PX Anniversary

Air Niugini celebrates its 40th birthday in November. A reunion is planned in Brisbane, Australia for the 2nd of November. It will be held at Riverside Receptions at 50 Oxlade Drive, New Farm, on Saturday the 2nd of November 2013. The function will commence at 1530, finger food/canapés etc. will be served from 1700 onwards and buffet dinner at 1930.

The cost for pre-dinner canapés and dinner is $75.00 per person and will need to be paid into the reunion account by 1st October 2013. If you are interested please contact the newsletter and I will email the relevant details to you.

Free Education

The Papua New Guinea government will legislate to ensure free education is compulsory, Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says. He said this would ensure "no child is left out of school".

The Governor of Enga province says public servants need to take ownership of state-funded projects if basic service delivery is to improve throughout the country.

Renewable Energy

The World Bank will advise the PNG government to help the country expand electricity access for millions in Port Moresby and in rural communities, under an $8 million technical assistance project approved today by the Bank's Board of Directors.

EHP School Peace

A peace ceremony has been held for the Asaroka Lutheran Secondary School 20km north-west of Goroka at the Daulo District headquarters at Asaro. The ceremony was to allay any fears the community had after election related violence.

Biometric System

The Lae district in the Morobe province will be the first to use the biometric system. The roll out of the system is part of the government's attempt at improving future elections. The introduction of the biometric electronic identification system in the country has been approved by the National Executive Council.

New Marine Species

Scientists have discovered new species of sea slugs, feather stars and amphipods in the Madang Lagoon on the north coast of PNG.

Coffee Rotting

Coffee and tea are rotting in the Waria and Garaina Valleys of the Bulolo district of Morobe province. The road that was supposed to bring these commodities to markets in Lae is in dire need of repair and maintenance.

Kavieng Hospital

Head of Kavieng provincial hospital Dr Alphonse Tei says the hospital is in dire need of maintenance with the most urgent being the operating theatre.

Bridge Destroyed

Surimam Bridge near Ramu Sugar, a key bridge between Lae and Madang, has been destroyed by flooding. Road transport between Madang and the Highlands and Lae has been cut off as a result.

PNG Cricket

The general manager of Cricket PNG says the acceptance of the country's national cricket team into the South Australian Premier League will open up new opportunities for his players. The cricket team has become the first national sporting team from PNG to be accepted to compete in an Australian domestic competition.

Kerema

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has indicated that Kerema will be developed over the next 5 years. Mr O'Neill told huge crowds at both districts he visited that the Gulf provincial government will receive K100 million over the next five years that is K200 million on top of the normal budget support it gets for education, health, law and order and all other government services.

Fisheries Boom

Around 18% of the world's total tuna stock is found in PNG's 2.5 million square kilometre Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The fishing industry has grown from a dependency on access fees in the early 1980s to a more diversified sector.

Bamboo Band

A bamboo Band from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville has recently amazed residents of the Australian capital of Canberra with the unique sound. Many of the residents could not resist the rhythm of the music. The band comprises residents living at Rainbow estate in Port Moresby. It was formed in 2005 and has been performing around the city as a cultural group.

Trade Talks

PNG has been coming out second betst in trade negotiations because it has not been taken seriously, officials are reported to have said during local debates in parliament two weeks ago, calling for the development an entity who can plan in advance for trade negotiations.

Bulolo Hydro Power

PNG Forest Products (PNGFP) has recently opened a 9.4MW Hydro Power Station in Bulolo, Morobe Province. The company initially built two power stations, the upper Baiune and the lower Baiune power stations during the pre-war days in the 1930s to supply power to the gold dredges that the company first embarked on. According to the company's history, a fire in 1984 totally destroyed the Upper Baiune power station and was rebuilt in 1985 while the lower Baiune station had been in operation ever since it was built.

Bougainville Mine

A landowner from the Panguna region in the autonomous Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville says a referendum would be needed before the green light is given to resume mining at Panguna.
The Bougainville government is holding the second of four planned community meetings to hear the people's views on whether the huge copper and gold mine can be re-opened.

PNG Fruit Wine

Winestar, an Eastern Highlands-based company, uses local produce and fruits such as ginger, tamarillo, strawberry, lemon and elderberry to manufacture mild fruit wines. Winestar a subsidiary of Nowek Ltd, a long-established company in the Highlands has launched a new product made from locally-grown produce and fruits at major supermarkets and stores around the country.

Elections Unacceptable

Transparency International PNG has found the 2012 elections "unacceptable" and questions whether the "will of the people was truly expressed".

TIPNG is a non-profit, non-government organisation dedicated to fighting corruption both internationally and at the national level.

Former Registrar Charged

The former PNG University of Technology (Unitech) registrar has been arrested and charged by Lae police over allegations of conspiracy and misappropriation. He is the third person to be charged following the arrest and charging of the university's former head of the electrical engineering department, Prof Narayan Ghelot, and bursar Jimmy Imbok last month.

LNG Project

The PNG LNG project operated by Esso Highlands Ltd was 75% complete at the end of last year and is on target for first LNG sales in 2014, Oil Search Ltd managing director Peter Botten said. He said much of the heavy construction on the process trains, tanks; flare and jetty at the LNG plant near Port Moresby were complete.
