Sea Kayaker

Take a look at the "Sea Kayaker Sandy" web pages. She is kayaking from Germany to Australia and has made it to PNG where she will spend 4 - 6 months paddling around PNG to get to Daru.

Rio Tinto Gives Up

Rio Tinto has made a decision to quit its stake in Bougainville Copper. Autonomous Bougainville Government President, John Momis, angered by the surprise announcement by the global resources giant, has sought a crisis meeting with Prime Minister Peter O'Neill to discuss "how best to defuse the dangerous situation created by Rio's decision on its shares in BCL."

Bougainville's separatist conflict was the bloodiest in the Pacific since World War II, and ended when the New Zealand government helped broker a truce signed by all factions in 1997.

The PM, Peter O'Neill, has been accused of a conflict of interest when Southwest Air planes were used to fly Southern Highlands province students from UniTech back home.

Miss PNG

The Miss PNG Quest is on again with a scheduled date of the 8th of October, 2016 for the pageant. The first entrant has been announced as Miss IBS (Institute of Business Studies) Samantha Kause. Samantha is a student at IBS studying Business & Management (foundation year). The major sponsor for this year's pageant is National Gaming Control Board.





Houses Burnt in Kimbe

Following the death of a young man in Kimbe, West New Britain province schools have had to close as people associated with the dead youth retaliate. Tucker shops and houses belonging to people from the same province as the suspected killer have been burnt down.

Cocoa

The Department of Trade Commerce & Industry is advancing plans to partner the Cocoa Board, the LR Group of Israel and the people of East Sepik province to develop a large scale Commercial Cocoa Production within the Sepik Plain Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

Biyang Ngayam Festival

Over 500 students attending 22 schools in Lae District, celebrated the Children's Cultural Festival for the first time in Morobe. These young people, regardless of their cultural backgrounds, all dressed up in Morobe traditional costumes, displaying the diversity of the Province.

High Demand for Contraceptive

The North Fly Health Services Development Program (NFHSDP) has reported that there has been an increase in the number of women and teenage girls in the North Fly District in Western Province coming forward to get contraceptive implants as a family planning method.

Doctors & Church Call on PM to Resign

The chorus of student voices calling for the Papua New Guinea Prime Minister to step down has been joined by the doctors' union and church leaders in Morobe. The province is home to the University of Technology where a student was killed and buildings burned following the two-month class boycott.

K1.5 Billion Loan

The Papua New Guinea Government has successfully unsecured syndicated loan, for up to US$500 million (K1.5 billion) arranged by Credit Suisse AG-leading international financial institution. This was officially announced by Treasurer Patrick Pruaitch in a paid advertisement.

Rawson Resources

Rawson Resources has signed an agreement to acquire Moira, which currently has a 100% working interest in Petroleum Prospecting Licence (PPL) 391 in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Rawson also has two other petroleum licence applications under consideration by the PNG regulatory authorities.

Tutumang Against Deputy Opposition Leader

The chair of the Morobe's provincial house of assembly, the Tutumang, has ruled against a call by the Deputy Opposition Leader, Sam Basil, calling for a provincial resolution asking for the Prime Minister to step aside.

Censorship Awareness

The Awareness Team from the Office of Censorship recently visited the Caritas Technical Secondary School to conduct an educational awareness program which is part of an NCD Education Awareness Program that the Office plans to carry out in Terms 2 and 3 of the 2016 academic year.

Agricultural Recovery

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the National Agriculture Research Institute (NARI), with support from the US, EU, and Australian governments have launched a seed distribution programme across drought-hit areas of PNG, benefiting almost 10,000 people.

Over 2,000 households in the provinces of Jiwaka, Enga and Simbu have received seed kits comprising of corn, rice, cassava, vegetable seeds and sweet potato cuttings. This operation is part of IOM's wider climate smart farming and disaster risk reduction building effort in the country, combining training of farmers, agriculture technical guidance, and distribution of agriculture tools and seed kits.

Melanesia Codeshare Commences

Effective 1 July 2016, some of Melanesia's National Carriers; Solomon Airlines, Air Niugini and Air Vanuatu commenced operation of a long awaited codeshare service linking all three destinations.

The new service will operate from Port Moresby to Honiara on Fridays, Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. See the link below for more details.

High Arctic Update

High Arctic Energy Services Inc. has released a statement providing an update on its PNG operations. The company has welcomed the recent announcement that two of its largest customers in PNG have proposed to combine. The two customers have stated that this combination would lead to strong support for the construction of a new LNG project.

Madang Town Market

The opening of the new Madang Town market has been welcomed by Madang MP and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Nixon Philip Duban. The market is an initiative of the Japanese and PNG governments through JICA and National Fisheries Authority (NFA) for the people of Madang.

Basketball Federation

The PNG police department is working in partnership with the PNG Basketball Federation (BFPNG) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to bring BFPNG's Hoops for Health program to life. BFPNG's Hoops for Health (H4H) program is funded by the Australian government as part of the Pacific Sports Partnerships initiative.

City Pharmacy Limited (CPL) has officially opened its ninth and "best" Stop and Shop outlet at the Harbour City in Konedobu. "This shop is of international standards. Its modernized, offers 14,000 thousand different items, has 260 new employees offering their services and has the longest trading hours of any shop in PNG- from 7 am to 9 pm" says CEO Ravi Singh.

Cat Causes Electrical Chaos

Residents in parts of Port Moresby had to endure a power outage after a cat was electrocuted at the Kone power sub-station this then affected the system at the Kanudi main power station resulting in the power outage.

Remembering Seafarers

National seafarers who passed away were remembered this morning by fellow men and women from within the maritime industry. Though the industry is still in its infant stage in the country, Chief Executive Officer of the National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA), Paul Unas, said the industry needs more manpower.
