Detention Centres Challenge

The Australian government's offshore refugee policy is facing a new legal challenge that seeks to hold the Australian Commonwealth legally responsible for conditions in its overseas detention camps because the decisions to open and operate them were made in Australia.

Law firm Maurice Blackburn is making the argument on behalf of a 36-year-old detainee who is suing the Australian Commonwealth and contractor G4S after losing an eye during the 2014 Manus Island riots.

State Will Block Porn

After being named as the worst country for viewing pornography over the Internet the government has announced plans to install a filter to stop access to pornographic material.

The top 10 countries currently "searching for pornography" are PNG, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Botswana, Zambia, Ethiopia, Malawi, Uganda, Fiji and Nigeria.

Pilot Standards

Air Niugini still maintains a very high standard for its minimum pilot entry requirement with thorough and comprehensive recruitment processes.

Chief Executive Officer, Simon Foo said this following recent claims in the media that the airline was recruiting cheap expatriate pilots for direct entry captain positions.

Hong Kong Flights

Following a strong increase in passenger and cargo demand, Air Niugini will be adding a third weekly service to Hong Kong, effective 29th March, 2015.

With the third Hong Kong service, it now brings to total, fourteen Air Niugini flights to Asia in a week. Air Niugini operates five flights to Singapore, four to Manila (Philippines), Hong Kong three and a flight each to Denpasar (Indonesia) and Narita (Japan.)

At least 9,000 litres of used oil waste from various Hotels and a business house within Port Moresby has assisted greatly with the Pacific Adventist University's production of biodiesel.

International Women's Day

This Sunday (8th March) is International Women's Day. Make It Happen is the 2015 theme for our http://www.internationalwomensday.com global hub, encouraging effective action for advancing and recognising women.

The needs and rights of young Papua New Guinean women are often overlooked, especially their sexual and reproductive health rights. As a consequence, teenage pregnancy is very high in PNG, with 13% of adolescent girls becoming mothers, often not out of choice.

Philippine Airlines

The inaugural flight by Filipino flag carrier, Philippine Airlines, from Manila to Port Moresby is set to touch down on the 12th of April.

Philippine Airlines has applied for route permission from the Filipino Civil Aeronautics Board to take over unused schedules previously allocated to LCC Cebu Air, offering a 4X-weekly schedule. Currently, the route has only one carrier - Air Niugini - offering direct flights with 3X-weekly service to Manila.





Pacific Games Weather

PNG's Sports and Pacific Games minister, Justin Tkatchenko, is comfortable Port Moresby will be ready to host the Pacific Games later this year, but admits a change in weather could cause problems.

US Helps Milne Bay

US Ambassador Walter North has presented a cheque for US$100,000 (K266,800) to a Conservation International PNG (CIPNG) project on community-based marine environment management in Milne Bay.

The project will assist communities in four islands in Milne Bay to lift their awareness on the impacts of climate change and empower the islanders to engage in local ecosystem management and climate adaptation.
