocoa and a variety of crops such as legumes and spices in an effort to help prepare the villagers.
