World Record
I jokingly mentioned the PX girl's World Airline Hockey Championship last week and now a PNG junior cricketer has set a world record for the fastest half century in the junior World Cup qualifying rounds in Fiji. Seventeen-year-old Mahuru Dai from Hanuabada scored 54 runs of just 15 deliveries. The excellent batting record has assured the PNG side a place in the finals.
Economy
The Prime Minister has said that PNG citizens will go through many painful moments while the country's shattered economy is repaired.
Forestry Licences
The PM has said that the PNG forests had been exploited and there is now a need to review the situation. He said that the Government would not issue any more forestry licences until the study is completed.
Women in Politics
The Women in Politics meeting rescheduled for between the 13th and 17th of August has been put off yet again.
Women's Political Party
A political party for women only may very well be illegal as it would be breaking parts of the Organic Law that deal with discrimination on sex, religion or on the basis of region.
Sportsman of the Year
Adrian Lam, the captain of the PNG Rugby League team, has been named as the SP Sportsman of the Year.
Naluge Guy, the PNG squash player rated in the top 75 in the world was voted Sportswoman of the year.
The PNG Kumuls (Rugby League Team) won the sports team of the year.
Don Bosco Tech
The Don Bosco Technical College in the National Capital has recently celebrated its 16th anniversary.
The school had trade skills exhibits to show the visitors the various trades that are taught at the institution.
Honorary Doctorate
The Prime Minster has been awarded an honorary doctorate in economics by members of the University Council.
Hagen Show
The 22nd Mount Hagen Cultural Show was a successful event with what has been reported as being a record turn out. In fact it has been said that the show was the biggest in the 40-year history of the show.
Eighty-three dancing groups attended the show whereas in other years it has only attracted 40 groups.
AIDS Council
AusAid has donated 20 new vehicles to the National AIDS Council Secretariat. The vehicles will be used, by the Council, in the various provinces around PNG.
Pikinini Fashion
Children between 18 months and 18 years have been raising money to help the Bougainville Children's Fund.
The children took part in a sleepwear, casual, fantasy, ethnic, reggae and evening wear fashion show.
Caterets and Mortlock Islands
Both Islands suffering from the rising oceans and now the National Disaster and Emergency Service are claiming that a submission over two weeks ago to the government for help has fallen on deaf ears.
Witchcraft
Three women have been killed, allegedly for practicing witchcraft, in two separate incidents in Morobe and Chimbu provinces in the past week.
Anti-corruption
Various chapters of Transparency International in the Pacific are developing educational material about corruption for distribution to schools.
Privatisation
The Privatisation Commission has again been blasted for not informing the grass roots public of the reasons behind the exercise.
Depression
The Manufacturers Council says that the economy of PNG is extremely weak and no longer in recession rather it is at the gates of depression.
Public Land
Yet another piece of public reserve land in Port Moresby appears to have been "illegally" subdivided and distributed to new titleholders for various development purposes without the proper procedures being followed.
The National Capital District Commission (NCD) was issued the title and appointed a trustee in 1987 over the land known as Unagi Park. The NCDC was surprised to learn that the Lands Department had gone ahead and subdivided the land for distribution even though the NCDC's "trusteeship" over the reserve land was still current.
Madang Tech
Students from Madang Technical College have been hospitalised after eating a suspect meal of fish at a school lunch.
Members of Parliament
Once again the Parliament has been delayed because members have not honoured their constitutional and parliamentary responsibilities by being present at various sittings of the House despite the seven-month break they all enjoyed.
Maybe after a seven-month holiday they don't have the urge to work especially with elections just around the corner.
Cisco Networks
The PNG University of Technology in Lae has opened its Cisco Networking Academy on campus. The "virtual academy" is a joint initiative of the PNG government and the United Nations Development Fund (UNDP) as well as the Kuala Lumpur-based Asia Pacific Development Information Program.
University Deaths
Sir Robert Woods has started the Commission of Inquiry into the recent deaths, after civil unrest, of students at the University of Papua New Guinea. He has appealed to any members of the public with sufficient information and knowledge to come forward and assist him in his inquiry.
The inquiry is having trouble in locating people who are willing to testify. Relatives of one of the dead students have appealed to the public to come forward and provide statements of what happened.
East Sepik
Private lawyer Moses Murray will contest the East Sepik Regional seat currently held by Sir Michael Somare. Mr Murray has also registered hi new political party called the People's Freedom Party.
Ela Beach
The roadwork between Koki Point and Ela Beach are now continuing into Ela Beach itself, which has upset many residents afraid that the beachfront will now be ruined by a four-lane road.
City Violence
Recent violence around the National Capital has seen a priest shot dead whilst in bed. In another incident a grade seven student has had to steer a car whilst his father, who had been shot in the side, operated the clutch and accelerator. A gun-wielding thug had shot the father and to make matters worse a mob of people, instead of helping, were stealing recently purchased groceries from the car.
Curfew
The curfew in Port Moresby will have ended by the time most readers get to read this.
Bougainville
The peace progress in Bougainville is in danger of failing if the authorities in the national capital do not pay the provinces budgetary allocation. The National Government owe the province around K5 million.
Road Repair
Roads in six provinces may now be repaired as an agreement has been signed to repair various roads in Central, East and West New Britain, Manus, Morobe and Oro (Northern) Provinces.
The K230 million program has been planned to take four years.
University
The construction of the new 240-bed residence for students at the University of PNG has been completed.
It is hoped that the new residence will be used by overseas students and the top PNG students in a bid to attract more overseas students to the campus.
Foreign Affairs
The Chinese government has donated 20 computers to the Foreign Affairs department. The Chinese also gave 30 computers last year.
