PNG Trainspotters
Here is one for the trainspotters. Marengo Mining is planning, as part of its development plan for the Yandera copper-molybdenum project, to build PNG's first railway of any size. The 100km line from the Ramu Valley to the coast near Madang will cost $US224 million ($267 million), including track, bridges, locomotives and wagons.
Communication Skills Training
Advanced Communication Skills Training is scheduled for November 5 - 9 at the Divine Word University campus in Madang. Topics include: Writing effectively and powerfully; Promoting an organisation; Strategic planning; Action planning; Developing a financing strategy; Writing a funding proposal; Monitoring and evaluation; Writing a media release. Training fee is K750 and includes course materials, lunch, tea and access to computer laboratories. Limited accommodation is available on campus. Digicel
Digicel continues to rapidly roll out its state-of-the-art network. It now covers provinces including Central, Morobe, Madang, Simbu, Eastern Highlands, Western Highlands, East New Britain and recently New Ireland. New Irelanders will now be able to own a mobile phone and connect to the rest of Digicel PNG network.
Starting Small Library in Moresby

This message is for anyone who has struggled to find new books while living in the Port Moresby area. A small members-only library is starting up in town, and all are invited to join. To become a member, you must donate at least 4 books to our common collection. Once you have done so, you are entitled to borrow half the number of books you have donated. So if you donated 4 books, you can borrow 2 from the collection at any one time; if you donated 11, you can borrow 5. Wewak Blackout
PNG Power consumers in Wewak, East Sepik province have been suffering for weeks following the break-down of three of the five generators at the Boram power station. Substantial loses are being incurred as the blackouts are affecting government offices, individual households and business houses. A number of shops in Wewak that do not have standby generators have also expressed dissatisfaction because they have been losing customers and would continue to do so unless the problem is rectified.
UniTech Blackout
Power to the University of Technology has been cut by PNG Power due to unpaid electricity bills preventing students from having access to vital facilities for their studies. The power supplier opted to take the drastic action after the university failed to settle outstanding bills totalling K600,000 incurred this year. The university has paid K483,000 recently to PNG Power and PNG Power gave its assurance that it would reconnect the power supply as soon as possible.
National Swimming Championship
Thirty PNG records have been broken at the recent Marsh National Swimming championship held at the Ela Murray International School 25 metre pool in the National Capital District. Many of the swimmers have been inspired by the results set by Ryan Pini in international events.
Plan for Future
Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare has appealed to Papua New Guineans to reflect on the achievements over the last 32 years and plan for the next 30 years. He was speaking at the Prince Charles Oval in Wewak during a parade by members of the 2RPIR from Moem Barracks, ex-servicemen and school children.
Middle Watut
According to village court officials drug abuse is rampant in the Middle Watut area of the Bulolo district in Morobe province. They have called on police in the province to conduct awareness for the people to discourage dug abuse. The officials are also appealing to police to conduct raids in villagers to crack down on the drug ring in the community.
Illegal Drugs
Illegal medical drugs being sold on the shelves in Goroka have been confiscated by health authorities. The Goroka General Hospital pharmacy staff carried out the inspection and confiscated several bags of medical drugs worth hundreds of kina. But the team believes more drugs are hidden away. Many of the seized drugs are meant to be prescription only medicine or pharmacy only medicine which should only be dispensed in accordance with the Medicine and Cosmetic Act and Regulations, 2001.
Independence Day
People from PNG living in New Zealand have celebrated their PNG Independence day with traditional performances of traditional dances from the Siassi area of Morobe province blended with some Oro and Highlands flavour. The celebrations were hosted by the PNG High Commission in Wellington and the PNG Wellington community. PNG's Melanesian neighbours Vanuatu and Solomon Islands also performed dances and string band items for guests.
Mt Hagen Mining

Personalised Stamps
The PNG Philatelic Bureau run by Post PNG is offering PNG's first personalised stamps. Personalised stamps allows the printing of a photograph, logo or message on the tab of the stamp. The tab is the same size as the existing stamps and each tab is attached to a valid stamp. The personalised stamps are being issued in denominations of 85t, K3.00, K3.35 and K5.35.
