A businessman is accused of taking millions of dollars for government work that has never been completed. He is charged but released on bail. Then, using an Australian issued 457 Visa; he comes to Australia and avoids justice, telling authorities he is too sick to travel back to PNG.

Angau Hit by Termites

Angau hospital chief executive Polapoi Chalau said successive governments had stood by as building after building at the complex in Lae, Morobe province, collapsed because of termites.

Female Army Officers

The first female Papua New Guinea army officers have just completed a rigorous training exercise, with the help of a New Zealand Army Captain Anika Tiplady. Tiplady said the locals were "the friendliest people I've ever met".

Air Niugini Freighter

The National Airline has expanded its freighter services in the country with a maiden flight at the start of September to the Komo Airfield in the Southern Highlands province using its ATR42 aircraft.

State to Own Ok Tedi

Parliament has passed amendments to the OK Tedi Mining Agreement for the State to have 100 per cent ownership of the OK Tedi mine. When making the amendments, Parliament passed a new tenth Supplementary Agreement that will result in the cancellation of PNG Sustainable Development Program (PNGSDP) shares in OTML and the issue of new shares to the State.

Ok Tedi Mine

Following Parliament's amendment to the Immunity Act 2001 OK Tedi mine landowners in Papua New Guinea can now pursue legal actions against BHP in relation to environmental damage caused by the mining operation.

PNG Rugby League

PNG's bid to join the Australian NRL has received a boost, with a PNG team looking likely to join the Queensland Cup. The Queensland Cup has reportedly given an in-principle agreement for a PNG side to join the competition next year, subject to meeting certain conditions.

PNG Boosts Fiji Ties

PNG is determined to further bilateral relations with Fiji to a new level, says its acting high commissioner Hera Kevau. Ms Kevau said PNG and Fiji should utilise the technical co-operation arrangement to develop and increase bilateral co-operation, focusing attention particularly in tourism and mining industries where both countries could share the expertise.

Budget Blowout

Treasury Minister Don Polye has revealed a further K150 million (US$61 million) budget blow-out caused by salary payments to ghost people on government payroll and the fall in commodity prices. Polye said the 2013 Budget projected a fiscal deficit of 7.2 per cent or K2.5 billion for this year but this has blown-up to 7.7 per cent, that is an additional K150 million on top of the original projection of K2.5 billion.

Making Shipping Safer

The head of Papua New Guinea's National Maritime Safety Authority believes updated legislation will make safety standards on passenger vessels more robust and help avoid a repeat of the Rabaul Queen tragedy.

The National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) has confiscated two Manus-based vessels after declaring them unsafe and unseaworthy.

Gordon Market

A new police unit has been launched at the Gordon market as part of UN Women's Safe Cities for Women and Girls program. The police unit will operate from a newly renovated station inside the market perimeter, establishing a permanent police presence there.

Enga Service Station

An electronic high-tech fuel facility with a direct link to InterOil in Port Moresby has recently opened in Wabag, Enga. Operator Rubin Kandiu, who operates the Manu Auto Port in Port Moresby, said it had taken him almost a year to build it at a cost of K3.5 million.

Parliament has passed the Family Protection Bill making domestic violence an offence under PNG laws.

Parliament has made three laws in relation to migration fees, citizenship fees and passport fees. Visitors to PNG will welcome the new fees while citizens applying for passports might feel a bit hard done by.

Mill Disaster

Four workers have lost their lives and 11 others were admitted to the Port Moresby General Hospital with bad burns after an accident at a Veneer Mill in Western province. The accident happened at least two weeks ago but has been kept under wraps until it was revealed in Parliament recently.

Telecommunications

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says services provided by the State's telecommunication company, Telikom, have been below par because of aging infrastructure. He said previous Governments had failed to address and invest in the failing state of the important entity.

American Climate Fund

PNG is among 14 countries under the Strategic Program for Climate Resilience pilot programme to receive funding for projects to help communities battle climate change. PNG will receive US$30 million from donor agencies through the climate investment fund.

Payback Attack

An ethnic clash between the Bubu (an isolated area on the border between Morobe's Garaina district and Central's Goilala district) and Watuts at Bulolo township spilled over to Wau, with two men from Bubu killed in a retaliatory attack.

Police Charged

Two policemen have been charged with 44 counts of armed robbery and 31 counts of unlawful wounding of 75 men in a settlement in Port Moresby on the 26th of May.

Police have arrested a sixth suspect over the attack on Australian and New Zealand trekkers and their porters along the Black Cat Track in the Morobe province.

Tourism Plea

Troubled tourism officials from the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority have pleaded with Australians not to desert the country in the wake of the frenzied machete attack on hikers which left three porters dead. Tourism officials said they are concerned that infrastructure development and work to educate locals about the value of tourism will be undone.
