Sports Minister Attacked

Philemon Embel, the PNG Sports Minister, has suffered a broken ankle and is having to use crutches after being attacked by people in his Poroma, Southern Highlands province electorate. Mr Embel said the injury will prevent him from attending the Commonwealth Games meeting of sports ministers in New Delhi and the Four Nations rugby league tournament in Australia and New Zealand next month. The injury will also prevent Mr Embel from donating a 45-horsepower motor and 19-foot dinghy to Mt Musava, in his electorate consisting of 130,000 people with five local level governments.

Another Member of Parliament, Kerema MP Pitom Bombom, was chased, kicked and punched by up to 300 men and women as he disembarked from his plane in Gulf province. According to the Post Courier and The national newspapers, the assault came from constituents who accused Mr Bombom of lying to and failing them during his years in parliament.

Export Crops

In 2008 export earnings from tree crops such as oil palm, coffee, cocoa, coconut, tea and rubber passed the K2 billion mark. Oil palm by itself earned K1 billion. An expected worldwide shortage of coffee beans this year should see an increase in coffee earnings.

Port Moresby Morgue

The Port Moresby Morgue is overfull. The Port Moresby General Hospital has requested relatives of the dead to make arrangements to remove the bodies as soon as possible. If relatives do not come forward the hospital will arrange a mass burial to clear the morgue. The fully packed morgue, a container, has bodies placed on top of each other. As there is no room for any more bodies relatives are being told to immediately take the bodies of their loved ones home or to the funeral home. Unfortunately the hospital has to clear space in the morgue while trying to show respect for the deceased.

War Relics Found

Relics from the Second World War have been found by settlers on Independence Day near a disused military airstrip at Saiwara in the Sogeri valley near Port Moresby. The names on the relics, tags and the spoons were believed to be of US senior military officers who were actively fighting to stop the advancement of the Japanese forces from capturing Port Moresby during the war.

Highlands Highway

Problems continue along the Kainantu section of the Highlands Highway. Police are unable to guarantee the safety of the travelling public and transport companies are concerned at the potential financial implication.

A mine can now proceed to dump millions of tonnes of waste into the sea at Astrolabe Bay, near Madang after a legal battle to stop it was abandoned. The lifting of the injunction means the majority Chinese-owned mine can proceed with plans to dump 5 million tonnes of tailings a year into a deep-sea trench. -- http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/09/25/3021771.htm -- The adding of a fourth plaintiff was denied although the judge said a new action may be brought.
