Police Shootout Unsurprising

The former commander of the PNG Defence Force, Major General Jerry Singarok says he's not surprised by the shootout between soldiers and police officers in Port Moresby over the weekend.

Air Niugini

The National Airline has announced the resumption of flights to Aropa airport. Aropa serves Kieta on the island of Bougainville. Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer, Simon Foo, has said the resumption of Air Niugini services will greatly help the people of Buin, Panguna, Torokina, Wakunai and others who now have easy access for their air travel needs as they do not have to travel all the way to Buka to get on an aircraft.

Air Niugini's initial services into Kieta will be every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. All services will be operated by Air Niugini's Q400 aircraft. One of the Q400's has been named Kieta in recognition of the historical event.

Doha Swimming

Fourteen year-old Savanah Tkatchenko has broken several PNG age records and set personal best times while swimming at the recent 12th FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships held at Doha in Qatar. Ryan Pini, swimming at the same event, broke six of his own PNG records.

Refugee Applications

PNG has approved 50 refugee applications from the 1,000 men on Manus Island, but is yet to resettle anyone. PNG will give refugees 12-month bridging visas and help them find jobs but the longer-term prospects for refugees are not clear.

Barramundi's Cricket

PNG cricket coach Dipak Patel was full of praise for his team after they defended their South Australian Premier League T20 title in dramatic fashion. The Barramundi's beat the Southern Force by one wicket in Saturday's final, reaching their target of 121 with three balls to spare, with only fast bowlers Norman Vanua and Willie Gavera left at the crease.

Malaria Goals

The WHO's head of vector borne diseases Dr Eva Christophel says funding for long term mosquito nets, and improved drug treatment has made a huge difference. She says the 75 per cent reduction is one of the Millennium Development Goals and the drop in mortality and morbidity from malaria is incredible.

Police Head Faces Contempt Charge

Police Commissioner, Geoffrey Vaki, has failed in his bid to have a contempt of court case against him thrown out. The case relates to allegations that Mr Vaki conspired to prevent an arrest warrant from being issued against Prime Minister O'Neill in June.

Fuel Prices

The Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) has announced that fuel prices will be lower this month on advice from Puma Energy and based on the import parity prices.
