Social Media Clampdown

The government has launched a clampdown on the country's rampantly critical social media. National Information and Communication Technology Authority chief executive Charles Punaha said that under cyber-crime legislation now before the cabinet, it will become an offence for people to use pen-names rather than their real names when posting on social media.

Rebels Border Threat

There is a build-up of OPM rebels on the Papua New Guinea-Indonesia border, says an intelligence official currently on the ground. The increasing presence of members of the Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM) coincides with PNG lodging an official protest note with the Indonesian government over developments on the border.

Road Safety

Road Safety Council inspectors have been told to become "traffic lights and signboard" for drivers. Insp Paul Unapite from the Bomana Police College told 34 road inspectors after a two-week workshop on traffic laws that while they did not have arresting and prosecuting powers, they knew the basic laws to perform their duties.

Asian Club Volleyball

China has crushed Papua New Guinea in the elimination round of the 2014 Asian Club Men's Volleyball in straight sets, 25-12, 25-17, 25-20, at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City, Philippines.

Lae Solar Lamps

The city of Lae will soon be able to boast several solar street lamps courtesy of the Taiwanese government. Twenty will be installed in the Lae urban local level government. Twenty will be used in the Ahi Local Level Government from which six will be set up at Bumbu settlement.

Female Pilots

Four specially selected young women from PNG are embarking on the opportunity of a lifetime - training to become commercial pilots. The women start a 68-week course today to secure a New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority Commercial Pilot Licence and Multi-engine Instrument Rating at Nelson Aviation College (NAC), Nelson.

Police Modernisation

The police modernisation programme has been launched in Southern Highlands with the delivery of six new vehicles. Under the programme, new police houses, manpower and logistics will be increased nationwide to cope with the demand for efficient police services.

Solomons Floods

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has announced that PNG will commit K1 million to assist the flood devastated victims of Solomon Islands. Mr O'Neill said the donation would be for relief assistance towards resettlement, infrastructure repair and other efforts for those affected by the flash flooding.

Earthquakes

There seem to be more than the usual number of earthquakes being reported for the whole of PMG. A big one has hit Buin. A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck on the 11th of April and a 7.5 magnitude earthquakes shook again on the 13th. Buin district administrator John Itanu and ABG Minister for Community Development Melchior Dare have led government teams to the affected areas to assess the damage.

LNG Export

U.S. oil and gas giant ExxonMobil Corporation has announced that its long delayed PNG liquefied natural gas (LNG) project will start exporting LNG by mid-2014. The project, which has been under construction for the past five years, was continuously delayed due to record wet weather, steep terrain and community issues. These resulted in slowing down of the work and escalated the costs by about 25% from its original budget.

New Zealand is working with large food producers in the country to help expand the market for locally grown food. One part of this is the just announced multi-million dollar support for a redevelopment of the Gordon's Market in Port Moresby.

Teachers Off Payroll

Dr Michael Tapo, the Education Secretary, has confirmed that 5,831 teachers will be put off the payroll starting this month because they failed to fill the resumption of duty sheets.

National Volunteer Service

A government organisation has made a public appeal to business houses and corporate organisations to support them fund a mid-service conference in May. The National Volunteer Service (NVS) has taken a brave initiative formed a committee to seek fund at a cost of K146,000 to host a volunteer conference in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.

Safer Markets

The Port Moresby Safe City Programme started in 2011, with the support of the Government of Spain. The programme is funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It is part of UN Women's Safe Cities Global Initiative , which works with local governments and civic leaders in 17 cities and seeks to make urban spaces safer for women and girls.

Manus Hell

A security guard at the Manus Island detention centre says detainees are being forced to endure "hell on Earth". The Australian officer, who did not want to be named, said the offshore processing centre at Papua New Guinea was a "horrendous chicken pen" where guards are regularly forced to cut down detainees trying to hang themselves.

Company Buys Fiji Insurer

Capital Insurance Group from PNG has announced its acquisition of Fiji's insurer Dominion Insurance Ltd. The sale is subject to normal regulatory approvals and is expected to be finalised at the end of this month.

Vale Sir Colman O'Loghlen

Sir Colman Michael O'Loghlen, World War Two veteran, baronet and a justice of the National Court of Papua New Guinea, has died peacefully at the age of 97 in Brisbane.

Death Penalty

The National Executive Council has given the green light for work to proceed in establishing necessary policies to enable the implementation of the death penalty through. The death chamber will be set up within the new maximum security prison which will be built at Bomana, on the outskirts of Port Moresby. The justice minister, Kerenga Kua, says the government will have the final say on which execution method will be used - lethal injection, firing squad, deprivation of oxygen, hanging, or electrocution.

The Papua New Guinea Binatangs continued their unstoppable run at the AFL South Pacific Cup in Coffs Harbour, thumping Oceania 83-14, with Katah Siwee and Cyril Baki both landing four goals each.
