Completing a Master's degree at James Cook University has given PNG dentist Hilda Audubo a new passion to tackle some of her country's health issues. Together with a friend, Dr Audubo has founded a non-government organisation, the Wantok Health Foundation.

Economic Mismanagement
Opposition leader, Don Polye, says the country's tight fiscal situation has been worsened because its revenues are tied up with repaying cumbersome debt. He said the government was irresponsible in taking out a US$1 billion loan with Swiss bank UBS in 2014 which Mr Polye claimed breached the official debt ceiling.

Fun Run Auctions
The auction of Fun Run T-Shirts has raised over K500,000. At the Lae Yacht Club, 24 local organisations participated, buying a total of 21,405 Fun Run t-shirts for 80 schools in Morobe, breaking last year's mark of 17,000 t-shirts sold. Business houses in the nation's capital raised K312,000 from the sale of 31,200 t-shirts.

Longboard Tour

Mining Ombudsman 'Last Hope'
A human rights group in Papua New Guinea says it would be a great relief if Canada agrees to appoint an ombudsman to monitor PNG's mining sector. The Akali Tange Association has written to Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, as part of a wider global campaign calling for the appointment.

Wisil Breaks Personal Record
Toea Wisil has broken her own 200m national record for the second time this season in a high quality race recently held in Canberra, Australia. Wisil came agonisingly close to the World Championship Qualifying time of 23.10 as she led the field for 150m before being overhauled by Australia's Rio Olympic semi-finalist, Ella Nelson, who won the race in 23.00.

Lack of Anti Venom
A week-long training program on snake bites in Port Moresby has revealed that PNG currently has only 250 to 300 vials of anti-venom to treat all snakebite cases country-wide. This means for the country's entire population of over 8 million people, there is only 20 per cent of the entire anti-venom needed to treat snakebite victims.

Gas Project
The PNG liquefied natural gas (LNG) project is the largest resource extraction project in the Asia-Pacific region. Constructed at a stated cost of US$19 billion, it's operated by ExxonMobil in joint venture with Oil Search and four other partners. The project extracts natural gas from the highlands where it is processed before being sent via some 700km of pipeline to a plant near the nation's capital, Port Moresby. The gas is then liquefied and transferred into ships for sale overseas.

The Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop, has launched a project to pilot new solar powered rice milling technology in Lae, Morobe province. The project builds on the long running partnership between NARI, Papua New Guinea's hub for agricultural research since its inception in 1996, and the Australian Government.

The Australian High Commission has congratulated the 321 Papua New Guinea institute of Public Administration (PNGIPA) students who graduated recently. Whistle-blower Traumatised
An Australian Federal Police (AFP) agent is claiming AUD $10.3 million in damages from the organisation for allegedly seeking reprisal against him after he became a whistle-blower about wrongdoing while he was deployed with the AFP in Lae, PNG in 2013-14.

Kerema Coronation School
The Kerema Coronation Secondary School has hosted a corporate dinner in Port Moresby to raise funds for a new science laboratory. The dinner aimed to raise K800,000. The school has a total of 663 students and the school wants to ensure that those taking Chemistry, Physics and Biology subjects have access to the practical aspects of their education.

Mt Hagen Revenge
Seven men have been shot, three of them dead, while four are fighting for their lives from gunshot wounds in a recent incident in Mt Hagen. Police reported that the killing was a revenge attack by maternal uncles of a young man from the Dani tribe who was killed by Mannga tribesmen in February.

Detention Centre Closed
Chief Justice, Sir Salamo Injia, has found the Manus Island detention centre has been closed, despite the fact that roughly 860 men remain in it. The 860 men inside the centre have not actually moved from their existing compounds, but have been told they are now living on the naval base. "The Government of Papua New Guinea complied with the court order and closed the Manus Island Regional Processing Centre (MIRPC)," he said.

Air Niugini
The Supreme Court has adjourned an attempt by a group of former Air Niugini pilots to review a previous court decision concerning their sacking. The pilots were terminated last year after taking part in a political protest against the Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill. The pilots have gone to court to challenge a previous court decision to refuse a review of the legality of their dismissal.
