Pini Ponders Olympic Swansong

33 year old Ryan Pini is considering one last Olympic hurrah in Rio. The former Commonwealth champion retired after competing in the London Games in 2012. He returned to the pool a year later to prepare for last month's Pacific Games in Port Moresby, where he won seven gold medals and was named outstanding male athlete.

Ex PX Q400 Heads for Iceland

Air Iceland is in the process of acquiring three Q400s with the first - an ex-Air Niugini (PX, Port Moresby) machine TF-FXI (cn 4033) - having been ferried to Europe last week. Once certification is complete, the carrier expects to deploy them into domestic service from December onwards.

Two young boys remain hospitalised in New York a month after they suffered serious injuries in a crash that killed a prominent PNG anthropologist.

Aid Fraud Cases Revealed

The Australian foreign affairs department has revealed it investigated the misuse of Australian aid money in several countries including Papua New Guinea. In one case the head of the PNG Law and Justice secretariat gave himself and his staff an unauthorised 23 per cent pay raise worth close to AUD $577,300.

Nautilus Says Zero Waste

The seabed mining company, Nautilus Minerals, says its world first operation to mine in Papua New Guinea's Bismarck Sea will not discharge any waste into the ocean.

Import Ban Supported

The Fresh Produce Development Agency is supporting the decision made by Agriculture and Livestock Minister Tommy Tomscoll to ban the import of some agriculture products into PNG.

Vale David Marsh

David Marsh was a District Commissioner based at Popondetta from 1968. He established the Northern District Radio Station and organised the self-government celebrations.

In 1976, Marsh had a heart attack and was sent back to Sydney, where he then did contract work for the PNG government. He was invited back to Port Moresby for the 25th and 30th independence anniversaries.

Philippine Airlines

Philippine Airlines will launch its direct service to Papua New Guinea on the 25th of October this year.

The flights will be made on Fridays and Sundays, departing Manila at 2:10 am arriving at Port Moresby's Jackson International Airport at 9:20 am. The flights departs Port Moresby at 10:10 am and arrives in Manila at 1:20 pm.

Mt Hagen Cultural Show

This August, just as they have for more than 50 years, PNG tribes gathered to compete at the Mt Hagen Cultural Show.

Ok Tedi Wall Collapse

A section of the Ok Tedi mine collapsed in June, damaging machinery and blocking an access road, but the company insists the fall has nothing to do with the shutdown of operations. Critics of the mine have blamed the PNG government for the mine's problems.

Barike Band has been engaged by Air Niugini to reproduce the video of Wan Kantri to be sung again by Kanai Pineri, with a few additional verses for the 40th Independence Day anniversary.

Hoping to offer support and options to families in danger, a free domestic violence hotline has been launched. The toll-free line offers trauma counselling along with referrals for local support, including safe houses, law enforcement, and legal assistance.

Court Frees Gulf Governor Kavo

A three men Supreme Court bench has quashed the conviction of Gulf Governor Havila Kavo. The high court ruled, trial judge Sir Gibbs Salika erred in fact and law when determining the case on its merit when he sentenced the Gulf leader to jail.
