New Governor-General
Michael Ogio, currently the minister for higher education in the Somare Cabinet, has been elected as the next Governor General of PNG. He polled 65 votes overwhelmingly defeating the opposition's candidate, Sir Pato Kakaraya, who only managed to get 23 votes for the position. Parliament was adjourned immediately after the vote until the 10th of May.
Michael Ogio, will not be sworn in until that date. The election of a new Governor General was forced upon the country after the re-election of Sir Paulias Matane was annulled by the Supreme Court in December. There will now have to be by-election for his North Bougainville open electorate seat.
PNG's first female Premier, Enni Moitz, is unhappy with the nomination process saying candidates were given 24 hours to secure 15 signatures in order to be nominated. She says by law the candidates should have been given ten days.
