Ethics Code Needs Catchup

The president of PNG's media council says there is a need for the country’s media ethics codes to be revised, Radio NZ International reports. Alex Rheeney, president of the Media Council PNG, said local media were under fire recently over coverage of recent police shootings of students at the University of Papua New Guinea.


ICC Women's World Cup

An official release has confirmed PNG's qualifiication for the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifier 2017 after winning the East Asia Pacific Region Qualifier, held recently in Samoa.



Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen triumph in Wimbledon mixed doubles. Heather, the 25-year-old from Guernsey with connections to PNG, has walked away with her first grand slam title in mixed doubles.

InterOil Acquisition

Exxon Mobil Corporation and InterOil Corporation have announced an agreed transaction worth more than $2.5 billion, under which ExxonMobil will acquire all of the outstanding shares of InterOil. "This agreement will enable ExxonMobil to create value for the shareholders of both companies and the people of Papua New Guinea," said Rex W. Tillerson, chairman and chief executive officer of Exxon Mobil Corporation.


Residents Claim Eviction 'Illegal'

Families evicted at Kermedec Street in Port Moresby say the eviction is illegal at this point in time, because the eviction is still being challenged in court.


No Confidence Motion

The Government, led by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill, was confident they would be able to defeat the vote of no-confidence in the Prime Minister in Parliament and they managed to get 85 votes out of the 106 members of parliament to say the same. Government numbers now remain solid with less than 10 months to go until national elections.

Kaias Prepared

While the East New Britain (ENB) Kaias preparations for the 2016 Export Rugby Championships have been short and limited, the squad has seemingly bonded well. This year's team sees the inclusion of players from the Defence Rugby Union Club (DRUC), and Pukpuk forwards Rabbie Namaliu Jnr and Sam Tam Jnr.


Suspect Charged With Bribery

A suspect, who attempted to bribe a police officer in Manus, has been arrested and charged with bribery. During the process of Police Investigation the suspect was alleged to have offered K190.00 to the police investigating officer and demanded him to drop of his case and set him free.


Pala Free

The Supreme Court in Port Moresby has quashed all criminal proceedings against Attorney General and Justice Minister, Ano Pala. The court upheld his appeal, and declared that the warrant for his arrest in 2014 was null and void.


UniTech to Resume

The Council of the PNG University of Technology (PNGUOT) unanimously resolved to salvage the 2016 academic year, and established a tentative commencement date of 29 August 2016, pending approval by the Academic Board. The last days of exams would be 9 December 2016.


Centre for Excellence in Financial Inclusion

The Centre for Excellence in Financial Inclusion (CEFI) has officially launched its website. CEFI was established under the Association Incorporation Act and officially launched on the 24th April 2013 by the Honourable Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Mr. Peter O'Neill. CEFI is endorsed by PNG's National Executive Council (NEC), as the industry apex organization for coordinating, advocating and monitoring all financial inclusion activities in PNG.

Ryan Pini Prepares

Veteran PNG swimmer Ryan Pini said he's feeling fresh and was excited to compete in his fourth and final Olympic Games next month. The 34 year-old retired after the London Games in 2012 but returned to the pool for last year's Pacific Games in Port Moresby, where he won seven gold medals.

The Waigani National Court has dismissed all charges against member for Komo-Magarima Francis Potape today after his lawyer Justin Haiara made submissions yesterday that his client had a no case to answer to.

Vital Records Digitized

A volunteer missionary couple from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have spent over two and a half years digitizing records for the government of PNG. Anne and Henry Nom from Hamilton, New Zealand were assigned to serve as records preservation missionaries in the Port Moresby Papua New Guinea Mission.


Direct Medical Consultation

Roberta Morlin is developing an app that will be able to provide direct medical consultation for women in remote PNG. Roberta says she decided to help improve the health of PNG's female population using digital technology. Her concept is an app, called Fe'mahealth [pronounced Fee-mah-health], which will allow women to openly discuss or consult a doctor for medical advice online, instantly, about their wellbeing.


World Soccer Rating

The PNG men's national soccer team has climbed 20 places in the World Soccer Rankings. Ranked 188th in the world since 2012 and slightly dropped to the worst in 2015 to 203rd placing, this year the OFC Nations Cup's performance had given PNG the boost to climb 20 places up to settle at 164th spot in the ranking.


Kesi United Church

The Kesi congregation of Port Moresby has recently opened its new United Church, at a cost of K200,000, with the funding made available through the Moresby South electorate's District Service Improvement Program (DSIP).


Cheshire Homes

The Cheshire Home Disability Centre in Port Moresby has received a helping hand from Hope Youth Corps (HYC) volunteers. The volunteers visited disability centres in the nation's capital, and helped out around the Cheshire Home.



The Barramundis will head to the Sunshine Coast next month and take on three domestic sides -- -- PNG is set to gain some valuable high-level experience via three matches against Australian state teams in August and September.

The Papua New Guinea women's cricket plan to shake up their batting line-up to address concerns at the top of the order -- -- The Lewas beat Samoa on Tuesday to secure top spot at the East Asia Pacific Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Apia.

The leader of a civil society group in PNG says he plans to challenge the legal basis on which a Taskforce to protect national security has been established.


PNG Pleads for Stadium Expansion

The National Stadium in Port Moresby may be less than 12 months old but representatives from the PNG rugby league will lobby the government for an expansion of the stadium to adequately cater for demand ahead of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.


Buna Cowboys Trek Kokoda

Buna Cowboys are the descendants of the famed Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels who skip along the infamous, 96-kilometre Kokoda Track that reshaped Australian and PNG history in World War II.


Open Heart Surgery Delayed

Australia-based medical charity, Open Heart International has been forced to cancel a planned trip to PNG due to a doctors' strike and safety concerns, as political unrest continues in the country.


Open Heart International (OHI) sends a team of volunteers to the capital, Port Moresby, twice a year to assist in cardiac operations and to help local doctors and nurses maintain a cardiac surgery unit.
