PNG Association of Australia

The recent history of PNG is intimately bound up with the people who made PNG their home and in many cases, their life's work. It is therefore fitting, but also with deep regret, that the PNG Association of Australia web site records the passing of members and friends. -- http://www.pngaa.net/vale.htm

Takuu Island

Takuu Island, once known as the Mortlock Islands, is part of PNG and 200 kilometres north-east of Bougainville, the atoll is made up of 13 islets with a combined land area of less than a square kilometre - none of it now more than one metre above mean sea level. The island is under threat of being submerged not by a Tsunami but by one big wave. The big tides, which occur around twice a year, sometimes see a low tide up to two metres below normal and -- ominously -- a high tide 1.5 metres higher than normal. A film is being made about the island and there is also a blog that can be read -- http://www.takuufilm.blogspot.com/

Once again the Uninteruprtibhle Power Supply (UPS) at Telikom's Boroko Exchange has been allowed to run down causing havoc to the equipment it is supposed to protect. Port Moresby was once again isolated fromt he rest of teh country and the world while Teliom technicians scambled to try and rectify all the faults caused by the UPS failure. It seems that nothing changes as this is not the first time that power probelms have knocked out the telephone exchange.

Maps of PNG

Isaac Sutcliffe possibly in Brisbane by his email address has been looking for maps showing local level governement (LLG) boundaries. He has the following to offer --

quote

I have found some cool stuff online. The UPNG has an online map that has all the district and LLG boundaries, complete with labels... and there is also an incomplete and slightly inaccurate representation of the individual wards and census results of some areas available on another site. Links:

http://gis.mortonblacketer.com.au/upngis/instructions.htm

http://coombs.anu.edu.au/SpecialProj/PNG/GMAP

These sites have proven invaluable, but it is still difficult to get concise information online.

I am using all this to build Wikipedia articles on PNG. So far I have documented all the political subdivisions of New Ireland, and about half of Western Province (where I grew up). I am also reconstructing the provincial flags, there are only a few I havent done, and my work on the flags has been for the most part some of the best work available on the net. Alswo, I am doing a lot of other work to document PNG, mostly towns and geographic features. It is amazing how much important stuff is missing! It is slow work, and it would be groovy if there was anything else at all you know of that might help!

end quote

As in the past, the symbol of the Hiri Moale Festivals today remains the giant double-hull Lakatois (canoes) which plied these waters risking many lives over many months to trade fish for food from the west. Today, the Lakatois (sometimes spelt lagatois) are sailed into Ela Beach by certain chosen villages accompanied by singing and dancing. A highlight of the Hiri Moale Festival is the Hiri Hanenamo or Hiri Queen quest.
