Remember that this mailing list is mainly meant for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time in this newsletter, is currently worth around 29 - 28.5 United States cents but varies on a daily basis.

If you are really keen on finding out what the Kina is worth a currency converter for most world currencies can be located at http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/moni.html

Want to find out more about Papua New Guinea? Try searching at http://www.michie.net/pnginfo and http://www.michie.net/png_faqs. The PNG Business and Tourism Directory located at http://www.pngbd.com is also an excellent place to look for PNG information.

For those who are not so familiar with the geography of Papua New Guinea I suggest taking a look http://maps.expedia.com and then click on the find a map option. Go to this link for a quick start to a link to a map of Port Moresby. http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pom-map.html

Also remember that the accuracy of the information in this newsletter should not be relied upon - it is, after all, a gossip newsletter.

Wau Cannabis

Two women have been questioned by police in Wau over cannabis plants found growing in amongst food crops near Wau. Police sources have revealed that the owner of the garden had been growing and selling cannabis for some time. The garden was discovered after police pursued a couple of suspects allegedly involved in the robbery of a gold buyer earlier on.

Taro Theft

The theft of taro in Lae has earnt a young man a sentence of 12 years in jail with hard labour. The thief also had a police badge, and other stolen items in his possession. The same man had also stolen five wooden posts that another person had set into the ground during the day to build a house. The posts were later found at the accused house.

Stranded Coffee

Coffee, destined for export, has been stranded in rural Morobe due to the poor road conditions. Thousands of bags of coffee are involved. The poor road conditions and poor weather have meant that over 13,000 bags are stranded

Scout Association

The acting scout chief commissioner, Michael Pearson, has welcomed the new chief commissioner of the Scout Association and urged him to carry on the work of the association. The new commissioner, Captain Sere Kala, said that he wants to promote the scouts in areas where the less fortunate youth are based. Captain Sere was sworn into office on the day the scouts and guides celebrate their annual founders day.

Sorcerer

A person suspected of sorcery has been tortured to death in Kimbe, West New Britain province. The elderly man was suspected of having killed several people in Morobe province, West New Britain province and New Ireland province using magic. Police have detained several people suspected of killing the alleged sorcerer. The man, from Boana in Morobe province, was passing through West New Britain from his home in New Ireland when he was killed.

Taliban Attack

A PNG owned helicopter has been attacked by terrorists in Afghanistan killing the Australian pilot and wounding three others. The helicopter, owned by Pacific Helicopters in Goroka, was being used to help deliver aid to the troubled country.

UPNG Hack

A student from the University of PNG appears to have managed to hack into the student records database used by the university and alter his failed grades to "B". At the stage it is not know how the student managed to alter his grades but an investigation is underway.

Both the University of Goroka and UPNG have started to enforce a string sense of discipline onto students. Both universities hope to regain a reputation of being premier universities in the South Pacific.

Rural Development Bank

The Managing Director of the Rural Development Bank, Wai Kitts, has been suspended for a recent controversy over the carrying of a firearm onboard an Air Niugini flight from Port Moresby to Singapore. A committee has been set up to probe how the pistol managed to get past airport security and onto the flight.

PNG Law

A PNG Judge has blasted a law firm for not preparing a bill to a customer correctly. The customer had asked the firm for a correct bill but the law firm instead took the matter to court. The presiding Judge said that the action by the law firm was clearly an abuse of the process of the court. He went on to say that a lawyer cannot sue for recovery of legal fees if a proper bill of costs has not been submitted to the client. He also slammed the high cost of legal fees being charged by the firm.

UniTech - Lae

Several single women working at the University of Technology (UniTech) in Lae and living in single quarters at the UniTech campus have been evicted from their living quarters for allegedly not taking part in a work parade scheduled during working hours outside their living quarters. The ladies made an unsuccessful appeal through the courts but were told to go back and sort it out with the University.

Ruatoka Primary School

The Ruatoka Primary School in the Rigo District of Central province was established in 1961 and it has just received some government assistance. It has operated for over 40 years without any help from the government. The Governor of Central has handed over a cheque for K67,000 to the school.

Horse Race Machines

The Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has instructed the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) to rid the city of the horse race machines currently being blamed for many students staying away from school. The NCDC has been given 14 days to comply with the PAC order. Over 1000 machines owned by five or six operators can be found in corners of shops enticing children to play the horse race game.

Three people from Fujian Province in China have been caught by Customs attempting to bring horse racing machine parts into the country on their return to the country at Jackson's International Airport. The Internal Revenue Commission following a public outcry has banned the importation of horse racing machines and parts.

Rewards

The East New Britain Chamber of Commerce president has said that possibly the way to capture the top ten criminals in the province would be to offer substantial rewards for their capture. By offering rewards it is hoped that the people that are presently allowing these criminals to wander around the province and helping to feed them would think twice about assisting them.

Air Niugini

Already struggling to make ends meet because it can only fly its planes during daylight hours due to the failure of Civil Aviation to maintain the various navigational aids around the country now has to contend with bad weather. An F28 destined for Buka had to divert to Rabaul and refuel recently due to bad weather before continuing on to Buka after the weather cleared. Port Moresby's Jackson's Airport, one of the few airports in the country with suitable navigational gear for night landings, is not without its problems however. On a recent trip back into Moresby the plane I was in had to abort a final approach to the airport because the control tower lost all power and the airport was plunged into darkness. Luckily the power and computers came back on and the flight was only delayed for a few minutes. Rumours have it that bigger planes than what I was in have also had problems. Tropical cyclones around the Cairns region (the alternate airport for Moresby) have meant that a suitable alternate airport is many, many hours away from Moresby.

Just imagine how much money Air Niugini could make if it could fly its aeroplanes for 18 hours a day like other airlines in other countries are able to do. The airline just making a small profit this year would be making heaps and might be able to lower its airfares accordingly. Even the Boeing 767 doesn't get worked very hard when compared with a similar B767 going from Sydney to Los Angeles and back in more or less the same day flying non stop for 10 or more hours at a time.

International Flight Attendants

Air Niugini, expecting strike action by its flight attendants, has advertised overseas for experienced Boeing 767 flight attendants. It has also advertised within the country for people with experience and qualifications to apply for temporary contracts with the company. Many people have said that the advertisements have inflamed the already tense situation with the flight attendants.

Palm Oil

It is expected that the export of palm oil this year will remain steady if the world market prices remain high. The progress of palm oil exports still remains dependent on weather conditions, and good road conditions. Many roads are almost impassable and many bridges re past their useful lifespan with little or no maintenance being carried out on them for years.

Grassroots Bank

It is expected that the opening of a grass roots bank will be announced during a national grassroots convention to be held at Kokopo between the 12th and 16th of July. East New Britain Governor, Leo Dion, has promised K200,000 toward the opening of the bank. The bank will be operating on the micro-finance policy of the Bank of PNG. The bank will be 100 percent home grown with most of the money coming from the people to run the bank. It is anticipated that the bank will provide normal banking services the same as other commercial banks.

PNG Business and Tourism Directory

PNG Business and Tourism Directory -- http://www.pngbd.com -- This web site is probably the most useful stopping point for anyone interested in finding out more about PNG. Many businesses use the website on a daily basis to find out the exchange rate as the rates on the website are updated by the banks on a regular basis throughout the working day but the website offers more than that. The best way to find out what it has is to visit the site.

Drug Search

The University of PNG has received K100,000 to search for diverse plant and marine life for drugs. This is a strange move when the Institute of Medical Research in Goroka has the necessary scientists, analysts, etc to do the job whereas the Faculty of Medicine at UPNG would seem to be better suited to the necessary job of training medical students to become health workers. The University of Utah, College of Pharmacy recently handed over the money to the Executive Dean of the UPNG School of Medicine and Health Sciences. The project may give students the necessary grounding to do proper research work. Over 200 samples have been collected to date and sent to the University of Utah for analysis. Does this mean that the medical students are being used only to collect the plants?

LPV

Awareness programs are being carried out to inform voters about LPV - Limited Preferential Voting around the country in areas where by elections are due to be held. A successful trial of LPV has already been tried in the Abau by election and now an awareness program is being held for the Anglimp South Wahgi by-election in the Western Highlands.

Motor Vehicle Regisitration

After many years of perservering with a separate Registration and compulsory third parety insurance stickers for motor vehicles the Motor Vehicles Insurance Liimted have combined the two into an all in one combined sticker. The previous registrations stickers were a transfer decal type and took a little bit of effort to stick successfully to the windscreeen of the vehicle. The new design is a simple peel off the backing label and afix to the windscreen type.

After the tragic acident on the Sogeri road where a three-tonne truck fitted out to carry passengers rolled back and overturned many times killing 19 passengers on board the police and road saftey traffic authority have mounted many random safety checks in Port Moresby.

Tourists

Eighty-Eight tourists aboard a privately charted jet have recently spent two days in the country chasing birds of paradise and viewing the Sepik River. Each passenger on board the luxury tourist jet has paid US$125,000 for the privilege of being able to go on the round the world tour. The tourists have said just seeing the many birds of paradise has made the whole trip worthwhile.

East New Britain AIDS

The total number of AIDS cases reported in East New Britain Province has been listed as being 62 - 32 females and 30 males but the real number is not known. It is thought that there may be as many as 100 cases in the province.

Bougainville

The Japanese Government has funded the construction of a two-storey double classroom and toilet block at the Hahela Primary School on Buka Island to the value of K200,000. This is part of the Japanese Governments contribution towards the growth of education in PNG.

PNG Physiotherapists

Two PNG citizens have recently returned from Fiji where they undertook a two-year training course to become qualified physiotherapists. Both people were already working as volunteer physios before they left for Fiji. The cost of the training was funded by Dutch Agency - Cordaid.

Pangu Pati

Chris Haiveta has been ousted as the leader of PANGU Pati. Pangu is a long running political party once headed by Sir Michael Somare. Sir Rabbie Namaliu has taken over the reigns of the party. He has had previous experience as the leader of the party as he lead the party when he was Prime Minister from 1988 to 1992. Chris Haiveta was not present at the vote to oust him and of course says he is still the leader of the party in typical PNG politics fashion.

Travel Show

Don't forget the Lukim PNG Nau Travel show. It is being held from the 5th to the 7th of March at the Holiday Inn in Port Moresby.
