A PNG local employed by the Salvation Army has been accused of being a key assailant in the attack that resulted in the death of Iranian asylum seeker Reza Barati, according to staff employed at the Manus Island detention centre.

The PNG National Housing Corporation has announced it will build 40,000 new homes in Port Moresby to alleviate a massive housing shortage. But researchers say just building thousands of homes is not the answer, and until policies surrounding the release of state land are overhauled the problem will not be fixed.

Australia-based Origin Energy has reportedly decided not to proceed with its plans of a $5bn Purari River hydroelectric project in PNG. Industry analysts think that the company's decision was based on uncertainty around ownership structures.

Maternal Health
A $10 million maternal and child health initiative in Papua New Guinea (PNG), led by the UTS World Health Organization's Collaborating Centre for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Development (WHO CC) and funded by the Australian Government, is beginning a new phase this year. Maternal health services in PNG continue to be hard to access. Eighty seven per cent of the population live in rural or remote areas, amongst mountainous and rugged terrain.

Edie Creek Mine
Niuminco has restarted pilot mining at its Edie Creek mine in Papua New Guinea after receiving a 10 year renewal of mining lease ML 144. The company has also acquired a 100 per cent interest in Exploration Licence EL 1365 that adjoins to the north and west an Exploration Licence held by Morobe Mining Joint Venture, which in turn surrounds Niuminco's Edie Creek mining leases.

Vale Maria von Trapp
The last Von Trapp singer, who served as missionary in PNG, has died at 99. Maria Franziska von Trapp passed away after spending her life as a performer alongside her six siblings, and later as a lay-missionary with her step-mother in Papua New Guinea.

Papua New Guinea says it will provide PGK 50 million to help Fiji hold democratic elections later this year. PNG's officials have visited Fiji to discuss how the grant, announced by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill last year, will be used.

Court proceedings for Rabaul Shipping Company owner Captain Peter Sharp and others in the Kokopo district court have been set for the 20th of March. The case is in relation to the sinking of the passenger ferry MV Rabaul Queen in rough seas off Finschhafen on the second of Feb, 2012.

PNG Coffee
A World Bank report states that Papua New Guinea coffee is among the best in the world but that production continues to be declining. "PNG's coffee is achieving growing recognition internationally - with one of its growers last year bagging third place in a global taste competition. Yet PNG is not widely known as a coffee-producing nation, mainly because it is responsible for only around one percent of the world's coffee," the report said.

Koranga Mining Lease
Kibush Capital Corporation has announced the signing of a Joint Venture Agreement with the leaseholders of Mining Leases ML296-301 and ML278 located at Koranga, Wae, PNG. The leases cover approximately 26 hectares of Alluvial Resource and are located in an area that has been producing gold since 1920.

Tourism Growth
PNG received a major boost to its fast emerging tourism industry; figures recently released showed a healthy 35 percent increase in visitor arrivals from the U.K. An expansion in both international and domestic aviation is ensuring easier access. Air Niugini, the National Carrier, has regular services from Singapore, Hong Kong and other Asian and Australasian hubs.

LNG Project
According to PNG Treasury Minister, Don Polye, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) will drive growth in PNG this year with the ExxonMobil-led PNG-LNG Project on track to begin exporting in the second half of 2014. The PNG Sovereign Wealth Fund will be the sole beneficiary of the government's natural resource windfall.

The Bank South Pacific Group has posted a net profit of K436.8 million for 2013. The consolidated operating profit for 2013 before tax was K607 million, up 11.3 per cent from an operating profit of K543.3 million in 2012.
