Several F/A 18 fighter jets from USA have stopped over in Port Moresby for refuelling on their way from Amberley Air Force base in Australia to Guam although the Post Courier said they were on their way to Japan, which is true, but via Guam.

The PNG Made Trade Fair is on again. It will be held between the 9th and the 11th of November at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.
AusAid is funding five community schools in East New Britain to the tune of K6.34 million. The funds will be used by the five schools in the Pomio District and will go towards upgrading the schools so that they will be able to cater for grade seven and eight students next year.
East New Britain
The breakdown of a generator and the dry spell has caused power problems in East New Britain. The water level at the Warangoi hydro has reached a dangerously low level. Load shedding has begun and business houses and individuals with their own generators are being urged to use them.
Paul Pautani is the new national karate champion. The first PNG woman's title went to Frieda Kurabi. Over 50 fighters from several centres and different martial arts disciplines took part in the competition.
The price of fuel has been cut in PNG.
Early this week more than 60 prisoners escaped from Bomana Jail just outside Port Moresby. Police have asked for the co-operation of the public to apprehend the escapees.
In another part of PNG a remandee, who had escaped from custody, had made arrangements through his family to surrender to police but was foiled by police when they failed to turn up to rearrest him. Can it only happen in PNG?
The new Hiri queen crowned during the Hiri Moale festival is Sibona Bogehenao from Barakau village.
The mine has been granted a further extension of three months to operate without a valid water use permit.
The Bougainville Governor, John Momis and staff have been locked out of their offices due to non-payment of outstanding bills to the landlord of the building they occupy.
Andersons Foodland owned by the East New Britain Provincial government had many of their supermarket staff dressed in traditional dress over the recent PNG Independence weekend. I believe that the Stop and Shop chain of supermarkets also had their staff dress appropriately for the occasion.

East New Britain
The East New Britain Ulaveo Industrial Centre in Kokopo has been launched. The centre will be the country's second largest after the Malahang centre in Lae.
A report in the Post Courier has said that Kokopo is not safe from natural disasters. An AusAID funded project has reported that both Rabaul and Kokopo towns were considered high risk areas due to their vulnerability to volcanic activity, earthquakes and tsunami. Kokopo was the town set up to take over from Rabaul after the 1994 volcanic eruptions. The report may have come too late after millions of Kina have been poured into the development of the area.
Forty six percent of PNG's reefs have been identified as being threatened. PNG is the world's fifth largest reef nation just behind France.
PNG is set to receive sports aid to the value of K5.5 million from the government of Australia.
Laloki Mental Health Centre
Hi-Tech Industries has donated computers worth more than K2000 to the Laloki Mental Health Centre just outside the National Capital. International Monetary Fund
The IMF has praised the government for achieving political and economic stability under what the IMF has said were very difficult circumstances.
The IMF said that inflation had declined and international reserves have increased.
A big eight-week campaign is currently underway to raise awareness of HIV-AIDS. The campaign is set to reach all provinces through radio, television and newspapers as well as posters, billboards, public meetings and community events.
The PNG Banking Corporation has hinted that it plans to close the only bank on Buka Island and Bougainville. The bank is currently closed with only the automatic teller machine working after trouble with a customer who wanted to cash someone else's cheque (check) and a drunk that harassed staff after-hours.
Fig Feeding Insects
A remote village in the Chimbu Province has opened a research laboratory to monitor and study fig feeding insects. The research station is part of a new Community Education Centre built by the Sangamanga Culture and Education Preservation Group.
Clinically diagnosed malaria is still the leading cause of outpatient presentations, the second leading cause of admissions and the second leading cause of death within PNG. In the year 2000 statistics reveal that there were over 1.5 million suspected cases of malaria which lead to 617 deaths. Almost 225,500 blood films were examined and 36 percent showed malaria parasites.
Areas above 1600 metres tends to be too high for malaria but between 1200 and 1600 metres there are intermittent cases of malaria being reported with death rates being high due to a lack of immunity in the population.
After over eight years the National Capital District sees the return of the motorcycle mounted traffic police. The motorcycles have been off the road since the last training course was held at the Bomana Police College in 1992.
Doctors who are members of the National Doctors Association are now entitled to a comprehensive insurance policy with Workers Mutual Insurance PNG Limited. The insurance will cover over 300 doctors and their spouses and children under 18.
The various road works around Port Moresby are progressing well. It is planned that more land will be reclaimed along Ela Beach to make the beach wider for city residents to enjoy.

Dengue Fever is on the increase. The number of people diagnosed with Dengue Fever so far this year has increased from the figures for 1999 and 2000.
Miss PNG Quest
The rules have changed for this year's quest. The overall winner will now be the person who raises the most money for Red Cross. A contestant has called on all sectors of the community to support the quest especially since the destruction of the World Trade Centre has highlighted the need for such organisations as the Red Cross.
A Music concert will take place on the 8th of December to officially celebrate the International Volunteers Day under the UNV umbrella.
