Remember that this mailing list is mainly meant for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time, is currently worth somewhere around 27 - 28 United States cents but varies on a daily basis.

If you are really keen on finding out what the Kina is worth a currency converter for most world currencies can be located at http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/moni.html

For those who are not so familiar with the geography of Papua New Guinea I suggest taking a look http://maps.expedia.com and then click on the find a map option. Go to this link for a quick start to a link to a map of Port Moresby. http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pom-map.html

Also remember that the accuracy of the information in this newsletter should not be relied upon - it is, after all, a gossip newsletter.

Digital Telikom

Here is something submitted from Terry of Pacom Communications whose company web page is located at http://www.prosec.com.pg/pacom/

I hope the DCA Communications staff members have had a look at the photo next to page 1 in the PNG yellow pages section of the 2001 phone book.

It appears that Telikom have built a large communications tower next to their new facility!!!

Amazing what can be done with digital images!! Thought I recognised the site.

Stolen Radios and Telephones

Terry has provided the following bit of advice as well - Could you please advise your members that the Communications Industry Association (PNG) has started a database of stolen radios and Mobile phones which will be distributed amongst the CIA members.

Reports of stolen radios and phones with details of model, serial numbers (you have recorded these I hope) and any other markings will help in recovering units brought into our businesses for reprogramming or sale.

The general policy of most communications companies who receive "Found" radios or phones is to attempt to locate the original owner, advise them that the unit has been "found" and if necessary involve the Police.

No money is offered for purchase or "reward" for finding the unit.

We hope that this information will help slow down the thriving market in stolen Radios and Phones.

Rugby League

Top Australian Rugby League referee, Bill Harrigan, was caught out in the recent Kumuls versus Kangaroos match held in Port Moresby at the PRL ground. The PNG Kumuls scored a try and the ref went to the "video ref" for confirmation except this is PNG and there is no video ref so he quickly blew his whistle to indicate a try had been scored. (hoping no one had seen his slip up except, I think by then, everyone in the crowd had already seen it or been told about it!)

Rice

It has been reported that PNG spends K400 million a year on importing 135 tonnes of rice. Each person in PNG is supposedly eating 25 Kilogram of rice per year.

Sister City

A sister city arrangement between Port Moresby and Townsville in Australia has seen AusAID provide funding for a four year local level government funding package worth almost AUD $400,000. Two other cities will also benefit from other Australian sister city funding. Lae is paired with Cairns in Queensland and Mount Hagen is paired with Orange in New South Wales

Lae

The Lae Chamber of Commerce is concerned about the appearance of many illegal markets within the town. The fact that items such as fuel, including outboard motor fuel and diesel in plastic containers, are on sale has raised concerns about safety to life and property.

Buka

Power problems in Buka are expected to continue this week. Some areas of Buka have electricity for four hours during the daylight hours whilst some only get two hours. Most areas then have electricity from 6pm to 4am the next day. The generator has broken down and workmen are waiting on one more part before they can fix it.

ATM banking and teller services have returned to Buka Island, Bougainville after recent disruptions. However, the man allegedly assaulted by bank hired security staff, is demanding K20,000 in compensation which may force the bank to close again.

Qantas

Qantas, in a bid to cash in on the downfall of its main competitor in Australia (Ansett), has pulled out of flying to PNG for anything up to two months. This leaves Air Niugini with its solitary Airbus attempting to service the gap as well as maintain existing services to Singapore and Manila. The Airbus flight to Cairns has been replaced with Fokker F28 jets. Subject to Government approval the Airbus will on some days be making more than one trip "down south". Direct flights to Sydney from Port Moresby have been replaced with flights via Brisbane.

PNGDF

The Secretary of the PNG Defence Force is heading to Germany in an attempt to finalise a K71 million loan. The loan agreement will need to be approved by the National Executive Council. The loan will be used to fund a new telecommunications network and a national building project. The PNGDF currently spend K9 million a year on telecommunications costs.

Tsunami

A false tsunami warning recently had Air Niugini in a flap as it had an aircraft on a scheduled overnight stop in Wewak, East Sepik Province. I believe the Captain had trouble raising anyone in authority apart from the ever-reliable Captain Sharpe. Luckily the tsunami warning proved to be false and the aircraft stayed on the ground. Air Niugini had another lucky escape or so the folklore says when one of its F28's was the last aircraft to leave the old Rabaul airport during the 1994 eruption. Several other aircraft were not as lucky and were buried under the muck created by the erupting volcano.

Rabaul

It has been estimated that another volcanic eruption will hit Rabaul, East New Britain province in the next 25 to 30 years. This is based on data collected from the 1887, 1937 and 1994 eruptions, as well as data collected from 1968 up until the 1994 eruption.

Fruit Fly

Fruit fly is threatening the banana crops in East New Britain. This is a serious threat as the population rely on bananas as a staple food and one that generates income at the markets.

Bulolo

The district administration office in Bulolo has been burnt to the ground. Police believe the fire was a result of arson.

Fire Services

The Fire Service within PNG is about to take on other activities outside its core responsibility of fighting fires. The Fire Service hopes to be able to branch out into activities such as ambulance, land and sea rescue and motor vehicle accident rescue.

Police

The sixth annual police women's conference will be held at Kokopo, East New Britain from the 8th to the 10th of October. It is estimated that over 100 policewomen possibly as high as 150 are expected to attend the conference.

Escapees

Over 50 of the 62 people who recently escaped from Bomana jail just outside Port Moresby are still on the run. Police have put out another appeal to the general public and relatives of the escapees to help the police apprehend them. People who are caught harbouring criminals will be charged.

NCDC

Philip Taku, the governor of the National Capital District Commission (NCDC), who was reinstated recently by the National Court, has said that the NCDC is broke. In fact the main account with the Papua New Guinea Banking Corporation (PNGBC) is about K1 million in the red. Mr Taku returned after a two-year suspension claiming that the bank accounts are almost empty and in some cases overdrawn. His administration was suspended on the 7th of September 1999.

Air Niugini

It is hoped that now PNG has celebrated its 26th birthday Air Niugini or the publisher will remove the 25th PNG Anniversary logo from their Paradise in-flight magazine.

Governors Conference

The Governors Conference was recently held in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province between the 2nd and the 4th of October.

Amongst the many items discussed were the proposed changes to the Value Added tax system. The provincial governments would like to receive 70 percent of the tax with the remainder going to the national government. It was also mention that 25 percent of the VAT collected tint that National Capital District should go towards the people of the Central Province, many of whom commute to the Capital every working day. The Governors would also like more autonomy for the provinces.

Lae Tuna

A newly established tuna fishing company has announced the purchase of two new boats at a cost of K2.5 million. The company, MAPS Tuna Limited, hope to be able to increase the fleet to five by early next year.

Medical Open Day

A poorly attended University Medical Faculty Open Day was held on Saturday at the Medical campus situated on the Port Moresby General Hospital. The final year students took charge of the day with a little help from their lecturers. Children, from four or younger were fascinated with various displays of the body as well as medical related equipment such as microscopes. Attendees were able to have a free test for diabetes.

Don Bosco

On the same weekend as the Medical Faculty the Don Bosco school held a cultural open day with students and friends of students participating.

Supermarket Girls

As mentioned in the last newsletter -- Over the PNG Independence weekend many of the supermarket employees dressed in traditional attire.

These girls were from Andersons Koki (Port Moresby)

Education Roadshow

An Australian Education Roadshow will be held in Port Moresby on the 12th and 13th of October. It is currently on tour to various provinces around the country. Goroka 8th of October, Lae 9th of October and Rabaul 10th of October.

Soccer

A former president of the PNG Soccer has died in Wabag, Enga Province on Wednesday. Peter Mommers, a naturalised citizen and former missionary, led the dwindling Highlands soccer associations into a boom in the 1990's. He was also the president of the Women's Oceania Soccer Federation.

School Fees

The final term of the school year has started and many students are being turned away for non-payment of school fees.

Eastern Highlands

The Eastern Highlands Provincial Education Division have vowed to take parents to court after several high schools in the province have suspended classes over non-payment of school fees by parents.

Ilimo Farm

The National Court placed Ilimo Poultry Products into liquidation on Thursday. The poultry company was started in 1955 and was taken over by the Investment Corporation Fund of PNG (ICFPNG) in 1978. The ICFPNG attempted to sell the company in 1999 but the sale was cancelled. Since the company ceased poultry production in April of this year the management has been using the land for market gardening.

Bank of Hawaii

The Managing Director of the ANZ Bank (PNG) and the Managing Director of the Bank of Hawaii (PNG) have announced that the ANZ Bank will be taking over the Bank of Hawaii operations in PNG and the South Pacific following a K175 million deal to purchase the Bank of Hawaii's PNG, Vanuatu and Fiji operations.

Financial Institutions

Port Moresby

The population of Port Moresby is currently a little over 250,000 people. This figure is expected to at least double by the year 2015. There is currently an estimated unemployment rate of at least 60 percent within the city.
