Scam Nets Over K100,000
A simple scam netted ex library boss, Jacob Hevelawa and his wife K118,000, but if the scheme had not been uncovered they could have gotten away with K1.3 million. Hevelawa's official title was Director General of the Office of Library and Archives (OLA).

BOC, a member of The Linde Group, has opened its new K1.2 million Gas & Gear facility in Lae at an official ceremony attended by local dignitaries, customers and staff. Diplomat Robbed in Moresby
A US Embassy official has been robbed at gunpoint in Port Moresby after being stopped at a police roadblock. A man in civilian clothes, who was with the police, got into the car, produced a pistol and took the American's phone and watch. The official was then forced to drive to an ATM and withdraw cash from his bank account.

NCD Flood
The heavy downpour of rain in the Nation's Capital District on the 10th of October came as surprise as many scurried to find shelter under bus stops and shop fronts. Residents awoke to inspect damages caused by heavy flooding. Several septic pipes and water sources within a number of houses in Badili were destroyed.

Disaster Risks
Western Highlands and Simbu, like other Highlands provinces, are prone to many different hazards including floods, landslides, droughts and frosts. Communities in these provinces are regularly impacted by floods especially those living along the rivers and the flood plains. Infrastructure including the Highlands Highway is also regularly impacted by landslides and other calamities. In 2015/16, both provinces were affected by El Nino-induced drought and frost, especially people living in high altitude areas.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineers
Two women are among the 21 Air Niugini aircraft maintenance engineers who have received their United Kingdom, European Aviation Safety Agency licences after completing five years of training. The license granted by the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority is recognised worldwide.

Australia-Pacific Technical College
Over 200 Papua New Guineans proudly celebrated their achievements during the Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC) graduation ceremony held at Port Moresby recently. The new graduates, including 53 women, join the 2500 Papua New Guineans who have graduated from APTC since its inception in 2007. The graduates received certificates in 17 different programs including carpentry, catering operations and early childhood education.

Sunday Polling Petition Withdrawn
The election petition against Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has been withdrawn by the counsel QC Greg Egan representing petitioner Stanley Liria. This means that the Prime Minister can now concentrate on running the country and the district without thinking to worry about any election related matter before him. Mr O'Neill's win for the Ialibu-Pangia open seat in the Southern Highlands province was challenged by runner-up Stanley Liria, who claimed that the election was conducted on a Sunday that is not allowed by Law.

PNG has asked Australia to provide air security during next years APEC meeting in Port Moresby. In preparation, the Australian Air Force flew two F18 Super hornets into Port Moresby last week. The fighter planes flew back to Australia on Thursday after circling the city three times.

Manus Island Detainees
Manus Island detainees have written to PNG authorities pleading not to be forcibly resettled in PNG. With Australia closing its immigration detention centre at the end of the month, about 800 men will seemingly become the responsibility of the PNG government.

The PNG treasurer says significant progress is being made towards restoring discipline and containing costs within government spending. Minister Targets Illegal Weapons
Police Minister, Jelta Wong, says the government is aiming to strengthen laws to prevent the build-up of illegal weapons. He said hundreds of extra police officers had been deployed to Southern Highlands and Enga to contain lingering unrest. Meanwhile, former PNG military commander Jerry Singirok said the solution to the country's gun problem was to empower the community.
