Disaster Boss Kidnapped

The Madang Disaster Director, Rudolph Mongalee, was held captive overnight before being released the following day. He said his kidnappers asked him why his Department is giving too much attention to the Manam Islanders, and not everyone else.

Air Niugini

Air Niugini has scored well at Airline Ratings. The airline scored 5/7 in the safety rankings and an impressive 6/7 in the product rankings. For its First Class product category, the review highlighted Air Niugini's "Superior meal/snack service with beverages". PNG Air and Travel Air do not feature in the reviews.

El Niño Effect

During 2015, much of rural PNG has been harshly impacted by a severe drought and, at a number of very high altitude locations, by repeated frosts. The impact is similar, but not identical, to that of the major 1997 drought and frosts. The El Niño associated drought had a major impact on water supply in very many parts of PNG.

Ok Tedi Law Suit

Sir Mekere Morauta has begun legal proceedings, in the Supreme Court of Papua New Guinea, seeking to have the Ok Tedi Tenth Supplemental Agreement Act 2013 declared unconstitutional and invalid. Sir Mekere has brought the case as a private citizen because he believes there are serious Constitutional flaws in the Act, and that it is harsh, oppressive and unjust.

Mining Boom Bust

The PNG government has finally admitted that PNG's revenue surge has ended. As long as PNG's mining boom lasted, Prime Minister Peter O'Neill could build parliamentary support by allocating constituency funds to each Member of Parliament's (MP) district.

Tourism Funding

PNG's tourism ministry will spend 1.5 million US dollars promoting tourism to Milne Bay and East New Britain provinces. The new tourism minister, Justin Tkatchenko, says PNG needs to look at its own backyard first and make tourism more viable before promoting it on the world stage.

Anglican Archbishop Visits Norwich

The Anglican Archbishop of PNG, Clyde Igara, was reunited with ten pilgrims from the Diocese of Norwich during his recent visit to the United Kingdom to attend the Primates meeting organised by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Port Moresby Stock Exchange has been advised by Total E&P PNG Limited, operator of Petroleum Retention License 15 in the Gulf province that the second planned extended well test has commenced at Antelope-5.

UB 40 Visits POM

The popular British reggae band UB40 visited PNG recently with the lead singer Ali Campbell, Singer Astro and keyboardist Mick performing for two nights in Port Moresby. This trip is UB40's second trip to the country after their performance in 2014 at the Lamana Gold Club.

Power Transmission Line Inspection

PNG Power Ltd (PPL) is conducting an Airborne Integrity Inspection of all transmission lines apparatus within the city's power grid. PPL has engaged Aeropower, an Australian based company to conduct the line integrity inspection.

Aviation Smuggling Concern

An increase in aviation smuggling of contraband items has law enforcement agencies concerned. Airport Police Station Commander, Robert Wane, warned the public not to involve themselves in such activities. Commander Wane said airport police will tighten measures after seeing the rise in smuggling of marijuana, betel nut and mustard.

Divine Word Uni Vice-Chancellor

Prof Cecilia Nembou has made history by becoming the first female Vice-Chancellor of a university in Papua New Guinea. Nembou takes over at Divine Word Uni from foundation president and Vice-Chancellor Fr Jan Czuba whose term expired after leading the institution from the start in 1996 when it transited from the former Divine Word Institute into a university.

Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, has received an award in recognition of his contribution to the management of Papua New Guinea's economy, and towards the advancement of higher education in the nation.

Electoral Commission Awareness

The elections are just around the corner so the PNG Electoral Commission has been invited to Port Moresby Grammar School in the National Capital District to give an awareness teaching staff of the School on Electoral Rolls and Enrolment of Voters in Preparation for the 2017 National Elections.

Judge Cautions Lawyers

Acting Judge Salee Koeget has cautioned lawyers at the National Court to correctly interpret laws and advise their clients on their legal positions. His Honour said laws must be interpreted and applied according to the facts of the case, and lawyers must explain clearly to their clients, the legality of their cases.

PMV Problems

Traffic authorities in Port Moresby impound about 500 vehicles per year, according to a Traffic Inspector employed with the Central Provincial Transport Authority. Traffic Officer Mr. Kirip says private motor vehicles, PMVs, engaged in the business of charging fees for public transport, usually account for the bulk of impounded vehicles.

New Pilots

Four young Central Province ladies have graduated with a Diploma in Aviation after a successful 20 months training at the Nelson Aviation College in New Zealand.

They are

Police Recruits Financial Training

Over 270 recruits at the Bomana Police Training College have completed a Westpac Bank financial training workshop. The college management believes the workshop will train recruits, to make economic decisions when they pass out from Bomana. The training covered a range of basic knowledge on savings, budgeting and spending.

Off Season Rugby League

Ninety-two teams have registered with the Bomana off Season rugby league competition, which has kicked-off in the Moresby North east electorate. These teams are competing in the A and B grade divisions.

Security Guard Permit

From the 5th of February all Security Guards will have to have a permit entitling them to work. Penalties will be charged against private security companies employing unpermitted or untrained security guards after this date.

Kokopo Fire Station

At the Kokopo Fire Station the only equipment that is operational is a die-cast Rhino model fire engine, given to the Kokopo fire brigade by the PNG Fire Service in 2008.
