Air Niugini Cup Launched

Air Niugini has sponsored a perpetual Air Niugini Cup to be played for between the SP Hunters and Townsville Blackhawks. "The inaugural Air Niugini Cup will be played for by the two teams in Port Moresby this weekend," Air Niugini CEO Simon Foo said. "The Cup will be played for on an annual basis and will encourage our fellow country folk living in and around Townsville, supporters of the Blackhawks as well as the business and corporate community to travel to Port Moresby.

Rugby League in PNG

You don't have to spend much time in Papua New Guinea to realise that the country is obsessed with rugby league. The atmosphere in Port Moresby on a State of Origin night could rival the most devout regions of New South Wales or Queensland. Rugby league is considered PNG's national sport. In a country of eight million people and 800 languages it has a unique power to bring Papua New Guineans together across cultural divides. Rugby league also has significant untapped potential to build the relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Land Group Mistreated

A customary land group in Port Moresby has accused the government of turning a deaf year to native land issues in the city as part of a land-grabbing conspiracy that involves all its agencies.

Darts Championships

The PNG Darts Federation has endorsed Alotau as the host of the upcoming national club championships in September. PNGDF president John Kuaru said the championships would be held during the Independence weekend from the 8th through to the 18th of September.

Illegal Poultry Threatens Industry

An investigation has begun to establish how frozen raw chicken was smuggled into Papua New Guinea from south-east Asia, raising fears of a biosecurity threat. The President of the Poultry Industry Association, Chris Prestwood, says there are no avian diseases in PNG, and for the sake of the country's poultry farmers, it needs to stay that way.

The Goroka branch of the China-Papua New Guinea Friendship Association has presented new police uniforms and body vests to the two police taskforces in Goroka.

Vale Ezekiel Anisi

The sitting Parliament Member for Ambunti-Drekikir, Ezekiel Anisi has collapsed and died in Port Moresby. Mr Anisi was the youngest MP to be elected in the last national election and this was his first Parliamentary term.

Ijape Honoured

Former Goroka MP the late Mathias Ijape has been described as a "true leader and shining star" of Goroka district. Paying tribute at his funeral, Eastern Highlands Governor Julie Soso said: "All the rural roads in Goroka district sealed by late Ijape when he was serving as Goroka MP from 1987 to 1997 are now left to deteriorate. He was a real leader for the people and a shining star."

A fire has destroyed a double storey dormitory at Port Moresby Technical College. The occupants of the dormitory were in class when the fire started, leaving them with nothing except what they had with them.

Former Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta has expressed his concern at social media pictures of heavily armed foreign mercenaries patrolling the streets of Port Moresby before they suddenly left the country.

Air Niugini Emergency

An Air Niugini flight from Kavieng (Fokker F100 / P2-ANC / PX-275) had to do an emergency landing back at Kavieng shortly after take-off due to a technical fault. The crew reported smoke in the cockpit. The airline management had assured, the aircraft would be back in service. "Safety is always of paramount importance in Air Niugini's operations.

PX Maintenance

Air Niugini has plans in place for the construction of a high maintenance facility so its fleet are all serviced in the country. CEO Simon Foo announced during the Australia-PNG Business Council Forum in Port Moresby that the initiative will see more jobs, build capacity of aircraft engineers and retain foreign exchange in the country.

Six international cocoa experts are set to participate at the Inaugural cocoa of excellence show which started yesterday 25th of May and finishes on the 27th of May in Kokopo-East New Britain.

Two WWII Bombers

Two American B-25 bombers, which went missing during the Second World War, were recently documented under water near PNG. Project Recover, an organization which aims to locate and survey missing aircraft from the Second World War, documented the bombers.

Clinic Has No Medicine

Over 20 people in a village in Central province have died within the space of two years due to a lack of medicine. Ward Member for Paramana village along the Aroma Coast, Kiki Geno, is appealing to authorities for medicine to be supplied for the aid post that has remained neglected for two years now.

Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium

The Sir Ignatius Kilage stadium was first built in 1990 for the 1991 South Pacific Games. In 2016, the stadium underwent an extensive restoration in preparation for the 2016 Papua New Guinea games. Despite millions of Kina being pumped into the rehabilitation of the stadium the facility still does not meet international standards.

Modilon General Hospital

Madang's Modilon General Hospital will scale down its operations effective today - Friday 26th of May 2017 - due to dire financial constraints it is experiencing. An irate resident and private medical practitioner Dr John Mackerel has expressed his grave displeasure stating "So much for the government's free health care" service.

Elections

The unresolved issue of unpaid service providers from 2012 and 2013 may come back to haunt the Electoral Commission in this year's election, Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato said recently. He said this as service providers continued to flock outside the commission headquarters in Port Moresby demanding that they be paid. The service providers claim they are owed K70 million for providing various services throughout the country during the 2012 national election and the 2013 local level government election.

Stang Girl's Training School

A new girls' dormitory at the Stang Girl's Training School in the Markham district, Morobe province has been named after a long-time Lae resident and businessman, Benjamin Woo. The dormitory was built through the church partnership program with the government where Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea has continued to strengthen.

Biogas Powers Kimbe

New Britain Palm Oil is supplying electricity from biogas to the people of Kimbe through a partnership with PNG Power. Biogas typically refers to a mixture of different gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter, in this case methane is produced by the palm oil mill waste.

MP Attacked

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tobias Kulang has condemned a recent attack on him and his team in Kundiawa, Chimbu Province. Mr Kulang who is the current Kundiawa-Gembogl MP said in a statement that four of his vehicles and a number of people had sustained injuries in the attack.

Robbers Escape by Sea

Madang police are yet to gather leads to the recent spate of armed robberies in Madang where the preferred means of escape has been by sea. Madang's Provincial Police Commander, Jacob Singura, says they are working on setting up a water policing unit which will help curb the high crime rate.
