Drought Relief

In response to the prolonged dry spell in PNG as a result of the El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific region, the European Commission is providing 110,000 EUR in humanitarian funding to assist the most affected inhabitants.


Yampu Health Centre

Seven selected rural hospitals, including the Catholic Health Centre at Yampu, in the Enga province have taken part in a first of its kind program to test portable scanning devices to use on pregnant mothers and aims to reduce the amount of deaths happening during birth complications.


Yoga in Moresby

Free yoga classes have been introduced to settlements and shanty town areas in Port Moresby by Fazilah Bazari, a young woman with Indian-Melanesian heritage.


Besta Cup

Goroka will play host to the PNG Football Association Besta Cup Highlands leg at the National Sports Institute from 9th to 11th of October. The Highlands region will be the last Besta Cup tournament before the finals in Lae.


Andy Bawa Farewelled

The National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Andy Bawa has officially stepped down as the Chief of police in the Nation's Capital during a hand over takeover parade in Port Moresby. Bawa will be replaced by acting Chief Inspector Benjamin Turi as the new NCD Metropolitan Superintendent.

The Acting Top Management of the University of Goroka will organise a referendum for the academic staff to vote for the recommencement of classes.


PNG Cricket

The Digicel PNG Barramundis touched down in Alice Springs this week to play their first 2-Day Match of the SACA Premier League against the Northern Territory Strike.


The Digicel PNG Barramundis notched up their first ever 2-Day victory in the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) Premier League with a convincing 212 run victory against the Northern Territory Strike in Alice Springs thanks to a brilliant maiden century by Hanuabada all-rounder, Hiri Hiri.


Distinguished Services Recognition

Minister of Moresby South, Justin Tkatchenko, has presented awards to senior citizens from his electorate for the distinguished services to their respective communities.


Shooting Victim to Return

A woman who was shot in Papua New Guinea just over a year ago says the experience stripped the fear out of her life. Cathy Franzoi will now go full circle and return to the place where she was hit during a gun fight.

The incident happened after a volunteering trip she was on with her teenage son Luke, for Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Medical Ships, offering medical training to local communities.

Rugby League in PNG has seen the growth of women's participation to the code throughout the years.

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill is hopeful Australia and New Zealand will recognise the investment his country has made in sporting infrastructure by sharing hosting rights to the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

Sirinumu Dam Low

Water levels have already dropped below the 50% mark at the Sirinumu Dam. The dam is the only source of water for service providers PNG Power and Eda Ranu for power generation and water supply for Port Moresby.


SunRice Offers Medical Aid

An Australian rice company operating in PNG could help deliver much-needed medical supplies around the country. SunRice has offered the use of its trucks to Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, who has been pushing to increase the involvement of private businesses in aid delivery.


National Mangrove Policy

PNG needs to have in place a National Mangrove Policy. The need was expressed among agencies at a forum held in Port Moresby recently to strategise and formulate a way forward to save depleting mangrove vegetation in coastal communities.


Climate Action Plan

PNG has submitted its Climate Action Plan Ahead of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The Paris agreement will come into effect in 2020, empowering all countries to act to prevent average global temperatures rising above 2 degrees Celsius and to reap the many opportunities that arise from a necessary global transformation to clean and sustainable development.


Teachers Savings and Loans

Teachers Savings and Loans Society has opened its 15th Branch, this time in Popondetta, Northern province. After nine years of operation as a sub-branch, the province finally welcomed a full branch.


Namah Wants Baki and Rabura Charged

The member for Vanimo Green Belden Namah wants the Police Commissioner Gary Baki and Chief Migration Officer Mataio Rabura charged for interfering with the course of justice.


Judicial Independence Queried

An executive member of Australia's peak legal body says reports that two Australian lawyers have been banned from entering PNG raises serious questions about judicial independence. An executive member for the Law Council of Australia, Morry Bailes, says he is disturbed by the reports.

India Night Recognises Achievements

The PNG Indian community enjoyed a colourful evening of celebrations last night at the Sir John Guise Stadium, commemorating 34 years of bilateral friendship with PNG.


Domestic Violence

International volunteering organisation VSO have made a video highlighting the high levels of domestic violence in PNG and what's being done to change this. At least 67% of women in PNG are beaten by their husbands. For a country not at war, it has one of the highest rates of violence in the world.


Minister Seeks US Support

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Rimbink Pato, has sought the support of the United States regarding Pacific Islands State issues, including climate change.


Air Niugini

Sixteen lucky passengers on Air Niugini flights on the 25th of September were upgraded to business class seats as part of the airline's promotion in recognition of the country's 40th anniversary.


Drink Driving Common

Drink driving in Port Moresby is becoming more rampant, despite Police road blocks. Police officers say, drink driving is becoming common with motorists not considering traffic laws. With the Festive season nearing, police say they will tighten up on intoxicated motorists in the city.
