In most other places, other than PNG, this sort of thinking has long gone -- "The court considered that the girl was partly to blame for the offence" and when you consider the age of the girl how could you blame her even in PNG? I think the court is out of touch with reality.

Volcano Awakens

There are reports children have been injured, and homes and crops destroyed, following a volcanic eruption on Manam Island in Madang province. Scores of houses, food gardens and water sources were also destroyed, while two of the three schools, Boisa Elementary and Baliau Elementary has been shut down indefinitely.

Dramatic satellite footage has emerged of the Manam Island volcano erupting. The 1,807-meter high volcano produced a major eruption in 2004, killing five people and displacing thousands. The island was evacuated after that eruption, but many residents have since returned to the island.

Authorities in PNG have detained a foreign vessel allegedly crewed by forced labourers on the international border with Australia in the Torres Strait. Six Cambodians were among the eight trafficked fishermen rescued from the Thai-owned cargo ship.

Cricketing is developing rapidly in PNG. PNG's senior men's team attracted many eyeballs from all over the world after their recent good showing at the international circuit. Anglican Remote Chaplaincy - Pivo

An Anglican chapel dedicated to Saint Francis will shortly be dedicated in the village of Pivo - one of the most remote villages served by the Anglican Communion. And the diocese of Port Moresby in the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea, is also building an elementary school and an education centre providing adult literacy skills.

The Anglican Church of PNG has been sending members of the Melanesian Brotherhood to this community for the past two decades.

HOPE Helps Nurses

Project HOPE staff member Kenly Flanigan and HOPE volunteer nurse Kim Kancir have helped lead a workshop on updated CPR techniques. Many of the nurses at the hospital hadn't renewed their CPR certification in many years. So the information they were receiving was brand new. Kim and Kenly worked as a team to instruct everyone on infant and adult CPR.

Is PNG Broke?

Is PNG broke? Is it on the verge of a Greek style fiscal crisis?

The projected budget deficit has been revised up, hitting 9.4 per cent, which is more than double last year's deficit and getting close to the 12.3 per cent figure which helped tip Greece into meltdown last year.

PNG Power Broke

Public enterprises minister, Ben Micah, says the country's electricity provider, PNG Power, is broke and in deep cash flow shortage. Mr Micah says that last year, PNG Power had an overdrawn bank account of 14 million US dollars, and has only managed to recoup 6.5 million from outstanding power bills and other costs.

In West New Britain the work of Red Cross volunteers has been particularly important since severe storms linked to tropical cyclone Pam swept through the province four months ago, leaving many people in need of humanitarian support.

Biogas Plant

The engineering and design work has been concluded for Clean Energy Solutions Pacific's 2-MW biogas power plant in PNG. California-based Viaspace was awarded the job in May. It was in charge of the design of the biogas facility and its grass receiving areas, storage, fuel feeding, primary and secondary anaerobic digesters and generators, among others.

Aid Money Wasted

Australian aid money to PNG is being wasted on "middlemen", such as lawyers and consultants, Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says. "As a developing country we don't want handouts, we don't want Australian taxpayer money wasted and we don't want boomerang aid," he said.
