Will 2017 Bring Change

Papua New Guineans in settlements and rural communities where there is little or no government services cry their heart out every time they welcome the New Year. They have a lot of expectations for the New Year. It gives them hope on changes that may occur to their lives.

POM Police Chief Attacked

The National Capital District's Metropolitan Superintendent, Commander Ben Turi and his men, have been attacked by PNG Defence Force (PNGDF) soldiers. Mr. Turi told NBC News after the attack that he and his men were assaulted by a group of soldiers who came in two vehicles and fired shots into the air and chased everyone near the Boroko Police Station.

The PNGDF Chief of Staff Colonel Raymond Numa said that the incident is now being investigated.

Vale Oseah Philemon

Veteran journalist, Oseah Philemon has passed away. Mr. Philemon died of a heart failure on Christmas Eve. Philemon, whose best known by colleagues as "O-P" was a former broadcast journalist before joining the print media and made his way up to be the Chief Editor of the Post-Courier.

Lae New Year

About 350 police stationed all around the city ensured that Lae City welcome the New Year on a peaceful note. Two babies were born at the ANGAU General Hospital compared to the 18 born at the start of 2016.

AWT International Sold

SUBSEA engineer NauticAWT's 60.75 per cent-owned Malaysian unit has sold off a loss-making PNG subsidiary for RM1 (S$0.32), the group said in a recent Singapore Exchange filing.

Wafi-Golpu Mine

The Wafi-Golpu project could be 'multi-generational' according to Bryan Bailie, Executive Project Director of the Wafi-Golpu Joint Venture. He recently told the Papua New Guinea Mining and Petroleum Investment Conference in Sydney that the intention is to roll out the project in stages.

Fishing Vessels Detained

Two foreign fishing vessels have been detained by authorities in Papua New Guinea for fishing illegally in Milne Bay province. The Post Courier reports that the PNG Defence Force captured the vessels and their 56 crew and brought them into Alotau on Christmas Eve.

Iranian Refugees Attacked

Two Iranian refugees have allegedly been attacked by officials on Manus Island. It is alleged the pair were attacked after trying to join in a New Year's Eve party. It's alleged they were told they had no right to be outside the controversial detention centre, before being assaulting by police officers. The two men are reportedly currently being held in custody without charge.

Tourism Negatively Impacted

A prominent Madang resident and tourist operator has repeated calls for community action on crime, and for government to encourage tourists to go to locations outside of tourism hubs. Owner of the Madang Resort, Sir Peter Barter, points out that tourism numbers have declined by up to 30 percent in over 10 years due to various factors, including crime and airline delays.

National Soccer League

Owner of Hekari football club John Kapi Nato has confirmed the withdrawal of Hekari United FC from the National Soccer League. Meanwhile, Mr. Kapi Nato also announced that a new football association, called the Super League, will be formed soon with the 12 presidents of the member association to join the new association.

Banking in Kavieng

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia operated in Kavieng for seven years from 1916 through to the 31st of December 1923. The Bank of New South Wales (now known as Westpac Bank) operated in Kavieng from 1927 until the Japanese invaded during the Second World War in Jan 1942.

After the war, in 1945, it was some time before the banks returned to Kavieng and New Ireland. First the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and in the 1970s the Bank of NSW where today both Westpac Bank and the Bank of South Pacific are now operating, maintaining services that one way or another stretch back 100 years to 1916.

Prior to 1916 financial services were offered by the larger German companies to their commercial customers.

Language Loss

Clan elders in Butibam village in Lae have highlighted serious concerns about the rapid loss of culture and their language. While small efforts are being made to raise awareness, families are being encouraged to keep their 'Kawac' language alive.

Goroka Sports

Goroka based coffee exporter, Coffee Connections has sponsored touch and volleyball tournaments in villages and hamlets in Goroka as part of the New Year celebrations in the electorate. Managing director Henry Ame said the sponsorship was part of his firm's annual community service obligation to recognise and reward stakeholders such as coffee growers, buyers and workers, who contributed to the firm's prosperity over the years.

Two-Lane Laloki Bridge

Thanks to the Chinese Habour Engineering Company, whose workers are currently putting the final touches, a two-lane bridge at Laloki, outside of Port Moresby along the Hiritano Highway, is nearing completion.

Steve Highlander - Missionary

Steve and Brooke Highlander have been preaching the gospel and meeting practical needs in Papua New Guinea since 2014. Their ministry has included working with survivors of gender-based violence, young men from the settlements and villages and children in crisis, as well as outreach ministry to churches, villages and settlements. They will be spending several months in the USA and returning to PNG in early 2017.

Senior Policeman Arrested

A Senior Mobile Squad unit Commander has been arrested and slapped with three major charges by police in NCD. Sergeant Numbos, is alleged to have used a firearm to assist criminals in the recent 1.2 million Kina robbery at the Jacksons Airport.
