Kerema Secondary School

Kerema Secondary School has had to resort to asking for parents for pay fees to the school as donations to ensure the school remains open while it waits to receive the next trench of Tuition Fee Free (TFF) funds from the government. As a boarding school, the school needs K7,000 per week to ensure 229 boarding students are fed. The school has a total population of 458 students.

Adventist Review reports over 800 people have been baptised after a three-week evangelistic series in PNG, and more baptisms are expected next month.

PM Will Not Resign

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has told protesting university students calling for his resignation he will not be stepping aside. A 34-year-old man from Pomio district in East New Britain has been sentenced to 22 years jail with hard labour for raping a girl younger than seven years old.

Madang Coffee

Over 500 local coffee farmers from the rural Simbai LLG in Madang, urgently need a serviceable road. Police officers and concerned residents at the Tasion Barracks in Port Moresby have stopped a road construction running through their area for health and safety reasons. Refugees Locked Up

Two refugees were bashed by locals and locked up after a recent booze and drug-fuelled rampage on Manus Island. Provincial police commander Acting Superintendent David Yapu has ordered a crackdown on crimes by "foreigners" after a News Corp investigation revealed an illicit black market trade in Australian taxpayer-funded cigarettes, drug and alcohol abuse and sex with local girls.

Detainee Black Market

A reward scheme-turned-black market trade between detainees on Manus Island and town locals has left Australian taxpayers footing a $1.5 million bill each week. According to a detainee the 900 asylum seekers on Manus Island are rewarded with several free packets of cigarettes when they go on beach excursions, fishing trips or take language classes. Many then travel into the main township of Lorengau and sell the cigarette packets for up to $10 each, using the money to buy marijuana, alcohol and electronics.

The PNG Business Coalition for Women is collaborating with 3 of the largest companies in PNG to adopt Gender Smart Safety. New Britain Palm Oil Limited, Oil Search Limited, and St Barbara's Simberi Gold Company Limited are participating in a new training program that will help them improve safety for women on their worksites.

The National Department of Health is seeking to improve and develop the Radiotherapy Centre located at Lae Angau Memorial Hospital. The current equipment at the facility is very old and there are issues of equipment failure, quality and safety.

Cash is Critical in PNG

The PNG Trade Union Congress believes that cash flow issues in the country are more critical than any other issue at hand and is calling on relevant agencies to address the issue here and now. PNGTUC General Secretary John Paska made this remark amid on-going boycotts by tertiary students and attempts by civil society groups to protest in support of students for the PM to step down.
