Air Niugini has ended the year on a high note with the launching of its latest subsidiary - the Business Travel Centre. The airline was also able to present a dividend cheque of K20 million to the Government.

Inflation Threat

An Australian economist says the Papua New Guinea central bank is risking serious inflation by effectively printing money. The Australian National University's Paul Flanagan, who used to work with the PNG Treasury, says the Bank of PNG is buying up surplus government securities that could not find a buyer on the open market.

Prouds Celebrates 18 Months

Fijian retailer Prouds is celebrating its '18-month anniversary' since it expanded its operations and opened its first overseas duty free shop at Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

The stores are currently featured 'prominently' in the airport's arrival and departure areas after they were originally opened by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill in July 2015.

Tourism City

The Government has indicated strong support for Paga Hill Developments Construction of a major Tourism city on the outskirts of Port Moresby City. The Government has agreed to provide support in terms of necessary incentives to speed up the process. Tourists will be able to access war relics, and a breath taking view of Port Moresby's coastline.

Troops to Protect Gas Project

The government gas announced that it will deploy military personnel to stop "violence" near the country's biggest resources installation, the Exxon-Mobil Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project.

New Aussie Consul

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has announced the appointment of Mr Paul Murphy as Australia's Consul-General in Lae. The Consulate-General will boost Australia's presence in PNG and bolster the growing trade and investment relationship between the two countries. It will also offer consular and other services to the thousands of Australians living in the area.

New NZ High Commissioner

New Zealand Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, has announced the appointment of Sue Mackwell as High Commissioner in PNG. As High Commissioner, Ms Mackwell will be responsible for overseeing our aid and development effort in Papua New Guinea, which is New Zealand's largest development assistance programme

Grade 10 Results

The PNG Education Department has announced the Grade 11 Selection list for 2017. This list has been made possible by the Grade 11 selection team of the General Education Services Division with the support of their Wing the Provincial services and all others who have contributed in this exercise. Gun Amnesty in PNG

Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, has announced a temporary amnesty for the surrender of unlicensed firearms. He said the amnesty will run until the 28th of February, and will allow the surrender of unlicensed firearms to local police.

Police Commissioner Gari Baki has confirmed the death of Gulf Provincial Police Commander, Chief Superintendent, Silas Wayagure.

Police Commissioners in Jail

Supreme Court has acquitted the former police commissioner Geoffrey Vaki of two counts of contempt of court and quashed his jail sentence. Meanwhile, another former police commissioner Sir Tom Kulunga will serve seven months at Bomana jail after the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal against contempt convictions.

Milne Bay

Samarai-Murua MP Gordon Wesley says he has talked to Prime Minister Peter O'Neill about removing Milne Bay police commander Superintendent Joseph Morehari because of the breakdown in law and order in the province.

Yokomo Softball Club

The Yokomo Softball Club was formed in the early 1970's in Port Moresby. The club has recently announced a sponsorship deal with Lamana. The Club has grown from a small family club, to now being on the national front.

A new bridge has been opened at Kasing in the Nawaeb district of Morobe province thanks to funding from the National Government.

A Defence Force call out into Hela province, to end the continuous tribal fighting and general lawlessness, has started. The Defence Force is being assisted by members of the police force.

Church Contributions Recognised

A new Office of Religion has been established under PNG's Department of Community Development, Youth and Religion. Community Development Minister Delilah Gore said the Office of Religion was established as the Government recognised that churches contributed to the country's development.

Two Suspects Captured

Two suspects, involved in the K1.2 million Robbery at the Jacksons Airport in Port Moresby, have been captured in Rabaul.

Asylum Seeker Riot

Asylum seekers held at a detention centre in PNG briefly took control of two compounds and expelled guards following the death of a refugee who fell ill at the centre. Senior Sergeant Thomas Lelepo, from Lorengau Police Station on Manus Island, said guards at the Manus Island regional processing centre were expelled by residents over the death of a resident.

West Sepik

According to the West Sepik Governor, Amkat Mai, the people of the West Sepik province will gain access to jobs and economic opportunities from two planned industrial parks in the province. The Governor said although the similarly large-scale Pacific Marine Industrial Zone along the coast in Madang has never really got off the ground after many years in the planning, the parks planned for his province were different.

Madang Potholes

The Public have raised concerns about the number of potholes around Madang Town. In a recent interview with the Madang Governor, Jim Kas, he states that he is fully aware of the public's concerns about the road conditions, and assured that his government is ready to prioritise in that area, come next year.

Milne Bay Budget

The Milne Bay provincial assembly has approved a budget of over K200 million for the 2017 fiscal year - an increase of K6 million from 2016.

The National Research Institute (NRI) of PNG is calling for applications for 2017 Research cadetships. The institute is looking for candidates who are passionate about the future of the country and who will enjoy doing research and solving problems in the public policy to make a difference.

Hope After the Drought

Every now and then, Mother Nature reminds us of her palpable force-the recent El Niño was one of those reminders. When this phenomenon hit the Highlands Region of PNG, it unleashed an unsympathetic weather change, bringing droughts and frosts to the country. Many were unprepared to lose subsistence farming, the 'backbone' of societies in the country, as a major source of income. One can imagine the devastating impact this had on crop production and, in turn, on communities' food security.

PNG Hockey

The PNG Hockey Federation has announced the staging of the 2018 Oceania U18 hockey youth qualifiers, after winning to bid to host the event. The championship will be in April of 2018 however, the actual timing will be determined by the OHF Competition Committee in consultation with PNGHF.
