Kavieng Hospital out of Drugs

Kavieng General Hospital in New Ireland Province is currently facing a shortage of medical and drug supplies. -- http://www.postcourier.com.pg/20111115/news03.htm -- In the last two weeks, the hospital had been experiencing a shortage of main drugs such as amoxilyn and malarial drugs.

 





Miss South Pacific Pageant

The 2011 Miss South Pacific PNG contest has been won by Miss Nambawan Trophy Ltd Sarah Karo. She is from Hula and Gabagaba in Central province. Karo will represent PNG as its cultural ambassador at the Miss South Pacific pageant to be held in Samoa next month. The contestants were judged in five categories: Bilum wear, sarong wear, talent, traditionally-inspired attire and stage interviews.

First runner-up was Miss Dekenai Construction Yalinu Poya
Second runner-up was Miss Frangipani Car Hires Navancca Leeanne Eyres
Third runner-up title was Miss Leahy Lewin Nutley Sullivan Augaia Jane Dalton

Other special awards went to --

Miss Children by Choice Nicole Jeune, who took the title of Best Bilum Wear,
Miss Leahy Lewin Nutley Sullivan Augaia Jane Dalton took the title of Miss Photogenic,
Miss Frangipani car Hires Navancca Leeanne Eyres took the title of Best Talent
and the Title of Miss Friendship was a tie between Miss Collingwood Bay Blanche Yogomin and Miss Dekenai Construction Yalinu Poya

Scoop of the Year

Post Courier journalist Simon Eroro made several news bulletins in Australia when he recently was named the winner of 2011 News Limited News Awards "Scoop of the Year" category for his interview with the OPM on the Indonesian border. The awards are an annual event held by News Limited for all its newspapers in the region to recognise excellence in journalism among its reporters.

Unesco Board

PNG is among 32 countries that have been elected into the executive board of the United Nations educational, scientific and cultural organisation (Unesco).

7th Billion Baby

As part of the 7th billion baby celebrations around the world baby Tiara Emmanuel has been nominated as the baby to represent PNG. Baby Tiara was born to 17-year-old, Kanua Darua, from Kerowagi in Chimbu province. The mother is a student at Kerowagi Secondary School and will be returning to complete her Grade 10 education next year. Baby Tiara will also be representing babies born of teenage parents and the risks associated with teen pregnancies.





Contaminated Water

A water and sanitation engineer, working with the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Program (RWSSP) in PNG, has claimed there are four million Papua New Guineans drinking contaminated water. Stuart Jordan said in a study carried out in a village in Central province, his team discovered faeces contamination in water that was well over the World Health Organisation standard of 0-10 ppm (part per million).

The RWSSP is a project funded by the European Union with various water projects in 17 provinces. The program advocates that rural communities must have proper and clean water that is disease free for their use. It also encourages healthy practices through the simple hand washing method using soap and water and also encourages building of proper toilets.

Patients on the Run

The Post Courier has revealed twelve patients recently escaped from the Laloki Mental Hospital just outside Port Moresby. It is believed two of the escapees have died.

Police Training

Several members of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) have received training in investigative and policing techniques by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations at the Gordon Police Barracks in the National Capital District. The training was organised by the United States Embassy

Kokoda Track Safer

Australian Defence Force explosive ordnance disposal experts have made the Kokoda Track a little bit safer by helping to dispose of dangerous items at Myola near the top of the Owen Stanley Range and at Owers Corner. The disposal exercise was part of the Operation RENDER SAFE 2011 deployment. In addition to the ordnance located on the Kokoda Track, Operation RENDER SAFE removed more than two thousand items with a net explosive quantity in excess of five tonnes from the Rabaul/East New Britain area.

Generator Failure

Floods have shut down generators at Ramu One powerhouse at Yonki in the Eastern Highlands resulting in the loss of up to 50 megawatts of electricity capacity that is normally supplied to Madang, Lae, Bulolo and parts of the Highlands as well as major resource projects in these areas. PNG Power engineers are working to get the generators working and restore supply.

Buka Hospital

AusAID has donated a sterilising machine to the Buka General Hospital. The machine will sterilise items in less than five minutes for the hospital.

Buka Hospital deals with 200 surgical cases and up to 150 deliveries per month.

November Fuel Prices

Petrol prices for Port Moresby were K3.47 per litre, down from last month's K3.53. Diesel is K2.91 per litre, down from K2.96 and kerosene is K2.83 per litre, down from K2.86.





2012 National Elections

It has been reported by the Post Courier that many of the provinces have missed the 31st of October deadline for the submission of elector data to the PNG Electoral Commission for the coming 2012 National Elections. Three provinces have completed their rolls - West New Britain, Central and Northern provinces.

Human Development Index

PNG has been ranked 153 out of 187 countries surveyed on the Human Development Index, falling below most of its smaller South Pacific island neighbours. This places PNG in the last of four rankings from very high human development to low human development.

Buk Bilong Pikinini

Buk Bilong Pikinini (BBP) has opened eight centres stocked with lots of children's books. On average about 300 children attend each centre during morning and afternoon sessions. The eighth centre was opened on the 4th of October 2011 and is located in Port Moresby on the campus of the University of PNG and next to the largest settlement in town. This is the sixth Buk Bilong Pikinini to be opened in Port Moresby. The first Buk bilong Pikinini library was opened in April 2008, at the Children's HIV, Tuberculosis and Malnutrition ward at the Port Moresby General Hospital. The libraries outside Port Moresby are in Lae and Goroka.

APEC Bid

PNG has put in a bid to host the 26th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in 2018. The 2018 meeting has been estimated to cost the government about K231 million.

The APEC member nations are Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Brunei Darussalam, USA, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, China, Philippines, Peru, Russia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Chile, Canada, and Mexico. APEC is the primary vehicle for promoting open trade and practical economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region.

Chief Justice Suspended

The National Executive Council has suspended the PNG Chief Justice, Sir Salamo Injia, and a tribunal appointed to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against him. Acting Prime Minister, Belden Namah, said the allegations raised against the chief justice dated back to 2009 and had nothing to do with the East Sepik Supreme Court reference, a statement re-affirmed by Attorney-General Dr Allan Marat.

Constitutional Crisis

A constitutional crisis has erupted in Papua New Guinea after the Supreme Court ordered the arrest of the Deputy Prime Minister, Belden Namah, and the Attorney-General, Allan Marat, a day after the government attempted to suspend the Chief Justice.

"The orders, signed and issued by the Supreme Court justice Bernard Sakora, were delivered to the office of the commissioner this morning," acting Police Commissioner, Tom Kulunga said. "Police are acting on the court orders."
