Motorbike Enduro

On the 24th and 25th of March 2012 the people of Morobe and parts of the Highlands will see two days of motorcycle racing through the most challenging terrain in PNG followed by a week of various length trail rides.

Police Motorbikes

A 27 year old from the Southern Highlands will make history when she becomes the first female police motorcyclist. Esther Kende will graduate from the Bomana Police College with eight other colleagues as a professional traffic motorcyclist. This will bring the number of police motorcyclists to 12.

Morumbi Oil & Gas has reported it is about to commence an exploration program on its 341 sq km property near Popondetta in Oro province.

Mapping PNG

Aerial and satellite mapping of PNG is a challenge due to the ground is obscured for up to 90% of the year. Geoimage, a privately owned Australian company and an award winning supplier of satellite imagery, is getting around that difficulty by using ClearView TM technology and existing Landsat satellites to map the country.

Pedalling Nurses

Australia has the flying doctor service to serve remote communities but PNG Nurses at Kapuna Hospital will soon have at least 20 mountain bikes to travel throughout the Lae river delta delivering primary health care, doing referrals and providing education to villagers about preventing Aids, malaria, hepatitis and cholera.

Tribal Violence

Police say seven people have been gunned down and several others wounded in a tribal fight in PNG's Enga province this week.

Violence in PNG

A Facebook page called Papua New Guinean's Against Violence has gone viral. Since going live on the 5th of October this year, over 5,500 people have joined the group, which aims to raise the profile of Domestic Violence in PNG.

Somare Mentally Fit

The PNG Supreme Court has found the former Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, to be mentally fit and never "of unsound mind" despite having serious health problems.

Detainees Escape

Thirty detainees, have escaped from the Jomba Police cells in Madang province. 11 of the escapees are charged with crimes including rape, murder, possession of firearms and ammunition. Four police officers have been suspended over the incident.





WWII Bombs

Australian and New Zealand military personnel are hoping to train members of the PNG Defence Force in methods used to clear ordinance left over from the Second World War.

WWII Remnants Found

The New Zealand Navy has located several World War II wrecks in Rabaul's Simpson Harbour using 3D sonar imagery onboard the Navy's hydrographic ship, HMNZS Resolution. The images captured included an apparently intact Japanese Zero fighter in 18 metres of water and at least two other previously unchartered ships.

Porgera Tribal Fight

A fight between different clans near the Karik airstrip in Enga Province has resulted in the death of nine people and three others seriously injured. Police reinforcements have moved into the area. Karik is the main airstrip for the Porgera mine.

Rural Poverty

CARE Australia has released a bleak report about poverty in the Obura-Wonenara district of the Eastern Highlands province, which is a result of collaboration between CARE Australia and the Australian National University's Development Policy Centre. The report highlights the ongoing issue of disadvantage in an area, which is home to 15 percent of the country's population.

State Wedding

The Governor General His Excellency Grand Chief Sir Michael Ogio, GCL, GCMG, KSt.J has married his Solomon Island bride Esmie Ereoli in a first ever state wedding. About 170 guests including government officials, state dignitaries, church members and the Bougainville community were present to witness the event held in Port Moresby at St Mary's Cathedral. The bride will now be known by the title of Lady Esmie and will make her home at Government House, Konedobu.

Aussie Police to Return?

The Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, has said Australia will provide a range of training and support services to improve the capabilities of the police in PNG. PNG PM, Peter O'Neill and Ms Gillard also agreed on a plan to place AFP members with the RPNGC. The elections are just around the corner and police discipline issues and corruption are often seen as major problems especially during elections in PNG. Private security companies have flourished in the country often taking over much of the ordinary policing duties

Badminton Roadshow

Oceania Badminton Development Manager Nadia Bleaken has just returned from a 10 day Promotional Roadshow visit to Port Moresby. Nadia was happily surprised with the amount of badminton already being played throughout the country, and the level of play seen in the clubs in Port Moresby.

The PNG Australia Alumni Association (PNGAAA) was incorporated in 2006 and is made up of PNG graduates from Australian educational institutions as AusAID scholarship holders or as privately sponsored students. United Nations

The United Nations has recently celebrated 30 years of partnership with the PNG Government following the opening of the first United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office in PNG in 1981.

Contaminated Fuel Ruled Out

Investigators have ruled out contaminated fuel as a possible cause of the Airlines PNG crash that recently killed 28 Papua New Guineans near Madang. A memorial service has been held at Divine Word University in Madang for the 11 family members who died while flying to attend the graduation of six students, and for the other 17 crash victims.
