Remember that this mailing list is mainly meant for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time, is currently worth somewhere around 43 - 44 United States cents but varies on a daily basis.

If you are really keen on finding out what the Kina is worth a currency converter for most world currencies can be located at http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/moni.html

For those who are not so familiar with the geography of Papua New Guinea I suggest taking a look http://maps.expedia.com and then click on the find a map option. Go to this link for a quick start to a link to a map of Port Moresby. http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pom-map.html

Also remember that the accuracy of the information in this newsletter should not be relied upon - it is, after all, a gossip newsletter.

Foreign Affairs

It would appear that Foreign Affairs will be slashed heavily in the forthcoming budget. There is talk of cutting down from 21 overse4as offices to seven this would involve the retrenchment of some 111 of the departments 222 officers.

Brigadier General Singirok should resign or so the previous commanders of the Defence force say.

Air Niugini

Senior Management at Air Niugini have been slammed by an aviation historian because they didn't know when the airline commenced its first flight. (Nov 1, 1973) Is that a sign of the top management in the company?

The transmitter site in Moresby has been damaged and the shortwave service to the rest of the country has been off the air recently.

1999 Budget

The budget of K2 billion is down by some K35 million on this year's budget.

The government has proposed to close 15 statutory bodies, agencies and institutions plus a major restructure of other government departments. Some departments will only face a streamline.

If you are interested then pay a visit to either the National or the Post Courier Web Sites for further information.

Sports Commission

The PNG Sports Commission will be one of the bodies axed unless they can find funding for themselves before January.

PNG Coffee

For all of you who have been in Papua New Guinea and tasted the great PNG coffee here is a website bound to bring back memories. It also gives you an opportunity to purchase coffee as well. If coffee isn't your cup of tea then Garaina Tea is also mentioned at the same "coffee" site.

Moresby has received 39.4 mm of rain from Sunday to Monday. Hopefully this will continue.

Traditional totem pole carvings, which have been placed / planted along the roadside in Port Moresby, have come under the scrutiny of the Censorship Board. Several complaints have been made so the censorship board has had photographs taken so they can discuss the matter at their next meeting.

MP's in Cairns

Rumour has it that Members of Parliament who have been faithful to the present government have been flown to Cairns for a weeklong break. The purpose and nature of the trip could not be established.
