The recommended site this time is a site that is part of a student project which had as a goal "to post a web page about the cultural, political, and historical influences that affect the use and development of technology. And to give a technological "state of the union" for the chosen country". The co-author of the PNG pages mentioned the following - "I'd have to guess that about 50 students had similar projects. Most picked the easy countries. France, Germany, UK etc. One of the instructors was supposed to put up an index page, but as of right now that hasn't happened. Being that this project basically WAS our final so most of the students probably don't care. The outgoing Vice Chancellor at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) (Dr Hills) has highlighted the fact that students entering the Uni are not literate. He has said it is a "little frightening" and "it also highlighted the general problem with education in PNG".Dr Hills said first year students at the university taking a "Foundation English" course are tested about a third of the way through their course and only 11 per cent "were judged to be able to benefit from the course".
"There were 60 per cent in the failed category and above who were struggling and were probably unable to cope without special tuition," he said, while noting that at least 50 to 60 per cent of people who graduated from the university 20 years ago would have been represented in the top category.
My wife, who has to cope with teaching medical students at the University Medical Faculty, also reinforces these statements.
+ Arson at UPNG
Five people have been charged with arson and destruction of public properties after police, in a dawn raid on the Waigani campus, arrested them the other day.The people arrested are believed to be students who are alleged to have been involved in the burning of government vehicles three weeks ago at the height of protests over the restructure at the university.
The Student Representative Council has denied that students were involved in the burning of cars, and blamed outsiders for doing it to cast the blame on students given the situation at the campus at the time.

The PNG Exchange was launched yesterday and Prime Minister Skate and Commerce and Industry Minister, Ian Ling Stuckey both made a promise that the government will not interfere in the operations and administration of the exchange.+ Jails
The Correctional Institutional Services chief has said that prisoners in jails around the country will not have anything to eat if money is not forthcoming from the government by the end of May. This will be after the K13 million received by CIS in the 1999 budget runs out.+ Bougainville
The elections on Bougainville have been postponed indefinitely. Papua New Guinea's Minister of State, Sam Akoitai, said the delay will allow time for Bougainville leaders to inform people about a new agreement signed by the leaders at talks in New Zealand last week.+ Army Engineers
Igam Barracks outside Lae has been made the home of the Engineering Battalion in a recent restructure. The Australian government established Igam in 1967.+ Western Province "Flying Doctor"
The Pioneer Health Services in Western Province has stopped providing mobile medical services because the provincial government has failed to honour contractual obligations. The plane used in the services has been withdrawn to Australia.+ Madang
Yabob villagers have spotted a huge saltwater crocodile in Madang. The villagers and residents of Madang are on full alert following the report.+ Jackson's Security
The guards at Jackson's airport will be better able to patrol the airport thanks to a donation of two vehicles by AusAid. The vehicles are valued in excess of K100,000.+ Lihir Schools
Parents and Wantoks of the Lihir International School have donated much needed teaching materials to the government and mission run schools situated on Lihir island, New Ireland.+ Asian Development Bank
It was reported in the National Newspaper recently that a 1998 report by the Asian Development Bank has said that PNG had the second worst project disbursement ratio. PNG came second to Fiji among the island nations in the Pacific. This has resulted in the cancellation of surplus loan proceeds of US$31.3 million (K75 million) last year.+ Parliament Adjournment
The NBC and PacNews have reported that the Ombudsman's Office in Papua New Guinea is taking legal action against Government and the Parliament for their decision to adjourn Parliament for seven months last December.
