Huli People

-- The Huli people live in the central mountains of Papua New Guinea, at a
latitude of six degrees below the equator and at a mean altitude of about
1500 meters above sea level. They number over 65,000 (Kloss and McConnel 1981),
grouped in clans (hamigini) and subclans (hamigini emene) throughout the area
they now claim as their own.
News Items
Kikori - Gulf Province
Tuberculosis is one of the top reasons for admission to hospital and death
in Kikori, Gulf province. There are over 200 registered cases in Kikori.
Water Problems
Settlers living at the Oro settlement outside the city of Port Moresby have
been living without a water supply for two years. Children are tramping over
2 kilometres to get water from a broken water pipe. And you thought you had
it bad!
UPNG
The University of PNG Vice-Chancellor has said that there will be no increases
in university tuition fees this coming year. There will be an increase in
the residential costs for students equivalent to about two "six packs"
of beer something the vice chancellor thinks that most university students
should be able to afford as it equates to about 85 toea per week per student.
The increases are to cover the cost of food increases due to inflation.
Koki Primary School
Thanks to Rotary clubs in Australian the Koki Primary School in Port Moresby
has received a collection of videotapes and a video player. The titles include
classics titles such as Treasure Island. Lady Carol Kidu received the gifts
on behalf of the school.
Australian Federal Police
A team from the Australian Federal Police has arrived in PNG to firm up on
the K2 billion enhanced cooperation program that will see the deployment of
police from around Australia in PNG. Police from Victoria, a state of Australia,
are concerned that they will be getting paid less than police deployed from
other Australian states simply because their pay scale is lower. They claim
that all the police at the same level should get paid the same for a fair
days work regardless of what state they come from.
Scouting
Tomadu Nawa a Scout pioneer, PNG Bible Society manager and World War II hero
from Salamaua, Morobe Province died at the end of July. Mr Nawa, 78, was PNG
Scout Commissioner from 1962 to 1975. In 1975 he joined the Bible Society
as the Lae depot manager for 17 years before retiring.
HIV / AIDS
It has been revealed that many doctors are being threatened to record a different
cause of death rather than recoding it as HIV/AIDS. Many relatives are fearful
that any insurance payment will be placed in jeopardy if the real reason is
recorded. This possibly has lead to the figures for the number of people dying
from AIDS to be incorrect. It has also been reported that many HIV/AIDS patients
seek treatment under false names and addresses making it difficult for the
Health Department to follow up on patient care.
Snakes
According to a clinical toxicologist and herpetologist from the James Cook
University in Australia the Mekeo area of Central Province has one of the
highest incidences of snakebite and mortality due to snakebites in the world.
For the period from January 1997 through to December 2001 there was an average
of 561.9 cases for every 100,000 people per year. There are only a few places
in the world where snakebite cases are higher than this. In some areas the
rate was up to six times higher than this average. The detailed results of
the study will be available later this year in a scientific publication.
100 Metre Sprint
19-year-old Mae Koime from Gulf Province has bettered her time in pre-Olympic
competition in Hungary. She managed to post a time of 12.12 seconds her best
time ever for the 100 metre sprint. The time is also a PNG national record.
She also managed to get under 25 seconds in the 200 metre event her second
time this year.
Tribal War
19 people have lost their lives in a tribal war going on in Tambul District
of the Western Highlands. The provincial police commander has called on the
leaders of the warring clans to meet and make peace for the sake of the their
clansmen. The fight is between the Rendi Nema and the Kipala Warepa tribes
who live in hamlets at the edge of Mount Giluwe. The toll of 19 could be higher
because it is believed that not all deaths have been reported to government
officials. The tribesmen are now using guns instead of traditional bows and
arrows so the tactics of engagement have changed. No longer is it several
men using bows, arrows and spears confronting other warriors it is now groups
carrying out ambushes on others using firearms.
Diesel Increase
There has been another increase in the price of diesel. This latest increase
has seen the price reach K2 per litre. It is expected that with the rising
world prices of crude oil that the cost of all fuel will increase soon. A
final draft of a review on petroleum prices carried out by the Independent
Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) is due in September.
PNG Defence Force
The PNG Defence Force (PNGDF) plans to register all its assets. The PNGDF
will receive help from the Australian Government via the PNG Australia Defence
Cooperative program. It has been claimed that having an accurate idea of the
assets of the defence will help it to rebuild and recapitalise the PNGDF.
There has not been an asset register for the PNGDF since independence in 1975.
PNGDF Recruitment
The PNG Defence Force is recruiting student cadets from grade 12 graduates.
They have already gone through the process in the Southern Region and selected
56 candidates. They are currently in East New Britain selecting candidates
from the New Guinea Islands Region. The candidates will be put through a selection
process testing medical fitness, psychology and English language. Successful
students will attend an intensive 18-month training course at the Defence
Academy at Igam Barracks in Lae.
Angau Hospital
Angau Hospital located in Lae, Morobe Province is almost out of oxygen with
only enough on hand for a week's supply. If a supply is not found then the
hospital will have to scale down operations. Presently only the ICU and operating
theatre have access to oxygen. The hospital has blamed the National Health
Department for failing to release funds in a timely fashion to BOC gases.
Accidental Shooting
A young man is in Angau hospital after being shot accidentally by a warder
who was chasing an escapee from Lae courthouse. The man is in a critical condition
with a bullet lodged in the lower part of is head. Police recaptured the escapee
later.
Kavieng Fishery
The Kavieng Fishery project including fishery and office, funded by the Asian
Development Bank has been finished for over four months and still is not being
used. The complex could represents a major income generating activity for
the people of New Ireland if managed correctly.
Justin Kili
Justin Kili affectionately known as "JK" has moved to become
the general manager of the Word Publishing Company. JK has spent what seems
to be a lifetime in radio starting as a trainee broadcaster in Bougainville
in 1972. All his time has spent in broadcasting with the National Broadcasting
Corporation, Kalang FM, FM 100 and Yumi FM.
PNG Police
The Police Commissioner, Sam Inguba, has said on talkback radio that the
PNG Police Force is toothless. It is undermanned, lacks resources, and does
not meet United Nations standards for policing a nation. Mr Inguba stresses
that this could be the cause of the crime upsurge and the increase in tribal
warfare i remote villages. Under United Nations Standards there should be
one policeman for every 350 people. The PNG population is in excess of 5.2
million and the police force has only 4,800 members. This is approx one policeman
to every 1080 people.
Operation Open Heart
Doctors and nurses, part of the Open Heart Operation, have successfully operated
on many patients.. In previous years it has been normal for seventy five percent
of the people operated on to be children with heart defects and this year
it would appear that the ratio will remain the same. A total of 52 people
were operated on. The volunteer doctors and nurses were so keen to help people
in need that they even said they would work on the morning of their departure
back to Australia.
The Port Moresby General Hospital Operation Open Heart program received many
donations from public companies such as the TST group of companies. Without
this support the program would not be able to be run each year.
Rotary Help
A young eleven-year-old girl from Isurava village along the Kokoda Trail
has been operated on to fix a hole in the heart in Sydney Australia thanks
to Rotary Overseas Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC). The girl, Cathy Nitura,
was operated on by a grandson of a World War II veteran who fought along the
Kokoda Trail. ROMAC met all the costs of the life-saving operation and both
Cathy and her father were looked after by Rotary club members in Australia.
Governor General
The Governor General, Sir Paulias Matane, is worshipping at various denominations
each Sunday.
So far he has worshipped with United Church congregations at Sioni Kami Memorial
Church, Tubusereia United Church and the George Brown Memorial United Church
at Gerehu. He has also attended services at St. John's Anglican
Cathedral Church on the hill in Port Moresby, the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
English Congregation at Koki as well as with the Roman Catholics at St. Mary's
Cathedral in Port Moresby.

On Wednesday the 1st of December 1982. He was elected through an exhaustive
secret ballot winning the job in a final showdown with former lands minister
Thomas Kavali by a vote of 59 to 37. He officially succeeded Sir Tore Lokoloko
on the 1st of March 1983
Bambu Primary School
The headmaster of Bambu Primary School in Madang province has been jailed
for misappropriating K2,000 belonging to the school. The father of four has
been a headmaster for 18 years.
Gaming Board
The government has blocked the hole that allowed politicians to dip into
the trust funds maintained by the gaming board. The money is now deposited
directly into consolidated revenue to help prop up the PNG budget. The gaming
board funds have been abused in the past leading to the dismissal and jailing
of some high profile people.
Kaugere Primary School
Lady Carol Kidu has presented Kaugere Primary School in Port Moresby with
20 new desks. The school also received 500 Telikads from the sales and marketing
manager of GNP. Telikom PNG has a prepaid system that can be used from any

Junior Squash
The Port Moresby Squash Club will be holding an open day for new juniors
on Saturday 21 August at 1 pm at the Port Moresby Squash Club. The Club would
like to encourage any juniors from the age of 8 up to 17 (boys and girls)
to come along and try out the game of squash. It doesn't matter if they have
never hit a ball before.
Telikom Sale
The 51 percent sale of Telikom to an overseas company is still making headlines.
Many people are claiming that the credentials of the company need to be investigated
thoroughly. The chairman of the Telikom board, who is fiercely nationalistic,
had to back track after ordering an independent valuation of Telikom bypassing
the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) and making a request
direct to the Prime Minister. There have been claims and counter claims over
the deal. Even Rod Mitchell from the National Superannuation Fund has had
his comments aired in letters to the editor. He urges caution in any sale
of Telikom.
Wamp Nga
The Highlands based Wamp Nga Holdings Limited has a new General Manager.
The new man, Michael Makap, is the first national to hold the position. Mr
Makap has been with the company for 14 years. Along with the announcement
of the new General Manager the company announced a dividend of K200,000 for
shareholders.
Moresby Elections
David Unagi is the tenth person to nominate for the vacant Moresby North-East
seat. The candidates so far are - David Unagi, Casper Wollom, Philip Taku,
Mathias Karani, Jimmy Misina Varika, Norman Fernandes, Norman Takis, Julius
Kera, Jacob Ivaroa and Mek Onguglo. Nominations have now closed.
Others to nominate after Mr Unagi are - Wari Vele, John Kaupa, Luke Paka,
Roy Amburi, Kakare Lare, Nelson Tali, Michael Badui, Robert Egareka, John
Kelowa, Dino Sine, Nathan Mapiso and Thomas Wemin making a total of 22 people
who have nominated for the Moresby North-East seat.
InterOil Refinery
The InterOil Refinery has produced and sold its first shipment of diesel
fuel. The tanker "Essberger" took on the first delivery of Port
Moresby Diesel for delivery across the Port Moresby Harbour to fill tanks
on the shore at Kanudi. It may have been a short voyage but it was one of
great significance for PNG. Petrol will be produced in a few weeks.
The refinery has a capacity of 32,500 barrel of crude a day when it is fully
commissioned.
Divine Word University
A librarian from the Divine Word Library has urged primary and community
schools to set up and maintain libraries on behalf of their students. Many
schools do not have proper libraries to house their library books. Some schools
have had libraries but due to luck of funding allowed them to become run down.
