Justice Davani's Funeral

A funeral service has been held for the late Justice Catherine Davani at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Port Moresby. Paying tribute, Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia described Justice Davani as a dedicated judge who served with distinction and honour in both National and Supreme Court jurisdictions.

Miss PNG 2016

Kellyanne Limbiye - a University of PNG student has been crowned Miss PNG (2016). 23 year old Limbiye, a final-year political science student, was also judged winner of the sarong wear and talent categories.

First runner-up was Miss Queen Emma Chocolates Lois Doules Ilave, second runner-up was Miss International Training Institute (ITI) Rose Lakoro Pitoi and the third runner-up Miss Pacific Balanced Fund (PBF), Melody Leke.

Calls have been made to review the 2001 Milne Bay Tourism Bureau Act. Board member of Milne Bay Tourism Bureau, Samuel Auboti, told EMTV News, the review is a must for small people to benefit in the Tourism Sector of the province.

Acting Speaker Dies

Acting speaker of PNG's Parliament, South Fly MP Aide Ganasi, has died of a heart attack. Parliament was suspended because of Mr Ganasi's death. He was a member of Prime Minister Peter O'Neill's People's National Congress party. The late MP was a PNGDF officer cadet in 1981 after enlisting with the army and was a mechanic by profession.

PNG Air ATR72 Options

PNG Air has firmed up options for five additional ATR72-600s with Avions de Transport Régional (Toulouse Blagnac). The aircraft are part of an order for up to twenty of the type signed in 2014 which entailed six firm orders with fourteen options.

Fiji 7s Team Get Wakeup Call

Olympic gold medallists Vodafone Fiji 7s team received a major wakeup call in the last hour in their second pool game against PNG in the Oceania 7s Tournament. Fiji beat PNG 31-12 however PNG was leading Fiji 12-5 at halftime.

PNG Aid From Aust

An Australian Labor senator, Alex Gallacher, has called for a rethink of Australian aid to PNG, arguing it's not being well spent. Senator Gallacher said there was difficulty in getting aid dollars where they were needed in PNG.

PNG to Probe Disappearance

The government of PNG has pledged to look into the disappearance of 16 Indonesian nationals who entered the neighbouring country during 2014 and 2015, an official said. The whereabouts of the 16 Indonesian citizens from Merauke district in Papua province are still unknown.

Election Fees Hike

A watchdog group in PNG is opposing government plans for a ten-fold increase in the fee that prospective MPs need to pay. Recently the government announced it would increase the nomination charge for people wanting to run in the national election from $US310 to $US3,100.

Vale Sir Angmai Bilas

Sir Angmai Bilas, one of the first members of the House of Assembly from Madang has passed away. Sir Angmai was minister for public utilities (now State Enterprises) and signed the underwater telecommunication cable project in Vancouver, Canada. He also allowed Jant Timber Company to develop the multimillion timber project in Transgogol.

Operation Open Heart Training

Three staff members from the Port Moresby General Hospital are thankful to the Operation Open Heart (OOH) Foundation for funding three months of further training in India. Two nurses, Sister Noelyn Wangi and Sister Jean Boie will undergo cardiothoracic nursing training while Perfusionist and Anaesthetic Technician, Norman Kambo will undergo paediatric perfusionist training.

Lae Police Apprehend Suspects

Police in Lae have shot and killed a suspect while two of his accomplices are nursing gunshot wounds to the leg at the Accidents and Emergency unit of Angau hospital. Police believe they are members of an organized gang that have been carrying out robberies in the city.

Australian Federal Police Donation

The Australian Federal Police based in Lae have donated a reconditioned 15-seater bus to Lae police in response to the command's need of a vehicle in transporting police prosecutors to and from the court house.

Murder Suspect Caught

Lae Police have caught one of the prime suspects involved in the murder of Dr. Alphonse Rongap in June this year. The suspect, Matthew David, was caught by Madang police at Yagaum in Madang province. Lae Metropolitan Commander, Chief Superintendent, Anthony Wagambie, said Lae police sent information to Madang police following a tip off which resulted in the arrest.

Dual Citizenship Bill

The PNG Parliament has passed the Dual Citizenship Bill which will allow people with connections and interests in Papua New Guinea to hold two passports, or dual citizenship. The Bill reflects Papua New Guinea's changing circumstances in an increasingly globalised world, and the need for Papua New Guineans to be part of the global community and for non-Papua New Guineans to be a part of the changing phases in the development of this country, granting to all these people the privilege of holding dual citizenship.

Sports Hall of Fame

The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) has announced that five "legendary athletes" will be inducted into the PNG Sports Hall of Fame later this month. Names of the five athletes have not been revealed as of yet, but it has been confirmed they come from the sports of athletics, boxing, swimming and weightlifting.
