Amendment to Section 124 And 145

Hon. Sam Basil, MP, Deputy Leader of Opposition has called on the Prime Minister to withdraw his Governments proposed Amendments to the Constitution in particular Section 124 (Calling of Parliament and Meeting) and Section 145 (Votes of No Confidence). It is claimed these are a step towards uncensored corruption, gagging of parliament and anarchy.

Female Police Superintendent

Commissioner for police Tom Kulunga announced the appointment of the first women to be appointed to a senior position in the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary.

She is Superintendent Joanne Clarkson, who has been elevated to the Assistant Commissioner Reforms position. It's a new position that caters for the reforms currently taking place within the constabulary.

Westpac Outstanding Women Awards

Westpac is offering the chance for three female tertiary students/adult workers who wish to return to study in PNG to each receive a K6,000 Grant to pay for education-related expenses.

PNG Power

PNG Power has celebrated 50 years since starting operations on the 1st of July 1963 as the PNG Electricity Commission (ELCOM).

PNG Power has put up new security lights for Sabama Market and the Community.

PNG power has also donated two computers and a printer to the Gerehu police station. The state-owned power utility also installed security lighting outside the police station and new switches and cables to restore power within the building.

Power in PNG

Rainbow Power Company in Nimbin, Australia, has signed a deal to provide renewable electricity to more than 3500 homes in 49 villages in PNG. Each of the 49 villages will be provided with a three-phase solar system with battery storage that will be distributed via a mini grid.

Sir Hubert Murray Stadium

The historic Sir Hubert Murray Stadium has recently been acquired by the Government through the compulsory acquisition process. It is believed that the Stadium was previously under a trust deed for the purpose of providing residents a recreational facility but since being used for the staging of the South Pacific Games in the 70's in Port Moresby, the Stadium has never been maintained.

Air Niugini

The acting chief executive of Air Niugini Simon Foo has been confirmed as CEO of the airline.
Foo recently became acting CEO after Wasantha Kumarasiri was appointed managing director of the Independent Public Business Corporation (IPBC), which oversees the operations of state-owned entities such as Air Niugini.

Fishing in PNG

Australian rugby union player Nathan Sharpe retired from international rugby at the end of 2012 as the most capped Super Rugby player in history. The first thing he did after his final match was fly to Papua New Guinea for a fishing trip.

HMAS Tobruk Arrives in Wewak

HMAS Tobruk has arrived in Wewak in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. Over 100 embarked personnel travelling with HMAS Tobruk are bringing medical, dental, veterinary and engineering assistance to the township. Volunteers from HMAS Tobruk's crew will also refurbish sports facilities, war memorials and public buildings.

Qantas Freighter

Qantas Freight has announced it will introduce a weekly freight service between Australia and Papua New Guinea commencing today the 6th of July 2013. The flight between Cairns, Brisbane and Port Moresby will be operated by a Boeing 737-300F aircraft, offering 15 tonnes of cargo capacity each way.

Port Moresby - Townsville

Peter O'Neill says he plans to re-establish direct flights between Townsville and Port Moresby by the end of the year. He says he is going to ask his state airline to start a direct route between Port Moresby and Townsville.

Old Age Pension

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has asked his party to consider a new disability and old age pension by 2016. He also flagged laws to mandate the amount of parliamentary sitting days and to have opponent's list no-confidence motions three months before a vote. For almost 13 years Bougainville residents have sought to hold the mine's parent company, Rio Tinto, responsible for human rights abuses and deaths relating to a blockade.

Asylum Centre

A permanent processing centre for asylum seekers on Manus Island is set to be completed in January. A spokesman for the construction company said the site would be able to house women, children, families and "other vulnerable groups".

THE education standard in Papua New Guinea since 1993 has dropped and continues to do so at an alarming rate. The impact this is having on the country is severe. Frank Evans of Sandaun Provincial Administration stated that the National Department of Education need only look at the results for this year's exams to see there is a crisis.

Four Chinese have been stabbed to death in a bakery in Port Moresby, with one reportedly beheaded and the others dismembered in an attack condemned as "brutal and cowardly" by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill.
