Anti-Fraud Office

The Police Commissioner, Gary Baki, has announced he will reopen the country's anti-corruption office after he controversially closed it many weeks ago.

Rugby League

PNG has had its first win over Fiji 24-22. Fiji had chances to get back into the game in the second half but either came up with a dropped ball or conceded a penalty to let PNG off the hook.

PM Will NOT Step Down

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says he will not step down and calls on university students to go back to class and resume normalcy at their various campuses. Students have been boycotting classes for almost a week now. A UPNG student representative council member said their stance is not to change the Government or tell Prime Minister Peter O'Neill to resign. They are simply asking him to respect the integrity of the office and step aside to allow for questioning.

U20 Soccer Camp

The United States Under-20 Women's National Team will travel to Papua New Guinea from 21st of May 21 to the 1st of June for a training camp and matches, with University of Notre Dame standouts Sabrina Flores and Natalie Jacobs earning roster spots for what will serve as a test run ahead of the 2016 U-20 FIFA Women's World Cup, which will be held at the same site.

Governor Agiru Farewelled

Close to a thousand mourners, including members of the public, dignitaries, members of parliament, statutory heads and heads department flocked to the Sir John Guise Stadium to pay their last respects to late Hela Governor Anderson Agiru at his funeral service.

Internet Filtering Policy

A one day workshop organised by the PNG Censorship Board in collaboration with NICTA has been held recently in Port Moresby to deliberate on ideas that should be taken into consideration for an Internet Filtering Policy within the country.

Central Market Project

Women of Rigo District are calling on the Central and National Capital District governments to resolve issues pertaining to the Central Market Project in Boroko, Port Moresby, and have the market completed and opened for use. The women highlighted the need for market facilities to be made available for them; adding that Central farmers are often intimidated and harassed by persons of other ethnicities, at existing markets in Port Moresby.

PNGRFL Thanks Supporters

The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League Board has thanked the overwhelming support from every Papua New Guinean supporters rallied behind the PNG Kumuls in the Pacific Test. Chairman Sandis Tsaka acknowledge the PNGRFL sponsors, partners and stake-holders towards the PNG LNG Kumuls following their two point victory over the Fiji Batis in the Pacific Test in Sydney.

Judge Wants Case Dropped

Supreme Court judge, Sir Bernard Sakora, has filed a submission for his case to be dismissed. Sir Bernard's lawyer, Loani Henao, says there was no direction from the public prosecutor to prosecute his client, and his warrant was not signed by a magistrate.

Asylum Review Could Take Months

Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said the fate of nearly 900 men held in an Australian detention centre in PNG is unlikely to be determined for several months. The Manus Island detainees are a headache Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull can ill afford as opinion polls show his Liberal-led Coalition government running neck-and-neck with the centre-left Labour opposition.

Asylum Day Release

PNG has relaxed restrictions on nearly 900 asylum seekers held on behalf of Australia, allowing them to leave the detention centre during the day but a rights group dismissed the move as "window-dressing".

2019 Pacific Games

The Pacific Games Council (PGC) has unanimously approved extending the amount of sports Australia and New Zealand compete in at the 2019 edition of the event in Tonga.

Pasifika TV

Papua New Guineans will continue to enjoy the many interesting television programs from New Zealand in the new channel Pasifika TV made possible through the Pacific Broadcasting initiative. The Initiative was announced by the NZ prime minister last year and since then it continues to improve program content for viewers.

PNG High Commissioner to Fiji

The New PNG High Commissioner to Fiji, Lucy Blanche-Lee Badina Bogari, has been welcomed by the Fijian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola. Ms Bogari thanked Ratu Inoke for the warm Fijian welcome she received and said she looked forward to her assignment in Fiji.

Air Niugini

Air Niugini has advised the traveling public that the airline's two Boeing 767 aircraft are undergoing scheduled maintenance overseas - effective from the 12th of May 2016. Air Niugini is leasing a Boeing 767-300 series aircraft from Euroatlantic Airways of Portugal to cater for the travelling public while the other aircraft are away.

Tsunami-like Waves Hit Lihir

Locals in the mining township of Lihir in New Ireland province were thrown into confusion recently when 'high waves' struck the island just before lunchtime.

An officer from the GeoHazard and Physical Observatory office in Port Moresby, Mathew Moihoi told Loop PNG they confirmed receiving reports of the incident in Lihir today however, they are still unsure of what caused the event. Moihoi said the GeoHazard and Physical Observatory office in Port Moresby as well as the Rabaul Volcanology Observatory office did not pick up any alerts of an earthquake which might have triggered the tsunami.

The National Mask Festival

The National Mask Festival is the main forum where Papua New Guinea's mask culture is showcased by performers from all over the country where both common and rare masks are displayed. Three major categories of mask which will be displayed during the festival: the spirit masks, the ancestor masks and the Tumbuan masks. In accordance with tradition, the Kinavai will be staged at Kokopo Beach at dawn featuring the Tubuans. The Kinavai ceremony marks the opening of the Mask Festival.

PNG Embassies and High Commissions are struggling to operate. Opposition Leader Sam Basil has called on the foreign affairs Minister to explain what the government will be doing to keep them functioning in light of reports that they have no more funds to operate.

Thirteen PNG Defence Force soldiers charged with mutiny have submitted to the Bomana National Court that they did not have a case to answer to and that their conduct was not a mutiny but mere insubordination.
