Betel Nut Checks

Police will set up road blocks to check whether people are chewing betel nut and will impose fines of up to K500 after the public largely ignored a ban on the addictive habit.

Despite a ban on selling and chewing in public, including hefty on-the-spot fines of close to the monthly wage, most sellers "could [not] care less", according to the Post-Courier newspaper. Some sellers have reportedly been beaten by authorities but have continued to trade.

Mt Hagen Cultural Show

For a unique festival experience, head to Mt Hagen to experience a "sing-sing", a gathering of different tribes who demonstrate their distinct culture, dance and music in a riot of sound and colour. The Mt Hagen Cultural Show is one of the largest sing-sings in PNG, with performances from more than 100 tribes, all dressed in body paint and tribal dress of feathers, leaves, shells and tusks.

2017 General Elections

The PNG General Elections are scheduled for 2017. Many people are disillusioned with the current government so will be out to win a seat in Parliament in 2017. Retired PNG Defence Force Commander, General Jerry Singirok has indicated he will contest this time around.





Sogeri National High School

Sogeri National High School has entered into a sister-school arrangement with the Sendai Ikuei Gakuen High School in Japan. The sister-school arrangement is expected to promote people-to-people exchanges between Japan and PNG.

UniTech to Resume

The University of Technology in Lae says classes will resume on 29th August and continue until 9 December. The academic board said students would be expected on the campus on 24th August for registration, then there would be two weeks spent revising the interrupted semester one, running through to the 11th of September.

East New Britain province has emerged as a leader in downstream processing of the humble coconut. Despite challenges in the local industry, the Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK) is optimistic that more coconut Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) can tap into exports markets, and ultimately raise the reputation of PNG coconut products.

Juffa Backs Evictions

Oro Governor Gary Juffa has supported calls by Provincial Police Commander Lincoln Gerari to remove settlers at Guba settlement formerly known has Bangoho Settlement. Juffa said unemployed vagrants were a problem nationwide and were indicative of laziness and the handout mentality and he would not tolerate this on behalf of his people.

Marum's Term Extended

Incumbent PNG LNG Kumuls coach Michael Marum has been confirmed to guide the national rugby league team into the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. PNG Rugby Football League chairman Sandis Tsaka said his Board ratified the appointment of Marum as PNG LNG Kumuls coach at a recent meeting.

Momase Regional Qualifiers

The draw for the 2016 Momase Regional Qualifiers for the Besta Cup has been released, with over 24 teams in both the men's and women's divisions confirmed to participate. Tournament organisers said the Momase qualifiers are the biggest event on the Besta Cup calendar, and they are confident of the standard of the competition.

Sister Province Relationship

The New Ireland and Milne Bay provinces have forged sister province relations, which is a first for PNG. Sir Julius Chan, Governor of New Ireland, and the Governor for Milne Bay, Titus Philemon, made the announcement at the recent New Ireland Day celebrations.

New Ant Species

Researchers have discovered two new ant species whose members look same as dragons from popular drama series 'Game of Thrones'. What makes these tiny creatures resemble huge dragons? They have large and distinctive spines, but don't have fire-breathing capabilities like dragons, as per the research team.

The two ant species found in the tropical rainforests of PNG and Fiji have been named after the dragons of the TV series. The given names are: Pheidole drogon and Pheidole viserion.

The government in the autonomous region of Bougainville is to press the global mining giant, Rio Tinto, on several fronts after it divested itself of its majority shareholding in Bougainville Copper Ltd.

Hunters Survive Scare

The PNG Hunters still remain unbeaten at home after defeating the defending premiers Ipswich Jets in an entertaining and tight affair in Port Moresby recently. In the end, a penalty goal from Hunters playmaker Ase Boas in the 77th minute proved to be the difference.

Governor Wobiro Seeks Bail

Jailed Western Province Governor Ati Wobiro submitted in his bail application at the National Court today that he had a serious heart condition and it was stressful to be locked up at the Bomana prison facility.

High Performance Sports Centre

The PNG Sports Foundation and the High Performance Centre of Excellence (HPCE) have recently established an agreement to move the high performance sport to Lae, Morobe province. The Momase region will be the second region in the country to see a centre established, since the establishment of the HPCE in Port Moresby covering the Southern region. This event was cemented after negotiations took place between the PNG Sports Foundation and the PNG High Performance Centre of Excellence.

Progress on the new Star Mountain Plaza in Port Moresby has been positive according to reports by Mineral Resources Development Company. The project is about 15 per cent into the overall budget comparing this expenditure to the actual progress overall much to expectation.
