Manam Resettlement

Displaced Manam Islanders in Madang province of Papua New Guinea say they are concerned about losing their culture and tradition, but have welcomed the government's renewed move to fast-track their permanent resettlement into the province's inland region.

Air Niugini Expansion Plans

Air Niugini plans to expand its fleet of 25 aircraft, including a mixed jet fleet of Boeing 737s, Boeing 767-300ERs and Fokker F-28s, as well as various Bombardier Dash-8 models. The carrier said in Nov-2012 that another six aircraft would be added in 2013 with the addition of two 737s, three Q400s and a Q300, taking the fleet to 31. These are presumably to be sourced from leasing companies or other airlines, as the carrier has no scheduled deliveries. Air Niugini also has a Boeing 787 on order for delivery in 2017.

Air Niugini Cebu Flights

From the 1st of April Air Niugini will be operating its B737 800 series aircraft on the Port Moresby - Cebu route. The schedule is

PX016 POM1500 - 1750CEB 738 1
PX017 CEB2210 - 0500+1POM 738 2

In addition, the 737-800 has entered service on following routes:
Port Moresby - Brisbane
Port Moresby - Sydney

On Port Moresby - Honiara - Nadi service, service operates with either 737-700 or -800.

Air Niugini has applied to the Philippines government to renew its permit to operate in the Philippines for another five years, according to a notice from the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB).

Treasurer Don Polye, the leader of THE Party, has stepped in and taken over the education portfolio while one of his party members concentrates on fighting criminal and graft charges brought against him by police. Ijivitari MP David Arore and Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology has been charged with criminal and graft charges brought against him Popondetta by police.

A manhunt is under way after 49 prisoners escaped from Beon jail in Madang. Convicted rapist and cult leader Stephen Tari, also known as Black Jesus, is among the escapees.

Hard-out for the Hungry

Kiwi kids are set to 'go hard-out for the hungry' in Papua New Guinea this year as part of World Vision's 40 Hour Famine. PNG has been chosen as the campaign's beneficiary because it has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world.

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has announced that Ok Tedi's lease would not be renewed upon its expiry next year and that the PNG government would own and operate the mine. It has also been reportedly announced the government would take control of the Papua New Guinea Sustainable Development Program (PNGSDP) set up by BHP in 2002.
