and even some airline related humour. This site has more than mentioned above
so my tip is to visit and take a good look around.
His section on PNG airstrips carries the following disclaimer. PNG Airstrip
Data is published only as a guide to pilots in matters helpful to operations,
such as GPS settings, wind characteristics, and surface conditions. The PNG
AIP-AGA is the legal document governing aviation operations.

HTML Version
I think I am lucky that not many people get the "html" version
of the newsletter. I was overseas and did not have access to a suitable PC
to send the html version last issue. What went out as the html version was
the "text only" version with all multiple spaces compressed to a
single space and all end of paragraphs totally ignored. The "real"

- Scott Braiding was the only one to point out this fact and apart from the
embarrassment I am thankful to him for pointing out my error. Hopefully things
will be almost back to normal with this edition and flying high with the next
one.
South Pacific Games
Dika Toua from the big Port Moresby village of Hanuabada has set five new
South Pacific and Oceania records (both junior and senior) as well as a junior
Commonwealth record in the weightlifting 53kg division. Athletics stars Mowen
Boino and Sandy Katusele have both contributed to the gold medal tally along
with Dika. Katusele made PNG history when he broke a long drought to win gold
in the high jump. The PNG cricketers have also won gold.
Solomon Islands
PNG will send 84 policemen and soldiers, consisting of 40 policemen and 44
soldiers, to the Australian-led multi-national intervention force on the Solomon
Islands. Australia will fund the exercise. PNG law does not allow the use
of policemen outside PNG so Parliament will be asked to amend the law to allow
the policemen to be deployed on the Solomon Islands. The regional Solomon
Islands response unit will take two to three months to fully assemble but
the first members of the force are expected to be in place in the Solomon
Islands capital of Honiara by the end of this month. (July 2003).
PNG Telikom
Nearly the whole of PNG was plunged into a major telecommunication blackout
recently due to a power failure at the Boroko Telephone Exchange in Port Moresby.
Other people have had major cables vandalised so they have had a double dose
of outages. Mobile telephones, the Internet, telephone calls and facsimile
have all been off the air.
Kokoda Trail
Thanks to help from the Australian government villages along the Kokoda Trail
now have access to fresh water. The Australian Government has funded the construction
of water supply projects in 11 villages along the Trail, including Kovelo,
Isurava, Alola, Abuari, Hagutava, Kaile, Felai, Kanadara, Hoi/Mudulu, Soa
and the new Isurava memorial. Australia has also been expanding the radio
network along the Kokoda Trail. Soldiers from the Australian Defence co-operation
program have installed 18 radio stations along the Kokoda Trail to improve
communications.

Province
Tuna Charter
A Russian military-built aircraft, the AN12 Antonov, has been refitted to
carry up to 12,500 tonnes of freight between Lae and Brisbane once every week
on Wednesdays. The freight from Lae will mainly consist of Tuna and the freighter
will be available for shipment of freight from Brisbane directly to Lae.
Air Niugini
It has been reported that the new Chief Executive Officer of Air Niugini
has started off on the right foot by having informal talks with all departments
of the airline. It is hoped that he can build on that and get the very demoralised
staff motivated so the airline can perform as well if not better than other
airlines in the world.
National Parliament Speaker
The speaker of the National Parliament has indicated that he will step down
if a pending repeal of the National Capital District Commission Act, which
will restore full provincial government status to the nation's capital, is
successful as he will become the governor of NCDC. The government of former
Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta passed the NCDC Act in 2001 that effectively
barred the NCDC from being headed by a Governor and the Motu-Koitabu Assembly
from active participation in the affairs of NCDC
Air Travel Charges
The Civil Aviation Authority has given 60 days notice that it plans to increase
the current K30 facilities charges tax at the Port Moresby Jackson's International
Airport to K60. It is also proposing a K10 Facilities Charges Tax on all departures
from Jackson's Domestic Airport. The Civil Aviation Authority says this will
allow the Authority to break even. Other plans are afoot to increase landing
charges for planes and helicopters at Port Moresby and other airports outside
Port Moresby
Visa Fees
The Foreign Affairs Minister has said that he is willing to look at the recently
increased visa fees for entry into PNG. Many experts in the already hard hit
tourist industry have claimed that the fees are too high and that tourists
are being driven away. Genuine tourists are issued visas on arrival into PNG
if they have a valid return ticket to another country.
Tourism
Malum Nalu, from the Tourism Promotion Authority has said that visitor numbers
for PNG are up in first quarter. A total 13,274 international visitors came
to PNG during the first quarter of 2003 (January to March). This reflects
a substantial increase of 5 per cent over the same period last year. The main
reasons for the visitors coming to the country were business 9542 (72 per
cent); holiday 2760 (21 per cent); visiting friends and relatives 1401 (7
per cent); and other purposes 67 (1 per cent). Australia was the largest source
of visitors during the quarter (6328) followed by USA (1602), Japan (683)

Wabag University
The University of PNG has refurbished and reopened the university centre
in Wabag, Enga Province. This follows on from the signing of a memorandum
of agreement between the Enga Provincial Government and the UPNG at Wabag.
Enga Show
The Enga Cultural Show Committee has received a donation of K30,000 from
the Enga Governor who said the money came from the Mineral Resources Enga
Group. The Enga provincial Government has also donated K100,000 towards the
cost of running the show but another K95,000 is required to run the show.
The show is expected to get underway on the 8th of August and go to the 10th
of August.
PNG Gas Project
Energex Australia has signed an agreement to buy gas from PNG. Energex has
conditionally agreed to purchase between 480 and 1200 petajoules of gas from
PNG over a 20-year period commencing around 2007. this commitment is not sufficient
to kick start the project as other commitments are required to make the project
viable.
World Bank
It has been claimed by forest activists (PNG Forest Watch) that the World
Bank has issued a 30-day ultimatum to the National Government to rid the forest
industry of corruption. If PNG does not comply with the ultimatum then it
has been said that the World Bank would withdraw the bank's aid package to
PNG.
PNG Telephone Book
Has anyone noticed the fact that the International Time Zone Chart on page
eight (8) of the newly released printed copy of the 2003 PNG white pages shows
Papua New Guinea as being minus two (-2) hours from PNG time! New Zealand
is shown as being the same time zone as PNG. Is this a case of someone "pinching"
a time zone map from another country and using it illegally in PNG or just
a typical PNG stuff up? Thanks to Bruce in Melbourne for picking up this fact.
Of course the telephone book was never renowned for any form of accuracy -
my own entry took over 18 years to get in the book. If anyone is after a fairly
accurate telephone book for PNG then you can't go past the electronic version
