PNG Military Aviation

The Defence Forces Air Transport Wing (ATW) will buy four PAC 750 (Paciifc Aerospace) short landing and take-off aeroplanes suitable for rural airstrips. The aircraft will be inspected by the PNG Defence Force in New Zealand in Wellington.

In a recent interview, ATW's Director of Air Operations, Colonel Ron Hosea says in order to match the administrative instructions to increase manpower in the force, they would need at least a squadron of planes on roster.

Air Niugini Airfares

Air Niugini will be reducing its airfares for the second time this year on both domestic and international sectors, effective 1st March, 2015. Chief Executive Officer, Simon Foo said the further reduction in airfares is due to the continuous drop in crude oil prices on the world market, allowing the fuel surcharge to be further reduced.

Twin Tower Joint Venture

The Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea and IPBC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop prime real estate in the Central Business District (CBD) of Port Moresby.

The MOU is the first step towards the landmark development. It was signed for and on behalf of the IPBC by Managing Director Wasantha Kumarasiri and Mr Erastus Kamburi, Chief Legal Officer, IPBC; and for and on behalf of the Anglican Church of PNG by Archbishop Clyde Igara and Mr John Francis Kaupa, Member of the Provincial Board of Trustees.

Breastfeeding is an important reason why early childhood mortality in PNG is not higher than it was before. Susu Mama PNG supports the government initiative of encouraging mothers to give exclusive breastfeeding to their children during their first six months.

Moresby School Condemned

Classes at Butuka Elementary in the Moresby South Electorate of Port Moresby have has to be suspended following a notice from National Capital District Commission Health, condemning the elementary school for not having proper toilets and classrooms.

The school has been forced to construct a pit toilet, as a temporary relief measure.

Oil Search Profit

Oil Search Limited (OSL) has announced a record profit for the year 2014. The company announced a Net Profit After Tax (NPAT) of US$353.2 million, around K880 million.

PNG Languages

EM TV reports - there is not enough effort by the government to protect Papua New Guinean languages from becoming extinct. Out of 800 languages (in Papua New Guinea), half of that number has less than 2,000 speakers; that means half of our languages are threatened.

Rotokas Language

Which language or group of languages has the shortest alphabet? - Rotokas from the North Solomons. This is in fact the shortest of all languages in the world with 11 letters. These 11 are made up of 5 vowels and 6 consonants: A, E, I, O, U, B, G, K, P, R, T. It is spoken by about 4300 people.

The Funeral Service for Dennis Gray, was held on, Mon. 23 Feb. at 1300 Hrs, at the, Chapel of the Great Northern Garden of Remembrance, 31 - 35 Tallowood Drive, Deception Bay, in Queensland.

Kondra Suspended

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Boka Kondra has been suspended by the Leadership Tribunal. Kondra, the Member for North Fly, received a letter from the Leadership Tribunal notifying him of his suspension.

Powes Parkop, the Governor of the National Capital says his administration will establish a fleet of boats to monitor the seas around Port Moresby and intercept betel nut smugglers.

Pacific Games Baton

The 2015 Pacific Games Baton has recently been revealed at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Port Moresby. The baton, designed and created by well renowned Papua New Guinean artist, Gickmai Kundun, is symbolic of Papua New Guinea's rich and diverse cultural heritage.

Games Security Warning

A security warning will be issued to all Fijian teams on arrival in PNG. Pacific Games Council President Vidya Lakhan says from our perspective, security will not be an issue if you follow the instructions of the organizing committee.

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill is confident that the country will deliver "world class" facilities when the Pacific Games is held in Port Moresby in July.

Barrick Selling Mines

Barrick Gold Corp will be selling off two of its mines. One in Australia (Cowal) and one in Papua New Guinea (Porgera) to aid plans of generating cash that will help trim down some of its debt by $3 billion.

Vaki Pleads Not Guilty

Police Commissioner Geoffrey Vaki has appeared in court charged with contempt in relation to a warrant issued for the arrest of Prime Minister Peter O'Neill last year. Vaki through his lawyer John Griffin QC pleaded not guilty to the contempt charges before Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia in the National Court in Waigani.

Papua New Guinea has been given a corruption score of 25/100, where 100 indicates clean governance, in comparison to the world average of 43/100, by Transparency International.

National ID Project

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has officially launched the Papua New Guinea national identity (PNGNID) project that he said will be of great assistance in planning and delivering government services. Mr O'Neill highlighted the importance of the program across the country from the largest cities to the most remote villages.

Nigerian Deported

A Nigerian believed to be living illegally in the country and married to a local woman has been deported. Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration Rimbink Pato announced the deportation of a serial unlawful entrant to the country and suspected organized crime fugitive Mr Cedric Sedibe Nduduzie.

Child Protection Legislation

The government is amending its child protection legislation to give courts the ability to take a child away from its family.

Local reports say the Youth Minister Delilah Gore has said the change would allow children to be placed in foster care and hold parents accountable for their neglect.

The report says this about PNG - "There were further reports of violence against women and children, including as a result of sorcery accusations. Reports of unnecessary and excessive use of force by police persisted. There were reports of violence and sexual assault by police during a forced eviction near Porgera mine".

WASH Policy

The National Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Policy for 2015 - 2030 has bene launched by the National Planning and Monitoring Minister, Charles Abel. The policy focusses on service delivery of good drinking water, sanitation and the long term hygiene or behaviour that is able to bring change to the country.
