Port Moresby (POM) weather
One reader has asked the following question: -
What's the weather like over there? (PNG)
Well to answer that I can probably truthfully say that the temperature will most likely be about 30 to 32 degrees Celsius during the day and will probably drop to somewhere near 20 degrees during the night. The reason I can say that is because that is the temperature range for Port Moresby for about 350 days of the year. A couple of days a year the temp drops to below 20 but in the whole time the temp has been recorded it has not reached the magical 100 degree Fahrenheit on the other end of the scale in Port Moresby. The records go back for about 100 or so years. Because of the "high" temperatures it is pleasant when it rains.
With the weather being the way it is it is usually forgotten about in conversations. Can you imagine a conversation that doesn't bring up the subject of weather?

Computer Donation
"The University This Week" newsletter had an article on the donation of Computer equipment by DG Computers. The computers will be used to encourage students to enhance their learning capability.
Daily Costs
- The price of a newspaper - The Post Courier available Monday to Friday sells for 70 toea. What is a toea worth? Well 100 toea make up the Kina and the Kina is worth about 40 US cents. Aug 1998
- The weekly newspaper, The Independent, cost 60 toea and is very good value.
- Tesco 420g beans in tomato sauce on special for 75t at Stop and Shop.
- 60g Mars bar K1.75
- The price of a loaf of bread varies from shop to shop but expect to pay approx.
K1.50 per loaf.
- Petrol is approve 82.5 toea per litre. There is no discounting of petrol.
- A box of 10 diskettes will cost around K30.
- A trip on a bus will set you back 50 toea. That cost is a per trip cost so if you hop off one bus and onto another it will double the cost of your trip. The buses can usually seat 25 people and run to no fixed timetable. They do, however, have a set route to follow.
- A 500ml plastic bottle of coke will cost K1.00 at most shops in Moresby although it can be purchased cheaper.
- An overnight stay in hospital will cost you less than K20.00

Australian Aid
The Australian Govt. has reluctantly given PNG an advance
on the budget aid support, totalling AUD$59.2 million.
Port Moresby (POM) Freeway
The Port Moresby "freeway" exits, which have
been closed off with temporary drums, are now being closed off permanently
due to safety reasons.

Sea Kayaks
The chairman for health and community development services
and president for the Pihi Womens Association (Nahau Rooney) has claimed that
the K500,000 relocated from the Manus Provincial Govt. budget to the World
sea kayaking championships has not been spent wisely.
