Lae Port Contract
A Chinese firm has won a K600 million contract to develop Phase 1 of the Lae Tide Terminal Project. The China Harbour Engineering Company successfully won the bid for the project that is estimated to take 30 months to complete.
Freeway Washed Away
A portion of the Poreporena freeway between Waigani Drive and Wards Rd, adjacent to the Hohola Demonstration Primary School, has been washed away after parts of Moresby received over 80 mm of rain. Workmen had begun to repair a damaged section of the freeway when the sudden rain undermined their work and caused the closure of the four lane road. It is expected it will take a month for the repair work to be completed. A temporary fix will allow motorists to pass over the washed away section. Traffic in and around the area has slowed to less than walking pace while the freeway was closed.

Reporter Threatened

Many citizens have raised concerns over the incident that happened to Patrick Talu, a young journalist and Business Editor of the Post Courier in Port Moresby. Talu was covering an event at the Unagi Oval. Talu said it was an unprofessional and primitive act by ill trained policemen.
IEA
The International Education Agency TAFE college now has a new manager. Mr Phil Oakley, with experience in PNG, Malawi and Indonesia, will run the IEA College.
Office of Higher Education
Prof David Kavanamur has been appointed as director-general of the Office of Higher Education by the National Executive Council. Kavanamur replaced former acting director-general Dr William Tagis on a three-year term.

Cartoon Contest
A cartoonist with The National has won the Pacific category of the United Nations-sponsored Asia-Pacific Cartoon Contest. Biliso Osake, who has been with the newspaper since its inception, said he was humbled and happy that the United Nation's had selected his cartoon on climate change.
The objective of the contest was to support advocacy that brings people to the centre of climate change and human development debates. The contest encouraged people from Asia-Pacific developing countries to portray issues of concern related to climate change in the region from a people's perspective. -- http://www.cartooncontestasiapacific.com

Highlands Highway
Peter O'Neill has said the Government would spend K3 billion to fix the 600 kilometre long Highlands Highway. The highway links the port of Lae to the main towns in the Highlands and many high value resource projects including the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga province and the Liquefied Natural Gas Project in Hela province.
Asian Replacement
The government has launched a campaign to help its citizens replace the Asian migrants who have in recent years taken over most of the country's small businesses. Richard Maru, managing director of the National Development Bank which is leading the campaign, said that 90 per cent of the country's retail sector -- stores and "kai bars" that sell basic fast-foods -- is now in the hands of Asian entrepreneurs.

Waigani Shop Robbed
Fats Trading in Waigani was robbed recently by an armed gang. The robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash, mobile phones, digital cameras, flex cards and cigarettes after they held up staff and customers. The Waigani Police Station is located about 100m from where the robbery took place.

Crocodile Literacy Contest
The short story award in the 2012 Crocodile Price Literacy Contest will be sponsored by Steamships Trading Company. The Crocodile Prize aims to strengthen and enhance PNG's national literature. The sponsorship by Steamships will allow the winning author to receive a cash prize and also a 10,000 copy print run of the Crocodile Prize book.
Land Records
The National Reports -- All land dealings from records of titles to issuance of notices will be prepared electronically once the property and rating system under the Land Enhancement and Application Project (LEAP) is completed. Acting secretary for Lands and Physical Planning, John Ofoi said the project was the way forward for the department as it would allow the officers to scan and attach documents electronically to land records.

Water PNG
This year marks the silver jubilee of Water PNG, formerly known as the PNG Waterboard. Water PNG supplies safe clean drinking water and sanitation services to the people of PNG. Water PNG provides these services to 17 declared water districts around the country. Eda Ranu supplies water to the National Capital District.
Chief Justice
The National Court has issued a permanent stay on proceedings against Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia citing the charges an abuse of process and fundamentally flawed. Sir Salamo was arrested last week and charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice in a case involving K213,000.

A memo from a judge circulated within the court has suggested that the arrest of Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia was an attack on the judiciary which it should do something about it.

Limestone Project
Peter O'Neill has committed to give K10 million towards the limestone project in Chuave, Chimbu province. The funding will enable the Simbu Government and the Provincial Administration to expedite the ground work for the proposed Limestone Mining project in the province.
Unique ID Card System
The Electoral Commission has announced the Unique ID Card System will not be used until the 2017 elections. The Electoral Commissioner said there was a need to use technology to assit in the elections but that technology must be introduced with poroper preparation, trials, checks and balances before hand.
