ANZAC Day has come and gone.

The "Ode of Remembrance" is an ode taken from Laurence Binyon's poem, "For the Fallen", which was first published in The Times in September 1914.

Sport Venue Upgrades

Work has begun on upgrading the training venues for the FIFA Under 20 Women's Football World Cup in PNG. The 17 training venues will be at Bisini, Sir John Guise, Murray Barracks, University of Papua New Guinea, Institute of Public Administration, Gerehu Secondary School, Gordons Secondary School, Port Moresby National High School and Port Moresby International School.

The tournament will kick off in November


Currency Shortage

A shortage of foreign currency is affecting all businesses in the country. Puma Energy, a major importer of crude oil, says it has been badly affected by the current shortage of foreign currency in the country.


Look Into Inquiry

The Police Commissioner Gari Baki's decision to set up an inquiry into the affairs of the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate may be subjudice, National Court Judge Justice Colin Makail said. Justice Makail said this while presiding over a court proceeding between Internal Taskforce Sweep Director Sam Koim, Prime Minister O'Neill, Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, Attorney-General Ano Pala and the State.


Oro Rice

Six tons of Oro rice have left the shores of Northern Province and shipped to Trukai Industries in Lae, Morobe Province, to be on the shelves in shops. Another 18 tons are packed and will depart the Oro wharf in the coming months.


Fraud Squad Office Closed

Police loyal to Commissioner Baki have locked down the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate office with chains.

New Stop N Shop

City Pharmacy Limited (CPL) has entered into a long-term lease agreement with the East New Britain Development Corporation. This was announced by CPL Chief Executive Officer, Ravi Singh, at the opening of Stop N Shop Koki, in Port Moresby.


Harmony Gold Mining Report

South African-based Harmony Gold Mining Company has reported "continuing exploration success" at its 100 per cent-held Kili Teke prospect in the Hela.


PX Cadet Program

The cadet programs for pilots and aircraft maintenance engineers have been a significant achievement for Air Niugini, the national flag carrier. Board Chairman, Sir Frederick Reiher, says the cadet programs are part of a training series that Air Niugini has invested in to train locals on the job.


Tapo Faces Corruption Charges

FORMER Education secretary Dr Michael Tapo is facing charges of official corruption, misappropriation and abuse of office in relation to a K1.2 million paid to a construction firm.


PX Maintain Services

Although half of the domestic routes Air Niugini flies to are unprofitable the Board Chairman, Sir Frederick Reiher, says Air Niugini, and its subsidiary Link PNG will maintain its services in flying to these locations.

Air Niugini's ability to do business is hampered by the fact that many airports do not support night time flights so the fleet can only operate during daylight hours.


Water Supply Cut

The water supply to Buimo Prison and the police barracks at Bumbu and Tent City in Lae have been disconnected because of outstanding rates totalling K4.5 million, Water PNG says.


Anglicare Drop-in Centre

Anglicare Drop-in Centre, in Waigani Port Moresby, has recently received cash and kind donations from international marketing company, JM Ocean Avenue. Anglicare Foundation says the donation will keep the Drop-in Centre open for the year.


Court win for Dame Carol

Former politician Dame Carol Kidu has won an 11th-hour legal battle to keep footage relating to her involvement with a controversial Port Moresby development from being screened at an international film festival.


Refugee Arrested

An Iraqi refugee has been arrested for trying to break back into the guarded transit centre on Manus Island after deciding he could not cope with freedom in one of PNG's biggest cities. Three refugees who have left Manus Island to try and rebuild their lives in Lae after being granted refugee status have returned to the island, saying they feel safer in the transit centre.

Lae BSP Improves Services

Lae's Bank South Pacific (BSP) has developed a more customer friendly environment with the inclusion of new seats. The new set-up will also cut down on the waiting time for customers and will help them serve customers effectively. The original set up of this office was very small. It did not have enough space for customers.


Samarai Murua By-election

Due to a delay in election materials arriving in Alotau polling for the vacant Samarai-Murua seat has now been rescheduled to Monday the 23rd of April. A total of 12 candidates have nominated to contest the by-election.


Corruption and Chaos

Backstabbing, factionalism, and dramatic abuses of power have led the battle against corruption in PNG to take on Shakespearean proportions, as the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate (NFACD) locks horns with high profile government figures, including the attorney general and Prime Minister Peter O'Neill.

War Trophies or Curios

PNG's High Commissioner to Australia says a collection of artefacts collected during the Australian military occupation of Papua New Guinea between 1914 and 1921 represents a significant link between the neighbours.


Zika Virus

Retrospective testing for Zika virus of samples taken from patients presenting with a febrile illness between July 2014 and March 2016 in PNG reveal local transmission of the virus, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report.


PNG Golf

Peter Martin and Lindsay Wilson lead in PNG following the morning field of the second round. Starting the day on 4-under the card and two shots off the lead, Wilson found his rhythm on the back-9 to finish his round on 3-under 69.

It's a slow reveal in first light after an all-night passage along Papua New Guinea's north coast. Yesterday from our anchorage at Bagabag Island, we flew up the slopes of the dormant volcano on Kar Kar Island, blanketed in plantation sorghum and coconut, and did a lap around its forested caldera. Could it get more exciting? Yes, it can.

UniTech Safety Concerns

Following an armed hold up in the early hours of the morning at UniTech students have conducted a forum with the school administration to address the issue of Safety and security of students while on campus.


Human Rights Review

A critical report by the United Nations Human Rights Council of PNG's controversial Special Agricultural and Business Leases, or SABLs, will feature in the country's human rights review next month.


The SABL scheme resulted in over five million hectares of land being unlawfully taken from the rural indigenous people and given to foreign corporations, largely for logging operations.

Baki to Explain

The National Court in Port Moresby has directed Police Commissioner, Gari Baki, to explain his intentions behind "legal concerns" he included as Terms of Reference (TOR) when he issued directions to investigate the actions of the Fraud squad.
