News Items

Operation Open Heart

Operation Open Heart (OOH) has been running for many years (started in 1993) and it is estimated that over 500 children have had their life extended thanks to OOH.

Barrick PNG has donated K10,000 to the OOH Foundation to support the life-saving event set to begin next month. This brings the total contributions for this year's operations to K400,000. Specialists from Australia are expected to arrive in Port Moresby on the 23rd of July to commence the open-heart surgery.





Rugby League Expansion

The expansion of the Australian National Rugby League (NRL) has been put on hold until maybe as late as 2015. With a new broadcast deal to be in place from 2013, bidders have been lining up to become the new sides in the competition. PNG, Perth, Brisbane, Ipswich in Queensland, the NSW Central Coast, Central Queensland and Wellington have expressed an interest in joining the NRL from 2013.





Project HOPE

Project HOPE conducts land-based medical training and health education programs in many countries including PNG. Project HOPE was created in 1958. The organization is dedicated to providing a lasting solution to world health problems. Its focus is providing medical assistance and education to people around the world so they can better care for themselves.

Malaysian 'Assassinated'

A Malaysian has been shot dead while driving in the capital Port Moresby. Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Fred Yakasa has said in a statement "We have reason to believe that this was an assassination due to the manner in which the shooting was carried out".

Hidden and Neglected

The Doctors Without Borders/Médecins San Frontières (MSF) report, Hidden and Neglected: The medical and emotional needs of survivors of family and sexual violence in PNG, highlights the urgent, unmet medical and emotional needs of survivors of family and sexual violence in the country,

The report presents the experiences of MSF's patients. It is based on first-hand testimonies of staff and survivors, and on previously unseen medical data.





Pacific Games Village

The Pacific Games will be held in PNG during 2015. The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) will be used to accommodate participating countries as the Games Village. A development plan is in place to construct 10 new halls of residence for 3,000 people, seven international standard sports facilities, and a Great Hall with a capacity of 3,000, in addition to the already approved and funded new Law and Science buildings.

Son of a/g PM Charged

The adopted son of acting Prime Minister, Sam Abal, has been charged with murdering a waitress, whose body was found at the politician's home with her throat slit.

Police fear payback for a/g PM -- http://giaman.com/pg/?ac761d -- The cultural practice of payback has a long tradition in the South Pacific's most populous island nation, with a murder victim's clan often taking out revenge on the killer or his family.





AusAID Donation

The Australian Government, through AusAID, has donated four million textbooks for PNG schools. AusAID is spending K350 million to supply and transport the four million textbooks over a five-year period to schools around the country.





Kongo Coffee Donation

Kongo Coffee, from Chimbu, has donated coffee to relief workers in devastated cities in the north of Japan that were badly affected by the earthquake and tsunami disaster in March. The Post Courier reports the cartons have been received by Machida Crane Lions Club and distributed to five cities.





Digicel and APNG Partner

Digicel PNG has partnered with Airlines PNG (APNG) to provide Customer Care and Call Centre services to APNG under a one-year contract.

WWII Pilot Buried

U.S. Army Air Corps 2nd Lt. Richard S. Ryrholm, a World War II fighter pilot, shot down in 1943, has finally been laid to rest at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Arlington, USA. Ryrholm was shot down while flying over present-day PNG.

Mercy Works

In the PNG highlands, the Mercy Works Goroka and Mt Hagen programme is helping communities tackle troubling levels of poverty. One of the programme's guiding principles is to respond to all people without discrimination.

Slush Fund

The Catholic Bishops Conference warns that there are increasing signs of the so-called slush fund being used by MPs for electioneering and personal profit. The Conference has called for an end to the current system of allocating constituency development funds for MPs to distribute.

The advice has been reviewed and reissued. It contains new information in the Summary and under Safety and Security: Local Travel (in June 2011, there were a number of recent violent incidents in Central and Southern Bougainville) and Civil Unrest/Political Tensions following recent murders in the town of Popondetta in Oro Province, law and order has deteriorated. The potential for more violence exists). The overall level of the advice has not changed.

Police Helping Car Thieves

It has been claimed in Parliament members of the police force have been collaborating with criminals in car thefts and receiving ransom payments. It has been claimed there are over 50 cars stolen every day in Port Moresby. Deputy PNG party leader and member for Anglimp-South Waghi Jamie Maxtone-Graham said he was one of the victims of such car thefts after his vehicle was stolen by criminals and only returned after he paid them a ransom.

Kimbe Netball

A pallet load of netball gear courtesy of Netball Victoria (Australia) has made its way to Kimbe, West New Britain province. The gear became available after a recent re-brand of the Netball Victoria logo. The Booroondara Netball Association in Victoria also managed to secure an ultra sound machine.





Ramu Court Case

A decision is expected soon in the long-running battle by local landowners against various aspects of the Ramu nickel/cobalt mine. It is too early to say whether the Ramu decision will set a precedent, but disposing of unwanted ore has been a thorny issue in PNG since the case of BHP Billiton's Ok Tedi operation and the downstream effect of its mining.

PNG / US Deal Renewed

The National Museum and Art Gallery has renewed an agreement with the United States army with the aim of recovering and identifying Americans who lost their lives during the Second World War. More than 2,000 Americans are believed to have died in PNG during the Second World War.

Cabinet Reshuffle

The acting Prime Minister, Sam Abal, has implemented a radical reshuffle of members of the PNG cabinet. Mr Abal removed Treasurer Peter O'Neill and gave the job, which includes the Finance Ministry, back to Patrick Pruaitch.
