Warning: PNG web sites seem to come and go. The fact of life is that it costs money to host a web site and there is not much return on the outlay to most businesses in PNG.

If you do click on a link and use the services or even have some comments to make then please contact the people at the relevant web site and let them know so they at least know that someone has gained some value from their efforts. If you are so inclined then please mention that you heard about them from this web site. -- The PNG Gossip Newsletter.

Legal Innovation

Dr Melissa Demian has just spent a month in the country as part of the project 'Legal Innovation in Papua New Guinea', funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council. Dr Demian's research focuses on access to the Village Court system in the southern coastal communities of Milne Bay province. While they are not geographically remote, the largest challenge for these communities is infrastructural.

A Village Court sitting must include a minimum of three magistrates, and in a region with no roads, this means bringing magistrates and disputing parties together in one location by boat. The provincial government has provided boats and outboard motors for the purpose, but disputants must themselves provide the fuel, a prohibitive constraint for rural Papua New Guineans with limited income options and indeed no nearby fuel depot.
