Trilateral Malaria Project

The trilateral malaria project by Australia, China and PNG sets out to eliminate malaria in the country, according to Central Public Health Laboratory director Dr Evelyn Lavu. Lavu said through the partnership, the Australian government committed K8 million which would be used to support Australian, Chinese and PNG scientists to collaborate on malaria diagnosis and research.

Konedobu Clinic

The Bank South Pacific (BSP) has donated two water tanks with a combined volume of 10,000 litres to the Lawes Road clinic at Konedobu in the Moresby-south electorate. The clinic serves more than 16,000 people from Konedobu and the surrounding communities of Badili, Koki, Town, Hanuabada, Tatana and the Baruni villages.

Election Concerns

One woman has every reason to be concerned for whom to vote and what will become of her and women like herself once the election fever dies out and leaders get elected into Parliament. Nancy Paul, an informal vendor from Erava in the Southern Highlands Province makes her living selling fried eggs.

Dry Weather Expected in NGI

According to the National Weather Service Assistant Director, Jimmy Gomoga, some areas of the New Guinea Islands region will experience dry weather in the next few weeks because of a change in weather patterns.

Star Optical Clinic

The Star Optical Clinic at Gerehu accepts patients from all over Port Moresby. The Clinic, located at the Gerehu General Hospital, has been in operation since last year offering direct optical and optometric services.

School Vaccinations

According to Boroko Rotary Club president Russell Jackson, the first phase of cervical cancer vaccination in primary schools in the National Capital District was a success. He said through Rotary International's support and the Boroko club's own funding, K986,000 has been raised, which was enough to vaccinate 28,000 girls in Port Moresby's three electorates.

Aviation Industry Competition

PNG Air chairman and chief executive officer Muralee Siva says competition is good and in the case of aviation, in a country of seven to eight million people, choice is a must.

"Monopoly does not drive change, they encourage complacency. Change which benefits all is driven by competition but competition requires the market to actively support this concept for it to succeed," he remarked.

Bebego's Murderer Sentenced

A former public servant was yesterday sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of his colleague in the National Capital District three years ago. The court found Pokea guilty of the murder of Dennis Taylor Bebego at the Foreign Affairs Department office in Waigani on the 5th of July 2014. The Waigani National Court, presided by Justice Nicholas Kirriwom, ordered that Billy Sapsi Pokea, from Sumea village in Mendi District, Southern Highlands, serve 22 years at the Buiebi prison in Mendi. The two years and 11 months he spent in custody at Bomana prison in Port Moresby were deducted from the sentence.

Mobile Squad Removed

PNG Blogs reports that PM O'Neill has intervened in the election process in Pangia after he called Police Commissioner Gary Baki to personally remove a Mobile Police unit. The unit, usually stationed in Wabag, was helping with security in the Prime Minister's electorate of Ialibu Pangia.

Moresby Elections

Police in Port Moresby have arrested the city's election manager for carrying a large amount of cash, on the same day voting in the capital was suspended. The PNG Electoral Commission said the vote had been delayed because it did not pay the workers their "camping allowances".

Current PM, Peter O'Neill, is hoping voters will overlook economic problems and corruption controversies to give him a second term.

Gamato on Elections

The PNG Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato says the elections are not a failure as records show that more than 50 percent of the voter population in districts that voted have cast their votes. Flag Designer Abandoned

PNG flag designer, Susan Karike Huhume left the world three months ago but she is yet to be laid to rest; her body is still waiting at Dove Funeral Home in Port Moresby. The family of late Susan are devastated; they have been let down by the Prime Minister's Department who promised a State Funeral for the flag designer.

Lost Common Roll Names

Polling across the country commenced on Saturday 24th June and was set to end on Saturday 8th July. One issue that appears to be common among many polling stations across the country is that many voters cannot locate their names on the common roll even if they have previously voted in the same electorate and at the same polling station.

Oro Homes Razed

A series of "pay-back" attacks has left 17 homes devastated in the Haena hamlet just outside Sairope village in Northern (Oro) Province. According to Officer in Charge of the Internal Investigations Unit, detective senior inspector Charles Winuan, 13 of the homes were set alight by officers from both the Popondetta Highway Patrol and PNG Correctional Services.

Three Moresby teams are all geared up for the PNG women's basketball championship in Port Moresby. It is toss-up between Port Moresby, National Capital District and Lae as the favourites for the crown while Daru are the dark horses.

K1m Catering Deal

Landowner companies Raibus Limited and National Catering Services (NCS) have signed a K1 million agreement to provide catering services to the Madang-based nickel and cobalt mine. The joint venture collaboration took about a year to conclude, to provide services for the RamuNiCo-managed project sites at Kurumbukari mine in the Bundi LLG, and Basamuk refinery in Rai Coast.

PNG Air to be ATR Operator

Regional airline, PNG Air, has taken delivery of its 6th brand new ATR aircraft. PNG Air is continuing its plans to phase out the Dash 8 aircraft it has been operating and to become 100 per cent ATR operator in the long term, improving its operating economics.

Preparations for the Goroka Cultural Show are underway. The Goroka Show sponsors meeting was held at the Bird of Paradise hotel in Goroka recently. The chairlady of Goroka Show Mrs Keryn Hargreaves told more than 10 sponsors for this year's show that preparations are under way, with all the different activities planned.

Departure Tax

A Madang tour operator has raised concerns over the revised departure tax, which came into effect on the 1st of January this year and has asked for clarification from the government. The fees were revised from K30 to K114 (US$9 - US$35).

Legatees Train for Trek

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has joined with Legacy to prepare 26 Junior Legatees to trek the historic Kokoda Track. The group will set off on the Kokoda trek from Popondetta in the Oro Province of PNG on 28 August, which falls in Legacy Week.
