Aussie Firms in PNG

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says almost 5000 Australian businesses and companies are operating in PNG. He said during a business breakfast in Port Moresby yesterday the two-way trade between the two countries was valued at A$5.8 billion (K13.7 billion).

Water Police Under-resourced

Royal PNG Constabulary (RPNG) water police are in dire need of resources and manpower to patrol and monitor strategic areas in the country, officer in charge of water police David Kela says. He said during a recent workshop in East New Britain that water police earlier had five boats allocated to Vanimo, Madang, Lae, Kimbe and Alotau but only two of those were operational at the moment.

Police Commissioner, Gari Baki, says the police force is looking at building a new police station for Lae. The current station is one of the oldest in the country.

Gerehu Level 5 Hospital

The Health Minister has revealed the government's plans to build a new hospital in Gerehu to cater for the suburb's growing population. He said it would be built to level 5 hospital standards, meaning more specialists and equipment to meet the growing demand from Port Moresby's population.

Refugees Don't Want PNG

Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, says refugees currently on Manus Island prefer to be resettled elsewhere to PNG. O'Neill made this comment during a joint media conference in Port Moresby with his Australia counterpart Malcolm Turnbull.

Meanwhile, the Manus Island detention centre will be closed before Halloween but the Australian Federal Government plans to keep the Nauru immigration detention facility open indefinitely as an enduring deterrent to people smugglers.

Lae Public Transport

At least 120 Public Motor Vehicle buses have been impounded in Lae as they were not roadworthy. Lae Metropolitan Commander Chief Superintend, Anthony Wagambie, says there are too many un-roadworthy buses driven around the city which are putting passengers and commuters lives at risk.

Solar for New Ireland

A deal for New Ireland to import the most advanced technology in electronics, space and solar systems in a joint-venture contract agreement has been reached with a large state-owned Chinese Enterprise.

The contract, worth nearly K25 million, was signed between CETC International Company Limited and New Ireland Development Corporation, the business arm of the New Ireland Provincial Government.

Manus Tension

About 60 asylum seekers on Manus and guards have come to blows in a running battle as the governments of PNG and Australia meet in Port Moresby to discuss refugee resettlement. The riot, sparked by poor food quality, followed another fight last month when barriers were erected around kitchens, slowing the serving of meals.

PNG holds the record of being the most linguistically diverse country on the planet. On the map created by the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh's Kazimierz J. Vale Josepha Kiris

One of Papua New Guinea's most respected women leaders, Josepha Kiris, who many people knew as Josepha Kanawi, died last week. Ms Kiris, a former Secretary of the PNG Law Reform Commission, was a driving force behind the criminalisation of wife beating and a constant voice urging the PNG government to acknowledge the skills and experience of senior female public servants by elevating them to executive roles in national agencies.

Police Given Human Rights Training

Twenty-four police officers, including six women taking part in a four day human rights training workshop in Goroka. The participants from nine districts in the Eastern Highlands province were encouraged to respect human rights in their personal as well as professional lives, and reminded that human rights starts at home.

Eastern Highlands University City

Plans are underway for the University of Goroka (UOG) to establish a proposed university city. UOG is committed to building a university city over the next 20 years. UOG Chancellor Joseph Sukwianomb explained that the city will provide for an alternative environment for a university to grow.

Self-government

Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare has been taken back to the house at Konedobu, where all the planning and meeting took place in preparation for Independence. There, he was given a final walk to the "cabinet room" where a handful of elite Papua New Guineans then sat, brainstormed ideas and pushed for Independence.

Biggest Moresby Family

Imagine having 37 children. That is the number of children in Colin Pake's home. But, only two are his own, the other 35 are the unfortunate and under privilege children that Pake and wife accommodates. Based at Gerehu stage 4, Port Moresby, the couple aim to provide basic human necessities such as food and nutrition for healthy bodies, clean water and access to medicine, shelter and love and education.
