Walking Shark
A shark that walks on its fins has been found in PNG. Scientists carrying
out research in the country say they have discovered dozens of new species
underwater, including a shark that walks on its fins and a shrimp that
looks like a praying mantis. The shark grows up to 1.2 metres (4ft)
long and they are able to "walk" along the seafloor using
their muscular pectoral fins.

Hiri Hanenamo Quest
Miss Alison Corrinna Exton from Hanuabada has won the 2006 Hiri
Hanenamo Quest. Runner up was Robin Kila from Gaire. 2005 winner,
Hitolo Mase Talai, was at the presentation ceremony to hand over
her title. Alison is currently a student at the Port Moresby National
High School.

Americans Honoured
Several Americans, who have had an association with PNG, have been
honoured and recognised by the PNG Government during the recent Independence
celebrations. Prime Minster Somare, who was in the USA for the 62nd
United Nations General Assembly, was able to present some of them with
their honours.

Airlines PNG
Airlines PNG have revised its domestic flight schedules to become effective
from the first of October. The airline said the new schedule would allow
better connections between the main PNG provincial airports and Port
Moresby and through Port Moresby onto and from its Brisbane and Cairns
international services.
Goroka Show
Overall the 50th Goroka show was a success except that it was marred
by many tourists and show goers having their pockets picked. A Japanese
tourist who stayed on after the show to see the sights of Goroka and
the surrounding areas was stabbed and is in a critical condition in

PNG Aust Gas Project
Oil Search Ltd managing director, Paul Botten, has said that a new
shorter design was being considered for the proposed Papua New Guinea
- Australia natural gas pipeline that could keep the project alive. The
new pipeline plan, which trims about 400km from a previous design, has
emerged after a week of discussions with several potential partners.
The new route would see the PNG Australia pipeline joining up with the
existing connection from Mt. Isa to Moomba. The previous plan hit a
roadblock last month when Australian Gas Light Co, the project's chief
architect, said it might pull out due to a lack of firm buyers for the
gas amid rising construction costs.

Another International Airline
Another overseas airline (Airefata) is about to offer international
flights to and from PNG. Airefata hopes to be able to offer a Jayapura
to Port Moresby service. Depending on demand, Airefata is expected to
use its newly acquired 145-seat DC8 jetliner to service the Port Moresby-Jayapura
route taking an estimated hour and a half. This service was previously
operated via Vanimo by Air Niugini but was considered unprofitable and
cancelled many years ago. -- Jayapura is the provincial capital of Indonesia's
Papua province.
Sealark
The report about the fire onboard and later sinking of the Sealark
has been published. The official investigation has revealed possible
falsified crew documentation and lack of proper safety training for
its crew. The investigators found that Sealark's crew documentation
was "out of date or not recognised by the Flag State of Papua New
Guinea". It has also uncovered potentially forged vessel certification
and seafarer documents. The Sealark sank on the Saturday the 8th of
April 2006 at about 10am after a fire, which started at about 1.45pm
the day before in the engine room, engulfed the ship.
Gourmet Coffee
It has been announced that the PNG Coffee Growers Federation (PNGCGF)
is about to enter the coffee retail market in the United States. Coffee
Pacifica, who are the distributor and a marketer in US, Canada and Europe
of green bean coffee grown in PNG, has decided to acquire a new coffee
roasting company with 50 franchised retail outlets across the States.
PNGCGF is a major shareholder of Coffee Pacifica with the chairman of
the PNGCGF being the vice-chairman of Coffee Pacifica.
PNG exports approximately 2 percent of the world's annual green bean
production.
PNG Gold
Investigations in Perth by Australian police have led to the questioning
and arrest of three security guards in Port Moresby. Several bars of
Lihir gold went missing in transit from PNG to Australia. Over eight
kilograms of the stolen gold was sold in the National Capital to the
Metal Refining Operation who alerted police when the same person came
back to sell more gold. The Assistant Commissioner of Police (Southern
Region) Tony Wagambie has said that "a lot of people are involved
in this whole thing so we are not able to comment on it right now".
Prince Claus Award
Michael Mel, a lecturer in Expressive Arts at Goroka University, has
won the first Prince Claus Award in PNG as part of the 2006 awards.
His category was "Laureates working in the area of cultural education
and debate".

Govt Appointments
It appears that while Sir Michael Somare was out of the country the
acting Prime Minister decided it was time to make some changes. The
result seems to be a complete mess with one newspaper incorectly reporting
that the Governor General had refused to sign the necessary appointment
paperwork until the mess was sorted out.

The Governor-General Sir Paulias Matane has celebrated his 75th
birthday surrounded by his family on the 21st of September.
Unitech IT
Vice Chancellor Misty Baloiloi has said that the University
of Technology, in Lae, is desperate for an upgrading of its information
and communication technology infrastructure to ensure it meets the government's
development efforts. At the moment, the vice chancellor said the university
needed more computers for students use to improve competitiveness. He
said the ratio today was one computer to seven students but for a well-equipped
university and for the sake of students learning it was desirable to
have a computer shared by four students.
Snooker Title
Gus Kraus recently won the 2006 PNG National Men's Snooker Titles.
Kraus defeated Djorne Fong five frames to two in the best of nine in
the grand final held at the Port Moresby Country Club. The event was
sponsored by the Bank South Pacific.

I am not sure who designed the K50 and K100 notes and the 50t coin
but I do know that a boy from Milne Bay attending the Goroka Technical
College was selected from several others to design the PNG bank notes
and coins. Once 16 year-old William Stevens from Ladava in Milne
Bay was selected he ended up in a back room of the Australian Note Issue
Department of the Reserve Bank of Australia in Melbourne for two years.
He actually flew back to PNG on the same plane that carried over K12
million in crisp notes and shiny coins bearing his exclusive designs.

Illegal Aliens
Three Sri Lankans have been detained after arriving at Jackson's International
Airport on a plane from Singapore. The Sri Lankans are accused of having
false documents were locked up at the Boroko Police cells before being
deported to Singapore where they started their journey. Foreign Affairs
confirmed that the three were members of the Tamil Tigers who were trying
to seek asylum in Australia via PNG.

Winger Marcus Bai has signed a new one-year deal with the Bradford
Bulls in the UK Super League and is set to become the oldest player
in the league.
