Commonwealth Secretariat Board of Governors

The High Commissioner of Papua New Guinea to the United Kingdom, Her Excellency Ms Winnie Kiap, is the new Chair of the Commonwealth Secretariat Board of Governors. Having been elected unanimously by her fellow Board members, she took up her responsibilities recently.

All 53 Commonwealth member states are represented on the Board of Governors, which meets annually to consider Commonwealth Secretariat work plans and budgets.

Flying Ambulance

There are only two runways in the vast Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, and the Samaritan Aviation planes don't need either of them.

The two Cessna 206 float planes can land on the many waterways of the Sepik floodplain, allowing Samaritan Aviation to provide a free air ambulance service for the people living along PNG's longest river and its many tributaries.

Madang Soccer Centre of Excellence

Little known Madang Soccer Centre of Excellence (MSCoE) congratulates 10 of its players for making the Papua New Guinea Under-17 squad. The centre is open to all clubs and interested individuals (boys and girls between 10 and 16 years) are encouraged to enrolled.

Highlands Highway

Businesses along sections of the Okuk Highway (Highlands Highway) have been impacted by landslips. All business that rely on freight from the coast are feeling the pinch. Residents of Mt. Hagen have had to contend with a severe fuel shortages caused by the landslips in Simbu and the Eastern Highlands. The price of petrol has risen.

International Cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) East Asia-Pacific (EAP) men's team finished with three (3) wins from ten (10) matches at the 2017 Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Champions which concluded on Wednesday 11th January in Wollongong, Australia.

The EAP Men's Team, captained by Vanuatu's National Captain, Andrew Mansale which included eight (8) members of the HEBOU PNG Barramundis and PNG "A" Team, finished the 50 Over Competition in sixth (6th) place with no wins from five (5) matches, while they finished a very respectable second (2nd) place in the T20 Competition with three (3) wins from five (5) matches.

Human Rights

Human Rights Watch says Papua New Guinea has failed to protect women and children. Papua New Guineans took to the streets to protest against government corruption and were met by gunfire, Human Rights Watch has said in a scathing assessment of Australia's nearest neighbour.

Asia Broadcast Satellite

The National Information and Communications Technology Authority has presented three licences to the Asia Broadcast Satellite company, to incorporate its company, ABS Global Satellite Limited so that it can operate in the country. ABS Global Satellite is now licensed to provide data and internet services over facilities and infrastructure for its PNG customers.

National Broadband Transmission Network

Huawei will help Papua New Guinea to build its national broadband transmission network with centres in Vanimo, Wewak, Madang, Lae, Popondetta, Alotau, Kerema, Daru, Kimbe, Kavieng, Kokopo, Lorengau, Arawa and Port Moresby.

3D Project for Searcher

Seabed Mining

Canadian mining company, Nautilus Minerals, has been developing a plan to extract high-grade deposits of copper, gold, zinc and silver on the seabed near the mineral-rich underwater Hydrothermal Vent Systems. In past statements, Nautilus Minerals has expressed confidence that cutting edge technology will allow the company to mine the seabed in an environmentally responsible way. But Professor Steiner, who conducted his own independent study into the proposed mine, says the project warrants extreme caution.

Crocodile Captured In Lae

A young fresh water crocodile has been captured in a drain outside a company premises in Lae. The crocodile was caught by an employee of Jim Tapako Investment at Kamkumung, who trapped it using chicken meat.

The first Eagle Copters 407HP in the region, VH-EPU, has been operating in the hot and high environment of Papua New Guinea with outstanding results. UN Women partners in the transport sector are undertaking innovative strategies to improve safety, mobility and accessibility of public transport for Papua New Guineans, including for women and girls. Hijacking Dismissed

What appeared to be a hijacking attempt aboard an Air Niugini plane to Singapore has been categorically dismissed by the airline. The airline says there was a minor incident where one of the passengers had inflated a life jacket causing a commotion among other passengers.

Townsville Flights

National airline Air Niugini is set to commence bi-weekly flights to Townsville in the Australian state of Queensland from March 2017. The move strengthens Port Moresby's Jacksons International Airport status as a regional aviation hub.

Popondetta Crash

Relatives of 13 people killed in a truck accident in Papua New Guinea's Oro province have brought the town of Popondetta to a standstill. Police said a truck belonging to the Malaysian palm oil company Sime Darby hit a smaller truck carrying 29 passengers as it was travelling into town. Sixteen passengers survived the crash.
