Southern Cross University Graduation

15 students have graduated with Southern Cross University degrees, offered under the Institute of Business Studies University, Eriama Campus outside Port Moresby. This is the first graduation for the Southern Cross University to be hosted in Port Moresby.

Captain Granger Narara

High achieving pilot, Captain Granger Narara from Dobu in Milne Bay province, will be the guest speaker at this year's prestigious Men of Honour Awards (MOHA), on the 29th of April, in Port Moresby. Narara is currently a senior examiner on the Airbus Fleet with Etihad Airways.

"I have also held positions of Chief Pilot with Emirates, Vice President Operations with Etihad Airways and Chief Operating Officer with Air Seychelles. I have voluntarily gone back to flying as I wanted to fly until retirement, so I now just fly and instruct on the Airbus A330 and A340 with Etihad" said the captain.

Aussie Governor General

The Australian Governor General has led Anzac Day commemorations in PNG at the Bomana War Cemetery near Port Moresby to mark the 75th anniversaries of Kokoda and the Battle of Milne Bay. Sir Peter and Lady Cosgrove also attended commemorations at the Isurava memorial along the Kokoda Track. The Cosgroves also visited Milne Bay, where the Japanese suffered their first defeat on land during the Pacific war of World War Two.

Bomana War Cemetery is the largest war cemetery in the Pacific with close to 4000 graves, mostly Australian.

US Will Honour Refugee Deal

US Vice President Mike Pence has said the United States would honour a controversial refugee deal with Australia - a deal President Donald Trump had described as "dumb".

Under the deal, agreed with former President Barack Obama late last year, the U.S. would resettle up to 1,250 asylum seekers held in offshore processing camps on South Pacific islands in Papua New Guinea and Nauru.

49th Unitech Graduation

Over 900 students have graduated at Lae's University of Technology from its main campus, and sister colleges, Lae School of Nursing and DATEC Learning Centres. Among them were four foreign students from the Solomon Islands, Jamaica and Timor Leste.

Teacher Reports Assessed

About 5500 teachers' reports from public schools will be assessed starting in Port Moresby. In what is called a joint national ratings conference that will run for five days, more than 100 inspectors from elementary, primary, secondary schools, technical vocational educational training institutions and teachers' colleges are in Port Moresby to go through a trying task to examine the reports.

Tribal Clash Fears

The Kompian-Ambum electoral office has been moved to Wabag town in an unprecedented move as fear grows of tribal fight in Kompiam station in Enga Province. Kompiam returning officer Beto Pokale said that candidates who wish to contest the seat will now have to travel to Wabag to nominate.

Lae Election Policing

The Lae Metropolitan Command has formed a new unit to provide police visibility and more manpower during the election. The city is divided into zones, and officers in each unit will be responsible for maintaining law and order at their designated zones.

Modilon Drug Shortages

Two deaths have been reported in Madang province because of a drug shortage, health authorities report. They said that while a two-month search continues for a new pharmaceutical supplier for the Health Department, many more lives are at risk in the province.

Madang Resource Potential

The potential for large mineral deposits including oil and gas reserves and geothermal potential in Madang Province is quite high. This was revealed to the Madang Provincial Government Executive Council by the Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) during a presentation early this month on Karkar Island.

Sea Rescue

Seven people have evaded death after they were rescued adrift at sea while 4 are still missing between Manus and Madang. About 11 passengers had left the shores of Karkar Island in Madang sailing to Manus on a 23 foot boat when they encountered rough seas and strong winds which sank their boat.

Painful WWII Memories

Shot through the hip while fighting Japanese soldiers along PNG's notorious Kokoda Track, Private Jim Moir lay in agony for 30 days on a stretcher before receiving life-saving medical help. The World War II digger was wounded along with a bunch of mates serving with the 2/16th Australian Infantry Battalion at Brigade Hill in September 1942 as they desperately tried to stop the Japanese advancing towards Port Moresby.

Coffee Borer Beetle

The PNG Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) says the government has let them down by giving them less than half the money they were originally promised to fight the pest that is threatening to devastate the livelihoods of coffee farmers. The CIC has warned repeatedly of the threat posed by the berry borer beetle if it is left unchecked, and back in February the Agriculture Minister, Tommy Tomscoll, pledged to release 50 million kina to help contain the spread.

Kava Confiscated

Officers from the National Agriculture Quarantine Inspection Authority (NAQIA) have impounded a large consignment of kava that was imported illegally by a Port Moresby based; Fijian company.

Kava is a drink widely consumed by Pacific Islanders and permissible in PNG. However, the owners had failed to apply and obtain the import permit before the goods were landed in Port Moresby.





El Nino and Hunger

Since the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon in mid-2015, PNG has been struggling through frost, drought and widespread food and water shortages. As one of the poorest countries in Asia, PNG has 37 percent of its population living below the poverty line. Diseases like malaria are taking an increased toll. People are already weakened by the hunger in PNG, making it difficult to fight off sickness. The weather phenomenon also devastated the crops last year due to frost and drought, leaving farmers with nothing to eat.

PNG Aviation

New investment in airport infrastructure should help drive growth in PNG's aviation sector ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit the country is scheduled to host next year, helping offset a recent drop in earnings. In early February the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed an advisory agreement with PNG to develop a new passenger terminal at the country's Jacksons International Airport, located in Port Moresby.

Major Strides Against Malaria

Despite a rainy season that never ends, a limited infrastructure and near-inaccessible geography, Papua New Guinea has made major strides against malaria. Credit goes to its focus on preventive tools, including bed nets.

Lawn Bowl Tournament

The PNG Open Lawn bowl tournament has ended with the men's singles and women's fours. Metro bowling club president Kevin Kautu thanked all participating provinces and all who assisted throughout the tournament.

Battle of Rabaul

The RABAUL Historical Society has commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Rabaul at an Anzac Day dawn service. Susie McGrade, secretary of Rabaul Historical Society, said this event was Australia's worst military disaster and Rabaul's most terrifying period in history.

Battle of Milne Bay

A small team of PNG historians has visited one of the most crucial battle sites of World War II to record the stories of those who remember it. The team, from the University of Papua New Guinea, spent three weeks in Milne Bay, the scene of a Japanese offensive in August of 1942.

Cape Vogel High

A new high school has been opened at Cape Vogel in Milne Bay by the Member for Alotau, Charles Abel. The school has two classrooms, a dining hall, a 40 bed-dormitory, ablution blocks, and 4 teachers' houses.

John Francis Jackson

The leader of the 75 Squadron, John Jackson, who flew missions during World War II has been thanked for his fight to protect the shores of Port Moresby. The Australian Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, presented medals to Mr Jackson's family in a small but significant ceremony at Bomana War Cemetery.

Port Moresby airport is named after Squadron Leader Jackson.

Boroma Piggery

Boroma Piggery on the outskirts of Port Moresby at Fourteen Mile has opened a new state-of-the-art abattoir, aimed at improving the quality of pork to its consumers. The facility, built at a cost of close to K2 million has been designed with the aim of keeping up with world best health and hygiene standards.
