Remember that this mailing list is mainly meant for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time, is currently worth somewhere around 43 - 44 United States cents but varies on a daily basis.

If you are really keen on finding out what the Kina is worth a currency converter for most world currencies can be located at http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/moni.html

For those who are not so familiar with the geography of Papua New Guinea I suggest taking a look http://maps.expedia.com and then click on the find a map option. Go to this link for a quick start to a link to a map of Port Moresby. http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pom-map.html

Also remember that the accuracy of the information in this newsletter should not be relied upon - it is, after all, a gossip newsletter.

Recommended Site

Visit the PNG section of the World Wide Web Virtual Library at the following URL http://coombs.anu.edu.au/specialproj/png/wwwvl-png.html from there you will find a whole lot of information on Papua New Guinea.

Madang Governor

Jim Kas was found guilty of endangering the free and safe usage of an aircraft. He was sentenced to four years jail. Any politician who is sent to jail for longer than nine months is no longer qualified to remain as a member of parliament.

PNG Made Trade Fare

The PNG Made Trade Fare was a hit as far as the officials are concerned. Security was very tight and any troublemakers were soon whisked away.

Military Coup

Rumours of a military coup spread like wildfire last week. Brigadier General Singirok has denied all knowledge of any such coup but Bernard Narokobi has said he will reveal all in an inquiry. Rumour has it that Bill Skate would be installed as the president if the coup was to eventuate.

Domestic Airfares

Air fares within the country have risen by up to 12 percent. The increase has been attributed to rising costs and an unfavourable exchange rate.

Air Niugini

Apart from celebrating the 25th year of Air Niugini the management of PX have snared a whole buggy load of golfers for a charter flight around a hole or two. Names such as Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods will be shown documentaries and other PNG "propaganda" inflight between several rounds of the Johnny Walker Super Golf Series.
