* Commonwealth Games
PNG boxer, Lynch Ipera, has won a bronze medal at the recently completed Commonwealth games held in Malaysia.
Swimmer Leo Briggs has managed to finish fourth in the B final of the 100m freestyle. This is the best ever finish by a PNG team member placing him 12th in the Commonwealth.
* Soccer
PNG Soccer Players have been invited to become part of an all star Melanesian team under a development program aimed at exposing their talents by playing in European and South American countries.
* Yachting
PNG's leading yacht - API Karnevil - claimed second place in the performance handicap division at Hamilton Island in Australia recently. This result is the best ever by a PNG yacht.

* Economy
The World Bank has told Bill Skate it will not deal with PNG if it does not get rid of former bank employee Dr Pirouz Hamidian-Rad who is currently employed as the country's chief economic adviser.
What will Mr Skate do forgo the employment contract or lose K200 million needed to rescue PNG's economy?
* 7 Million Kina Man.
The PNG Independent has said that Hamidian-Rad should be judged by his performance. He has specified that his K7 million will be paid locally in Kina. Does this mean he is confident of getting the economy turned around or has he allowed for inflation in his figures?
* Police (RPNGC)
The top Islands region policeman has urged his men to feel free to shoot armed criminals.
* Alotau
Police in Milne Bay seized a large consignment of marijuana from Goroka recently. A man has been arrested and charged.
* Aitape Disaster
Clayfield College in Brisbane (Australia) has sent condolence messages and donations. The donation of AUD $1,800 has already been used to purchase sewing machines and material which will be used to sew clothes for children in the care centres.
The National Broadcasting Commission's FM station at Aitape has been temporarily closed down due to transmitter problems. It has been nine weeks since the Tidal Wave.
* Hiri Hanenamo
Sibona Geita from Tubusereia has been crowned Miss Hiri Hanenamo for 1998.
* Morobe Tourism
Bart Philemon has said the following in a letter to the editor of the Independent newspaper. Tourism is now ranked worldwide as the biggest employer of people. In most countries it is the biggest foreign exchange earner. In spite of its obvious benefits to Papua New Guinea, we have been unable to make any headway so far in getting this industry developed. He went on to say that all the Morobe MP's will have to work together to promote tourism in the province.
* Air Niugini
The takeover of Air Niugini by Qantas is close. The PM will make an announcement on his return from USA.
* Highlands
The five highland provinces have been cut off from the outside world due to vandalism at a Telikom repeater station.
